Yankees Given Trade 'Priority' as Infielder Faces Cut

The New York Yankees were handed a series loss by the rival Boston Red Sox on Sunday, though there's no need to hit the panic button.
Even after dropping two games to the Red Sox, the Yankees hold a strong lead in the American League East division and are anticipating a significant roster boost when Giancarlo Stanton returns from injury in the near future. After emerging as one of the best teams in baseball this season, the Yankees will be looking for some peripheral improvements at the trade deadline with high hopes of returning to the World Series.
But with that deadline approaching in just a few weeks, a clear priority has emerged for the Yankees as infielder Pablo Reyes struggled against the Red Sox and seems in danger of losing his spot on the team.
"Reyes had just 28 plate appearances entering Saturday's game and has graded out negatively offensively and defensively in a small sample," Chris Kirschner reported for The Athletic. "Giancarlo Stanton should return in the coming weeks, and Reyes is a candidate to get designated for assignment if a roster spot is needed. ... Getting a better infielder before next month's trade deadline should be a priority for the Yankees."

The Yankees' need for an infield upgrade has been clear since this past winter, but Kirschner noted some issues in the Red Sox series have made it even more apparent. Reyes made a significant mistake in Saturday's game, as he missed a tag at third while standing "two steps in front of the bag and not on the base."
"Reyes was a nice spring training story, but the Yankees were fooled by meaningless February and March stats," Kirschner added. "There's not much reason for Reyes to be one of the Yankees' 26 players."
If Reyes is moved to make room for Stanton, that would leave Oswald Peraza as the team's only backup infielder. As a result, some kind of infield addition would become all but required before the trade deadline passes.
