Tomás Chancalay's injury is ‘minor,' but still could keep Revolution forward out on Saturday

Boston Globe01-07-2025
New England (6-6-6, 24 points) begins a stretch of five matches in 15 days on Saturday at the Timbers (8-5-6, 30 points), who sit fourth in the Western Conference. Inter Miami makes a midweek visit to Gillette Stadium on July 9.

The injury came in Chancalay's 11th appearance and sixth start in all competitions since he missed 11 months following an ACL tear. He had played the full 90 minutes for the first time this season in last Wednesday's
On a team which has struggled for not just goals, but shots — New England ranks 22nd and 27th in the 30-team league, respectively — Chancalay has been a bright spot. Prone to shooting and scoring in bunches when healthy, he had goals in three of his six starts prior to Saturday.

His injury is one of a slew to hit the Revolution's forward corps this season.
Asked for his thoughts on what feels like an excessive number of losses, Porter pointed to the histories of the players involved.
"Our fitness coach, along with us, we collaborate to plan the training loads, and we have nailed the loads. In fact, we have been under on the loads more than over,' he said. 'A lot of it is previous injury history, when you look at the majority of the guys who have had injuries in the past, which usually means that sometimes, when you are playing a lot of games, you get injuries in the future and the present.
'Leo [Campana] has had some injuries in the past. Hopefully, we can get him healthy the rest of the year. Tomás as well. We're always reflecting and looking at it.'
Saturday's draw, the first in a match the Revolution trailed by at least three goals, still capped a winless homestand (0-2-1). It left New England 11th in the Eastern Conference, four points out of the playoff places, at the start of a six-match July.
Three of the first four of those are on the road, with the lone Foxborough match in the next two weeks Miami's visit.

'We've shown that in [May], we had a long run of games away from home and we were able to pick up significant points,' said midfielder Matt Polster, back healthy again after an illness kept him out of the Nashville match. 'We'll have to do the same again, but we need to find a way to also be much better at home.'

5 standouts from Day 1 of Patriots' joint practices with Vikings

There was no doubt that the New England Patriots would face their toughest test of the preseason when traveling to Eagan for joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings. And that difficulty lived up to the hype on Wednesday. Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, a former longtime Patriots coach, brought the heat at practice, challenging the two rookie offensive linemen, Will Campbell and Jared Wilson, and putting constant pressure on quarterback Drake Maye. It was a physical practice that forced the Patriots to step up their game, which is exactly what the coaches want in this kind of setting. On the defensive side of the ball, the Patriots got some big wins along the defensive front, forcing multiple sacks and an interception in 11-on-11s. Here are the 5 standout Patriots players from Day 1 of the joint practice with the Vikings: QB Drake Maye The offensive line struggles could have turned this into an ugly practice for Drake Maye, but the Patriots' second-year quarterback handled himself well against an aggressive Vikings' defensive front. He completed two long touchdown passes to veteran wideout Mack Hollins and rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson. When the offensive line stood its ground, Maye was cooking under center. RB TreVeyon Henderson With Rhamondre Stevenson sidelined with an injury, the Patriots continued to make TreVeyon Henderson the focal point. The rookie running back had the play of the day with a 70-yard touchdown reception on a wheel route. He hauled in a pass from Drake Maye and sped down the sideline past defenders for six points. WR Mack Hollins Mack Hollins hauled in a long touchdown pass on what looked like a blown coverage by the Vikings' defense. It was a head-up play by the veteran wideout that resulted in six points for the Patriots. Hollins is a savvy player capable of making big plays at any given moment. He fits well in a Patriots offense that isn't afraid to push the ball downfield. CB Marcus Jones The lone interception by the Vikings came on a pass attempt from second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy. It looked like an overthrown pass intended for Vikings wideout Jalen Nailor. Patriots corner Marcus Jones succeeded in making the diving grab and then running the ball in the other direction for a large chunk of yards. WR Kayshon Boutte Patriots wideout Kayshon Boutte had a couple of nice catches in the competitive team periods. On one play, Boutte laid out for a beautiful sideline pass while keeping his toes in bounds. Drake Maye also dropped a dime over a defender to Boutte while being pressured by multiple defenders. Boutte has a real chance to have a breakout year for the Patriots. Like last season, he has been one of their most consistent offensive playmakers. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook. Could the Boston Celtics emerge as a contender in the 2025-26 NBA season?

Throughout the summer, the narrative surrounding the Boston Celtics is that they're in a re-tooling phase and are unlikely to be competitive next season. Sure, they have Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser in the rotation. Yet, the lack of depth available to Joe Mazzulla is expected to be a significant hindrance to the roster and will likely result in some tough stretches of games. Re-tooling phases aren't supposed to be easy. The hope is that they're short-lived, allowing a franchise to bounce back quickly and return to contention in a year or two. And with a talent like Jayson Tatum on the roster, it's difficult to envision the Celtics being out of the championship race for more than a year. However, it would appear that Pritchard and Co. aren't waiting for Tatum's return to make their mark. Instead, they're aiming to compete for a championship in the upcoming season, regardless of the talent currently in the rotation. Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance recently discussed Pritchard's mindset during a recent episode of the "How 'Bout Them Celtics?" podcast. The duo shared their thoughts on the Celtics' ability to compete at the highest level, and whether the current rotation is good enough to hang with the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference. Pacers' NBA Cup game against Cavs to be televised on Amazon Prime

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Pacers will have one of their NBA Cup group play games nationally televised on Amazon Prime in the first year the streaming service will broadcast NBA games. The NBA has been releasing its 2025-26 schedule in parts this week, and on Wednesday they announced the full NBA Cup schedule. The Pacers will play the Cavaliers in Cleveland on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. on Amazon Prime in a rematch of the teams' Eastern Conference semifinals series. The Cavs finished 64-18 last season to earn the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs and post the second-best record in their history, but the Pacers stunned them in five games in the semifinals en route to their first NBA Finals appearance since 2000 and just their second in franchise history. The Cavs are considered early-line Eastern Conference favorites for next season. The Pacers likely would be had All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton torn his right Achilles tendon in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. He will miss all of next season. Re-live the Pacers unbelievable run to the 2025 NBA Finals with IndyStar's commemorative book In their other NBA Cup games, the Pacers will host the Hawks at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31 and the Wizards on Friday Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m. They will play the Raptors in Toronto at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26. The Hawks finished 40-42 last season in eighth place in the Eastern Conference. They lost to the No. 7 seed Magic and then the No. 10 seed Heat in the play-in round and failed to make the playoffs. However, they added center Kristaps Porzingis, ace defensive wing Nickeil Alexander-Walker and sharpshooter Luke Kennard in a busy offseason. They also bring back forward Jalen Johnson, who was averaging 18.9 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game in his first 36 games of 2024-25 before a season-ending shoulder injury. The Raptors finished 11th in the East at 30-52, but they'll add now-healthy forward Brandon Ingram and rookie Collin Murray-Boyles to their wing heavy lineup. The Wizards finished last in the East at 18-64. They traded away leading scorer Jordan Poole but acquired veteran guard C.J. McCollum and wings Malakhi Branham and Cam Whitmore through trades. They also drafted guard Tre Johnson with the No. 6 pick out of Texas. The Pacers reached the finals of what was then called the In-Season Tournament in 2023, losing to the Lakers. Their surprise run in that event helped accelerate their trajectory toward the Eastern Conference Finals in the 2023-24 season after they failed to make the playoffs in 2022-23. In 2024, the Pacers were winless in NBA Cup games and started the season 10-15, but went 40-17 the rest of the season to earn the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference en route to a conference championship and the Finals.
