Govt to enhance Puri seer's security
Bhubaneswar: Odisha govt on Friday decided to enhance security for Puri Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati considering the present situation in the country following the Pahalgam terror attack.

The announcement came after a high-level meeting presided over by chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
In a written statement, the CMO stated, "The chief minister has emphasized to strengthen the security arrangements for the revered Jagadguru Puri Shankaracharya and his Govardhan mutt. Protection of the Shankaracharya, security and preservation of Govardhan mutt and its development were thoroughly discussed in the meeting."
Puri Shankaracharya currently enjoys Z category protection.
A senior police officer present in the meeting, said, "Though there is no immediate threat to the top seer, the chief minister has directed the state level security committee headed by the home secretary to reassess the threat perceptions and upgrade the scale of deployment."
Police sources indicate a decision will soon be taken whether to elevate Shankaracharya's security from Z to Z-Plus category or increase personnel within the existing security framework.

New Delhi: Former Union minister Manish Tewari, who travelled as part of an Operation Sindoor multi-party delegation, has downplayed the Congress party leadership's claim that the US President forced India to 'surrender' during May's four-day military conflict with Pakistan, saying back-channel conversations during such tense events were nothing new. 'It has been going on since 1990 as I documented with the Robert Gates mission when Pakistan started flashing the N (nuclear) word even eight years before its nuclear test in response to some fantasized Indian buildup in the western deserts, to Operation Parakram in 2001, to the Mumbai terror outrage in 2008, to Uri to Pulwama, and to Pahalgam and its aftermath. The only difference is while earlier back channeling was a quiet process, but now you have an incumbent in the White House who believes that back channeling is front channeling,' Tewari said. His remarks assume significance against the backdrop of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 'Narender Surrender' jibes, suggesting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave in to US pressure to call off the military operation against Pakistan on 10 May. Gandhi reiterated his allegation Friday while addressing a rally in Bihar. Tewari, who is also a lawyer, suggested that Trump's claims that his administration played the role of a mediator was likely to be a stretch as that was a completely different format altogether. In contrast, the UN's attempt to resolve the Kashmir dispute in 1948 at the insistence of New Delhi was an attempt at mediation, Tewari said. 'Mediation has a more structured connotation to it, but, fortunately or unfortunately these terms keep getting used alternatively. And therefore it leads to a certain sense of ambiguity. But as I was earlier pointing out that when we took the dispute to the United Nations in 1948, the Jammu and Kashmir question at that point in time in pursuance of the UN resolution, there was the UN group on India and Pakistan on Kashmir. 'There was an attempt at a structured mediation. You see, a mediation or an arbitration or an alternative dispute resolution is when two parties agree to the terms of reference of a dispute, which then they allow an arbitrator or a mediator to try and adjudicate,' said Tewari. Asked about the Congress's official position, Tewari said it could be the reflection of a 'bitterly contested political space' where 'nobody is prepared to give any quarter' to the other side. 'In fact, even when the delegation was traveling, the kind of rhetoric which was being articulated by certain sections of the NDA/BJP establishment, was also something which was completely avoidable. But that unfortunately is the nature of our politics, whether you like it or not,' said Tewari, serving his third term as a Lok Sabha MP. However, Tewari added, there needs to be consensus on the fact that Pakistan has been a chronic sponsor of low-intensity conflict which needs to be exposed in the court of global opinion, 'as against whatever may be your internal dynamics or the questions that you may have surrounding the events of 7th 8th of May, the night of 7th, 8th of May till the 10th of May.' 'I, for one, understand and appreciate that distinction, and that's why we were completely focused on exposing Pakistan and trying to tell our interlocutors that this is not only a threat to the stability of South Asia, this is a threat to the stability of the world, given the very nature and the the chronic disposition of that state to use violence as a means of trying to achieve its senses,' he said. Responding to a question on the Congress leadership being upset over the Centre picking leaders like him, Shashi Tharoor, Salman Khurshid for the delegations instead of the names suggested by Gandhi and party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Tewari said such things do not bother him. 'Honestly, we have been in this contested, politically acerbic, bitter space for 25 years. And there is a larger national interest, which is at play, and that larger national interest is proscribing Pakistan, which uses terror as an instrument of state policy. And to me, that was the objective. And the rest of it, for someone who has been a card-carrying member of this noise for the last two-and-a-half decades, it's really no skin off my back,' he said. US Lawmaker Tells Pak Delegation To Eliminate "Vile" Terror Group Jaish-e-Mohammad
Washington: A senior American lawmaker has told a visiting Pakistani delegation, led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, that the country should do "all it can" to eliminate the "vile" terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed as well as ensure protection of religious minorities. The Pakistani delegation met Congressman Brad Sherman here on Thursday, timing their visit to the US capital around the same time as a multi-party delegation of Indian parliamentarians led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is in Washington, DC. The all-party delegation is briefing key interlocutors about Operation Sindoor in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack and India's strong resolve to fight terrorism emanating from Pakistan. In a post on X, Mr Sherman said that he "emphasised to the Pakistani delegation the importance of combatting terrorism, and in particular, the group Jaish-e-Mohammed, who murdered my constituent Daniel Pearl in 2002". Terrorist Omar Saeed Sheikh was convicted of orchestrating the 2002 kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Mr Sherman said Pearl's family continues to live in his district and "Pakistan should do all it can to eliminate this vile group and combat terrorism in the region". Bhutto also landed in the US at the same time as the Tharoor-led delegation. Bhutto met UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres with his delegation as well as Security Council Ambassadors in New York and later travelled to Washington in Pakistan's bid to internationalise the conflict with India as well as the Kashmir issue but instead got instructed to deal with terrorism emanating from its soil. The US lawmaker also told the Pakistani delegation that the protection of religious minorities in Pakistan remains an important issue. "Christians, Hindus and Ahmadiyya Muslims living in Pakistan must be allowed to practice their faith and participate in the democratic system without fear of violence, persecution, discrimination, or an unequal justice system." Sherman further urged the Pakistani delegation to relay to their government the need to free Dr Shakil Afridi, who continues to languish in prison for helping the United States kill Osama bin Laden. "Freeing Dr Afridi represents an important step in bringing closure for victims of 9/11," he said. Afridi is a Pakistani physician who helped the CIA run a polio vaccination programme in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to collect DNA samples of bin Laden's family. Afridi was arrested by Pakistani authorities shortly after the American raid on bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad in May 2011. In 2012, a Pakistani court sentenced Afridi to 33 years in prison.

Fear grips Punjab border districts after Operation Sindoor placed on hold
Amritsar: A month after India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the April 22 Pahalgam massacre, fear still hangs heavy over Punjab's border villages, even though the govt claims the military action is now "on hold". Residents in the districts adjoining the Pakistan border report a lingering anxiety — rooted not just in the conflict itself but in its unresolved status. In villages near Attari and Tarn Taran, life remains suspended in caution. The spectre of Pakistani drones, which violated Indian airspace previously, continues to haunt daily routines. "Even though life is returning to normal slowly, there are still nights we can't sleep," said Dharmander Singh, a farmer near Attari. "Every unfamiliar sound makes me think a drone is approaching." That fear deepens at dusk, prompting many to stay indoors. "We used to hear of ceasefires in Jammu and Kashmir. Now it's our villages on edge," said Manjinder Singh of Naushehra Dhalla. While officials say the cross-border operation has been paused, locals say ambiguity has only heightened their sense of insecurity. "The govt says it's on hold. But what does that really mean for us?" asked Shivani Gupta of Amritsar. The Border Security Force (BSF) has permitted farmers to return to their fields beyond the border fence, with Kisan Guards accompanying them for protection. Yet many remain reluctant. "I have land to till, but every step feels like a risk," said Manjinder Singh. "Who will protect us if something happens?" Economic and diplomatic activity remains sluggish. The Kartarpur Corridor remains closed, trade with Afghanistan has yet to resume, and while Pakistan allowed a stranded Afghan truck to deliver goods into India recently, regular passenger traffic is still suspended. For Punjab's border residents, uncertainty — not gunfire — remains the most unsettling part of the aftermath.
