Fans, players, and sponsors are preparing to descend on Indianapolis for the 21st WNBA All-Star weekend. The main event will take place July 19 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and will feature 22 of the league's brightest stars led by opposing team captains, Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier.
The league has witnessed explosive growth since 1999, when it hosted its first All-Star exhibition in New York.
For example, A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces was the only player to garner more than 90,000 fan votes in 2023. Conversely, the top three fan favorites for this year's matchup—Clark, Collier, and Aliyah Boston—each received more than 1 million votes.
In addition to increased fan engagement, the league has also landed new partnerships with a diverse slate of brands, including Coach and Ally Financial. Both companies signed multiyear deals in 2025.
With Black women making up more than 60 percent of WNBA players, including some of the league's most beloved, All-Star weekend has become a platform for the culture.
Here are three markers that demonstrate how Black founders and creatives are contributing to the league's growth at this year's All-Star experience.
Black-founded Brands In The Spotlight
While All-Star weekend boasts major sponsors such as AT&T, State Farm, and Kia, this year's festivities will shine a light on Black-founded brands as well, such as the sports apparel brand, Playa Society.
Fans will get a peek into founder Esther Wallace's design process and have a chance to snag new merchandise. Wallace, a former pro baller, founded the brand in 2018 with the trademarked 'Female Athlete T-Shirt.' The shirt displays the words 'female athlete' with a line striking through 'female' to counter the notion that women's sports are inferior.
Mielle Organics, a haircare brand established by Monique Rodriguez, will also return to WNBA Live for the third time with an activation that highlights the intersection of beauty, sports, and culture. The company became the league's Official Textured Haircare Partner in 2023, the same year it signed Angel Reese as a brand ambassador.
In addition to its brand activation, Mielle will also launch a new initiative, the HBCU Event Intern Program. A press release described the project as 'a one-of-a-kind event internship experience that provides career development opportunities in the business of basketball for a select group of HBCU students.'
The student interns will include two players from the Lady Pirates, the Hampton University women's basketball team. Mielle established a partnership with the HBCU team in 2024 through a $200,000 gift and a separate endowed scholarship fund for student athletes.
The program is a collaboration between Mielle and the WNBA and makes history as the league's first project focused on students at historically Black colleges and universities.
Sydney Colson's Stand-up Comedy Debut

Fans will have the opportunity to witness Indiana Fever guard Sydney Colson's stand-up comedy debut at Fever Fest. The six-hour watch party will take place July 19 and will feature multiple headliners including Deon Cole, Cedric the Entertainer, and Leslie Jones.
It's not uncommon for professional athletes to leverage their popularity on the court or field to launch careers in media and entertainment. From film and television, to the ubiquitous sports podcast, fans can interact with their favorite players now more than ever. Still, few pros (and former pros) have the talent to build a legitimate fanbase beyond their sport. Colson appears to be among the few.
Fever Fest offers the two-time WNBA champion a chance to translate the wit she typically shares with her hundreds of thousands of social media followers into a traditional comedy performance. If Colson can effectively repackage the humor that drives her digital content, she may be setting herself up for a new level of visibility off the court.
Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration Collaboration
As the host team, representatives from the Fever have worked to amplify Indiana Black Expo's annual summer festivities, which will overlap with All-Star weekend. Founded in 1970, the IBE aims to support social and economic development among African American youth and families.
Pacers Sports and Entertainment CEO Mel Raines has been working with Alice Watson, president and CEO of IBE, for several months to coordinate schedules in the hopes of encouraging visitors to engage All-Star events as well as IBE's programming. In fact, Pacers Sports and Entertainment is one of the sponsors for IBE's Summer Celebration.
In an interview for WRTV Indianapolis, Raines expressed high hopes for the collaboration.
'We wanted to make sure this would be something that both events are better because of,' she said, "and I think we're accomplishing that.'

Fever Star Caitlin Clark's Projected Return Date Revealed by ESPN
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Indiana Fever have suffered through a rough start to the 2025 WNBA season compared to what had been expected from them. Caitlin Clark has suffered the same fate thanks to multiple different injury issues. Even now, Clark remains out due to injuring her groin once again just before the All-Star break. She has only played in 13 games this season of the 25 the Fever have played as a team. As of right now, the team has not given any timetable for a potential return to the court form Clark. Read more: Fever's Caitlin Clark Breaks Another Record Without Playing a Minute "The team can confirm that no additional injuries or damage were discovered through the evaluations," the statement read. "Clark will continue working with the Fever medical team on her recovery and rehabilitation, with the priority on her long-term health and well-being. There is no timetable available for Clark's return, and no additional details will be provided at this time. Any further updates will be shared as they become available." Despite there being no official timeline for Clark to return to the court, ESPN has revealed when it believes she'll be back and playing for the Fever again. On their WNBA injuries page, ESPN has listed August 12 as a potential return date for Clark. If that does end up becoming accurate, Clark would make her return against Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings at home. Throughout the 13 games she has been able to play this season, Clark has seen her numbers decrease. That should be expected though, as she has been playing through nagging injury issues. Read more: Sky Coach Sends Message as Angel Reese Faces Threat of Suspension In the 13 games she has played, Clark has averaged 16.5 points per game to go along with 8.8 assists, five rebounds, and 1.6 steals. She has also shot 36.7 percent from the floor and has connected on 27.9 percent of her three-point attempts. Obviously, it hasn't been the MVP-caliber season that many fans and analysts were expecting from Clark. The hope is simply that she can get healthy and back on the court to help Indiana pursue a run in the playoffs. Expect to hear more about the Fever superstar in the near future. For now, ESPN's projected return date gives Indiana fans hope. Make sure to follow Newsweek Sports for all Indiana Fever and WNBA news and updates.

Is Caitlin Clark playing today? Indiana Fever vs Chicago Sky
Caitlin Clark has been sidelined with a right groin injury since the final minute of the Indiana Fever's 85-77 July 15 win over Connecticut from TD Garden in Boston. Unfortunately, Fever fans won't be seeing Clark on Sunday afternoon against the Chicago Sky (7-17). The Indy Star's Brian Haenchen reported on Saturday evening that Clark had officially been ruled out against Chicago. Including the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final, it's now the 14th game that Clark will have missed due to injury this season. On Thursday, the Indiana Fever released a statement on Clark's injury status and her progression. "Caitlin Clark underwent further medical evaluations earlier this week, which confirmed that no additional injuries or damage were discovered. "Clark will continue working with the medical team on her recovery and rehabilitation, with the priority on her long-term health and well-being. There is no timetable available for her return," the Fever's statement read. Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game on 36.7% field goal shooting and 27.9% 3-point accuracy. Fans may not get to see Chicago star forward Angel Reese either. Reese (back) is listed as questionable in the availability report released Saturday night. Chicago (7-17) ruled out Ariel Atkins (leg), Moriah Jefferson (leg) and Courtney Vandersloot (knee) for Sunday game's game with Hailey Van Lith (ankle) and Michaela Onyenwere (knee) also listed questionable. Sunday's Fever-Sky game was moved to the United Center earlier this year to accommodate tickets demand. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CT on ABC. Cowboys sign tight end Jake Ferguson to a 4-year, $52 million extension
OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys signed tight end Jake Ferguson to a four-year, $52 million extension Sunday. The deal includes a $12 million signing bonus. A fourth-round pick in 2022, Ferguson is entering the final year of his rookie deal. He had 59 catches for 494 yards but did not have a touchdown reception last season. The previous year, he posted career highs with 71 catches for 761 yards and five TDs. Ferguson dealt with knee and concussion issues last year but still started 14 games. This deal comes as two-time All-Pro defensive end Micah Parsons remains in negotiations for his own extension, entering the final season of his rookie deal. Parsons said recently he had not seen much progress in those talks. ___
