Semi nearly crashes off I-80 cliff near California-Nevada state line
The crash happened just before 4:30 a.m. off of eastbound Interstate 80 near the California-Nevada state line.
Exactly what led up to the semi crashing is unclear, but it ended up on its side down a steep embankment.
It's also unclear if there were any injuries in the crash.
California Highway Patrol said one lane of eastbound I-80 is closed as crews work to recover the semi. It's unclear how long the recovery effort will take.

Hacker Says He Discovered a Way to Remotely Unlock, Fire Up One Carmaker's Vehicles
A new vulnerability that could have exposed customer vehicles to control certain vehicle functions, track vehicles and view the personal and financial data of said vehicles' owners was just detailed by a security researcher at the DEF CON hacking conference in Las Vegas. This story, initially reported by TechCrunch, summarized the research done by Eaton Zveare, a researcher at software company Harness. What car company does this specifically affect? Zveare didn't reveal the automaker, only saying that it's a widely-known car maker with popular sub-brands. Theoretically, that means a lot of vehicles would have been vulnerable to this attack had it come from a malicious actor. Thankfully, Zveare reported the vulnerability, and has since heard from the company that it's been addressed. But how was this possible in the first place? Zveare says he found his access point in the automaker's online dealership portal. Security flaws in the portal's login system allowed him to bypass the login entirely and create a 'national admin' account that effectively gave him administrator access. With this access, Zveare was able to use the portal's user look-up tool to pair any vehicle with a mobile app account. Many vehicle apps these days allow you to remotely unlock or lock a car, remotely start it, look up its location, and more; all Zveare needed was a person's first and last name to find a potential target, then it was open season. And even if he didn't know a name off-hand, knowing the VIN was perfectly effective at looking up names in the portal. He tested his theory using a friend's car, transferring ownership of the app's account to himself, allowing him all the privileges his friend had previously via his app. Zveare said he did not test whether he could drive the vehicle away, but the access granted could've put personal belongings and data in the hands of bad actors. As we said, this vulnerability is no longer present within the automaker's dealer portal, and said automaker confirmed to Zveare that it hasn't detected any suspicious access to its portal outside of Zveare's own hacking. That should mean that customers are safe today, but it's just another reminder of the potential pitfalls present with today's connected cars. Pony AI Nears Full-Year Robotaxi Target Despite Scaling Hurdles
Pony AI Inc. said it was confident it would meet its 2025 robotaxi vehicle output target, while acknowledging it will still take time to commercialize the industry. Over 200 of the company's Gen-7 Robotaxi vehicles have been rolled out since mass production started two months ago, putting the firm on track to hit its 1,000 vehicle goal by year-end, Chief Executive Officer James Peng said.

Sam Altman, OpenAI will reportedly back a startup that takes on Musk's Neuralink
Sam Altman is in the process of co-founding a new brain-to-computer interface startup called Merge Labs, and raising funds for it with the capital expected to largely come from OpenAI's ventures team, unnamed sources told the Financial Times. The startup is expected to be valued at $850 million. Merge Labs is also reportedly working with Alex Blania, who runs Tools for Humanity (formerly World) — Altman's eye-scanning digital ID project that 'allows anyone to verify their humanness,' as the company describes. Merge Labs will compete with Elon Musk's Neuralink, which is developing computer interface chips designed to be implanted in the brain. Musk founded Neuralink in 2016 (although its existence wasn't known until 2017) and the company has made serious progress. Neuralink is currently in trials with people who suffer from severe paralysis. It aims to allow them to control devices with their thoughts. It raised a $600 million Series E at a $9 billion valuation in June. Neuralink (and perhaps, Merge Labs) could revolutionize how humans interact with technology. Some might even say their tech could take humanity towards 'the singularity.' Long before Silicon Valley became obsessed with the concept of artificial general intelligence (AGI), it was enamored with 'the singularity.' Musk has used the term to describe a time when AI surpasses human intelligence. The more classic definition (after a 1960's novella of the same name by Dino Buzzati), means the merging of tech with humans. Altman blogged about 'The Merge' in 2017. 'Although the merge has already begun, it's going to get a lot weirder. We will be the first species ever to design our own descendants,' he postulated at the time citing research work he saw at OpenAI, where Musk was still a co-founder. San Francisco | REGISTER NOW Musk left OpenAI in 2018 and the relationship between the two tech leaders has since disintegrated. Just this week, Altman and Musk were bickering on X after Altman accused Musk of manipulating X and Musk called Altman a liar. We'll have to wait and see when and if Merge Labs becomes formally announced. But it stands to reason that Altman wasn't going to let Musk work on something as important as the singularity without a challenger. OpenAI could not be immediately reached for comment and declined to comment on FT's report.
