Mikel Arteta shares plans for Kai Havertz after Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres transfer
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz can play in the same team after both players scored in their 3-0 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao.
Arteta started new £64m striker Gyokeres up front and the Swedish international grabbed his first goal for the Gunners, getting up superbly to glance a header into the far corner.
Havertz started the game on the bench but came on in the 71st minute before giving Arsenal their third and final goal as he slotted home under pressure after being put through on goal by Bukayo Saka.
There will now be questions on how Havertz configures into the team following Gyokeres' arrival - and whether the German could now be sidelined or reduced to a bench option this season.
But after the game Arteta was insistent that the two players could complement each other and pointed out that Havertz was a versatile player capable of playing in midfield too.
"They can play together or Kai can play in different positions," the Spaniard said after the game. "It elevates the quality in the squad, the options we have in the team and the options to provide opposition with a lot of problems.
Arteta went on to say that having multiple attacking options was a positive dilemma to have after going through last season without a recognised No 9. He said: "It's great to see them both scoring and both of them in such good form. It's a good problem to have."
Havertz is hoping to kick on this season after his 2024-25 campaign was ended prematurely through injury. He knows there will be a fight for competition after Arsenal spent heavily on new arrivals, including £55m on Martin Zubimendi and a similar fee on Noni Madueke.
Gyokeres is being backed to help Arsenal deliver a trophy this season after stunning individual campaign saw him score 54 times in 52 games for Sporting Lisbon.
Arsenal were beaten 3-2 by Villarreal in their last pre-season game but Arteta said he was pleased with the team's response in this game - as he praised both Gyokeres and Havertz for their efforts and said it will help the entire team that everyone is "raising the level".
"I am very happy with what I see," he said. "I think, individually, there was some big performances against a Champions League opponent. It's a good feeling.
"That first goal is always very important and the way he (Gyokeres) took it as well, was really, really good. We are developing certain connections with the new players. It was very good. Kai came in and I think the goal he scored was top, as well.
"Raising the level of everybody is going to really help us, because at that level, we are going to need our very best from everybody."

Why Liverpool's Community Shield defeat could be bad omen for Arsenal and Premier League title rivals

The Reds are looking to defend their Premier League crown this season, but started the campaign with a penalty shootout defeat to Crystal Palace at Wembley. That's because winning the curtain-raiser has been a bad omen for teams eyeing the title. Only once since 2011/12 has a team that won the Community Shield gone on to win the Prem in the following season. Out of those 14 completed seasons up to now, the only team to buck the trend was Pep Guardiola's Man City in 2018/19, which followed victory in the Shield via a penalty shootout against Liverpool. And while it is a nice trophy to add to the cabinet - even if arguments over whether it is a major trophy rumble on - it is typically not a good luck charm. The last time the curse of the Shield was lifted was when Sir Alex Ferguson's United beat Chelsea in 2010 before winning the 2010/11 season. Carlo Ancelotti's Blues had done the league and Shield double at the expense of the Red Devils in the 2009/10 season. Arsenal, tipped as the closest challengers to the title once again, have been hunting their first elusive title since their treble-winning side of 2003/04. They have finished second in each of the last three league seasons under Arteta, twice finishing behind Man City before seeing Liverpool take the crown last year. The Gunners have splashed £208million on new signings this summer, including a new talisman in Viktor Gyokeres and midfield general Martin Zubimendi, as well as some pricey squad improvements. Liverpool, City and Chelsea have all spent big as well this summer, but the Emirates faithful will be hoping their settled squad – and hopefully a lack of Community Shield omens – will finally guide them to a 14th English title. Rebel's Romance and Loughnane rock in Germany
A firm favourite of trainer Charlie Appleby, the seven-year-old began his Group One haul in this very race back in 2022 and three years on he was back in the German capital to strike for the eighth time at the highest level. Keen to keep things simple Rebel's Romance was up with the pace throughout the early stages, keeping close tabs on Andre Fabre's Junko and when straightening for home he showed his class to bravely hold off the French challenger. It was in fact a fourth Group One success on German soil for the well-travelled dual Breeders' Cup Turf hero who could return to Del Mar for another crack at the season-ending showpiece, with Coral making him the 5-1 co second-favourite for a third Stateside victory. Appleby said: 'It's great for Billy, but more importantly great for the horse who keeps sparkling on all continents. 'To have him carry on at the top level is fantastic for Sheikh Mohammed and I see this as a pre-cursor for the Canadian International at Woodbine and then the Breeders' Cup.' Loughnane has ridden eight winners from 12 rides for Appleby this season and it is fitting his first success at the top table comes in Germany, having notched his first Group-race triumph at Cologne in April last year. It caps a memorable weekend for his teenage pilot who also won the Sweet Solera Stakes in the royal blue of Appleby and Godolphin aboard Dance To The Music at Newmarket on Saturday. Loughnane told Wettstar: 'This is a feeling I can't describe, it's a feeling of ecstasy, what a horse and I'm very lucky to be riding in these colours and riding a horse like this. 'He's a star of a horse and has been going for a good few seasons now. Big thanks go to William Buick and I spoke to him last night and he told me exactly what to do. He's a superstar.' Meanwhile, the 19-year-old's father Mark Loughnane was the proudest man on Wolverhampton racecourse having watched his son's finest hour from Dunstall Park. He told Sky Sports Racing: 'Words can't describe something like that and it is something Billy has dreamt about all his life, it was amazing. 'I had an even-money favourite in the first but I was more on my phone watching Billy and we can't thank Mr Appleby and George Boughey and people like that enough. His agent Tony Hind has done a super job and they've all really catapulted Billy to the next level but as a dad, I'm proud as punch. 'When it was talked about he might be riding Rebel's Romance he rang me straight away and was like a child in a sweet shop and he said 'I'm on this horse of Mr Appleby's and it's going to be great'. I told him just to relax as a lot can happen between races. 'I've spoken to him on the phone and he's absolutely elated. I was the first one on the phone and he's bouncing and for a young fellow, he's a super young man. What he's done in a short space of time, I've helped him get started, and now that's it off he goes. 'It's awesome for our house and as a family, his mum is here racing today and we're all absolutely cock-a-hoop for him.'

Nobel Mendy to Rangers transfer fee revealed as Real Betis defender set to be Ibrox arrival No.10
Sources close to the defender have confirmed to Record Sport his heart is set on a move to Scotland Rangers are set to clinch a €4million euro deal for Nobel Mendy after the Real Betis defender opted for a move to Scotland. The 20-year-old Frenchman has being weighing up a rival offer from La Liga rivals Rayo Vallecano. But sources close the 6ft 2ins stopper have confirmed to Record Sport that he has now set his heart on joining Russell Martin's side. The arrival of a 10th new face this summer will be a welcome morale booster for the Ibrox boss after his troubled start to life in the Govan hot seat. Martin's side have slumped four points off the title pace already with just two games of the new Premiership season played. The new gaffer and his Light Blues squad will fly out to Plzen on Monday for the second leg of their Champions League third round qualifier looking to finish off the job after last week's 3-0 first leg win. And they will hope to have left-sided centre half Mendy available for the play-off against either Club Brugge or Red Bull Salzburg. The Betis kid has only registered a handful of appearances for the Seville-based outfit in La Liga but did feature in their Europa Conference League semi-final win over Fiorentina.
