The world's biggest rip-off destinations and those bucketlist spots perfect for a bargain break have been revealed.
When it comes to holidays, nothing sours the poolside mojito quicker than the feeling that your cash is disappearing too quickly.
Thankfully, the Post Office has looked into where in the world the British pound delivers the most value for money this year. We've put the biggest bargain cities and outrageous rip-offs resorts on an interactive map, so you can book armed with all of the facts.
If you're looking for the most bang for your buck, then head to the Algarve.
The Portugese coastal resort is a huge favourite with Brits, who take advantage of cheap, regular flights from across the UK to flock to the southern region en-masse each summer.
It's basket of holiday goodies cost £58.95, 1.6 per cent less than in 2024. This is due to the rock-bottom cost of meals and drinks. The average cost of a three-course meal for two with wine in Albufeira weighed in at £40.33 – the lowest recorded across the 47 destinations surveyed (figure 9) and one third the cost in New York (£128.27).
The Algarve is one of 19 resorts or cities that got cheaper this year than last, according to Post Office research. Others to do so include Delhi, India; Phuket, Thailand; Spain's Costa del Sol and Prague in the Czech Republic.
If you're keen to stay in Europe, then Prague is a good bet. Far more than just stag-dos and strip clubs, the former Soviet city is enriched by a huge amount of history, art, and music.
The Czech capital's basket of holiday goods cost £75.92 this year, a significant price fall of over 20 per cent compared to 2024.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the biggest deals can be found a little further away from the UK, although bargain-hungry holidaymakers will have to factor in the cost of getting to these destinations when choosing where to go.
Cape Town in South Africa is the second cheapest destination looked at this year, with a basket of essentials costing £59.84. This is a great destination for Southern Hemisphere wine buffs as a glass of grape costs just £2.07; a fifth of the price it'll set you back in New York.
Japan's capital city, Tokyo, has been massively popular with Brits over the past year, thanks to the very favourable exchange rate.
A glass of wine and a bottle of beer can be purchased there for the equivalent of just over a fiver.
One destination to keep an eye on is Delhi. At £69.52, prices in the Indian city have dropped 10.7 per cent. Although alcohol prices there are a little on the steep side, soft drinks, water and food won't lighten your wallet too much.
At the other end of the scale, New York is the most expensive of 47 destinations surveyed, with a barometer total of £167.85 - a rise of 15.6 per cent year-on-year. Not only will you have to spend upwards of £7 for a beer in the Big Apple, you'll be expected to tip generously on top of that.
The eye-watering continues in Hawaii, the second most expensive destination on the list and the home of £9.18 insect repellent, and in Nice, France. Head to the French city, and you'll find yourself being stingy with the suncream, as a bottle costs close to £17.
While the world has been in turmoil since Donald Trump returned to the White House (and perhaps was before), sterling remains strong against many other currencies.
Over three-quarters of Post Office's top 30 currencies – including the euro and most other European currencies – have
weakened since last March. This could provide holidaymakers with a big incentive to choose destinations where sterling will provide more 'bang for their buck.
Appetite for traveling remains high and is growing. Three-in-five (60 per cent) of Brits surveyed about their holiday plans for the coming year told Post Office Travel Money that they will be travelling abroad – up from 51 per cent who were asked the same question a year ago.
Almost three-quarters (73 per cent) of them will holiday in Europe and most (95 per cent) will be making a repeat journey to a European destination.
Although a big majority are planning to get away this year, most share a desire to keep things as cheap and cheerful as possible.
Travelling away from busy periods is regarded as the best way to make travelling abroad more affordable, with two-in-five holidaymakers prepared to swap peak season travel for cheaper times of the year.
More than a quarter of those questioned say they will book cheaper accommodation (27 per cent), take fewer holidays (27 per cent) or go to a destination that costs less (26 per cent).

But if you've already booked, or aren't sure what to do, what are your rights if the weather is poised to wreck your trip? There are lots of definitions of "extreme weather', but leaving aside typhoons and hurricanes, the term can refer to any unusual weather pattern that could be considered to have a significant impact or result in danger. This could include; flooding, high temperatures, wildfires as a consequence of weather events, extreme cold, storms and storm surges. Can I cancel my holiday? As a general rule, if the Foreign Office issues a warning not to travel because of extreme weather and advises against it, you should be able to get a refund for flights and for foreign trips booked through UK-based holiday companies. Currently there are warnings about travel to some of the most popular holiday destinations – but no outright 'don't travel' instructions. If you're concerned, approach your travel insurer, holiday company, hotel or airline. But be willing to compromise. Travel insurance Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Check your travel insurance policy and look for the terms 'extreme' or 'severe' weather. Most policies I've seen don't allow you to cancel due to 'disinclination to travel' – the industry catch-all term for cancelling a holiday. However, if you have a medical condition that could be exacerbated by the heat and your doctor feels it's unsafe to travel, you could be able to claim under the 'curtailment' section of the policy. Holiday companies, hotels and airlines If you've booked a package holiday or booked through an independent travel agency, seek their advice about your rights under the terms of their membership schemes. Even if there are no provisions in the agreements that allow cancellation they may be able to offer you some advice on other options. However, with airlines, hotels and other holiday companies, you're going to have to get creative. Some businesses might allow you to move your holiday or flight forward to a future date, though it's likely that there will be a charge for this. You may be able to request vouchers in lieu of a cash refund, but this may not be for the full amount. You could always see if you could 'sell on' the holiday to someone else. Many businesses will allow you to change the names on the booking, but once again there are fees for doing this. What if you are already on holiday? Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad If disaster strikes when you are on holiday, check the Foreign Office website for guidance and keep in touch with your airline. Your travel insurer will also advise if you are covered for leaving the holiday early – especially if you are in danger or if your health is being adversely affected. If you need medical attention then that's a no-brainer. Get to the hospital but remember to contact the insurer as soon as you can about your claim. In dire circumstances, there will usually be arrangements made in tandem with the Government to get you home. But if you are worried, don't wait passively for a solution. Keep a credit card with at least £1,000 credit on it handy in case you need to book an emergency flight.

Ryanair to make major change to free cabin bag size after huge EU ruling
In a major win for Brits travelling abroad this year, Ryanair has confirmed it's changing its infamous cabin bag allowance following a huge EU ruling - here's everything you need to know Ryanair is making some sizeable adjustments to its free cabin bag allowance, in a huge victory for Brits. The ultra-low-cost airline, known for its sarcastic online presence, has frequently garnered global media attention for issuing out hefty fines for passengers flouting its strict luggage rules. Currently, passengers unwilling to pay for additional luggage must make sure their free 'personal bag' does not exceed 40 X 25 X 20cm - a volume of just 20 litres. It is now common practice for card-machine-waving staff to ask customers to prove their bag fits the tiny dimensions during the boarding process. Those found attempting to bring a larger bag on board can be stung with a £75 charge. However, following a new European Union standard, all of this is about to change. Last month (June 24), members of the European Parliament (MEPs) voted in favour of introducing common dimensions for hand luggage. They agreed that all passengers should have a right to carry on board one personal item, such as a handbag, backpack or laptop with maximum dimensions of 40x30x15 cm without an additional fee. Ryanair has been even more generous than the ruling dictates, confirming it will allow passengers to bring a personal bag up to 40 X 30 X 20cm in the coming weeks. However, its allowance is still stingier than rival easyJet - which permits passengers to bring a free under seat bag of 45 x 36 x 20cm (including wheels and handles). British Airways (BA) technically has a smaller under-seat bag limit - with dimensions restricted to the EU minimum (40 x 30 x 15cm). However, passengers are also allowed to bring a larger cabin bag on board free of charge, as long as it is not heavier than 23kg and can fit in the overhead lockers. "Today's vote marks an important step toward fairer and more transparent travel," vice-chair of the EU Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) Matteo Ricci said in a press statement. "[It introduces] concrete measures such as the clear definition of free hand luggage … a fundamental right to avoid unjustified extra costs." Last month the transport committee of the European parliament voted to give passengers the right to an extra piece of free hand luggage weighing up to 7kg. According to the BBC, the proposed rule would still have to be passed by the wider European parliament before becoming law. Despite the ruling, Brits are still being advised to confirm the baggage rules with their selected airline directly this summer, to avoid any confusion. Showing up with a bag that exceeds the company's allowance may result in a steep fine - or your luggage being taken away and stowed underneath the plane.

3 must-do passport checks ahead of your holiday this year
Google searches for "express passport" have surged by a staggering 323%, revealing just how many people are scrambling to get holiday-ready at the last opportunity. According to a recent Post Office survey 25% of Brits admit they never check the validity of their passport when booking a trip. This oversight can lead to denied boarding, trip cancellations, or being turned away at border control, often at a significant personal cost. To avoid stress or disappointment, last-minute holiday provider Travel Republic has revealed three key checks every traveller should make before heading on a last-minute holiday this summer. More importantly, check it's less than 10 years before your departure date. Those travelling to any country in the EU, or Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland should ensure their passports were issued less than 10 years before their departure dates. For example, if you are flying on July 10 2025, your passport must have been issued after July 10 2015. This rule applies regardless of the passport's expiry date. 🌍 Did you know that some countries require your passport to be valid for several months after your scheduled return date? Check your passport expiry date today! Visit for more information #GetTravelReady Your passport must also be valid for at least three months after your intended return date when travelling to Europe or the Schengen area. For example, if you return home on 1 August 2025, your passport must be valid until at least 1 November 2025. A passport must be in good physical condition to be accepted. Even minor damage, particularly if it means personal details page unreadable, can cause issues at check-in or border control. Gemma Brown, Head of Ground Product & Partnerships at Travel Republic, says: 'The likelihood is that travel insurance providers would not cover any costs associated with invalid or expired passports, as it's down to the traveller to triple-check their documentation is correct. Your passport is your most important travel document - it's worth taking your time to get right! Before submitting your application check: - your photo meets all requirements - all personal details are correct - supporting documents are ready - payment details are accurate 'Our advice would be to ensure that your passport is within the 10-year issue date and is valid for at least six months from the date of departure to ensure you will be accepted into most countries. "Regardless of passport rules, it's important for all travellers to research the country they plan to visit and ensure they know what travel documentation is required upon entering and leaving. You can find foreign travel advice on the government website to make sure you have everything covered.' If your passport doesn't meet the updated rules and outlined conditions, renewing early could be the key to a seamless getaway instead of missing out on your long-awaited trip. Getting a deal on a last-minute holiday is all well and good, but so is making sure your passport is up-to-date. The average cost of a 1-week fast track and 1-day premium passport application is £194.25, and according to data from HM Passport Office, over half a million applications were made in 2023, which would total an £111 million spend.
