Celebrate Kaamatan and Gawai in the Klang Valley

The Star22-05-2025
Going home to celebrate the harvest festival may not be feasible for most Sabahans and Sarawakians residing in Peninsular Malaysia. If this applies to you, fret not, you can still celebrate by partaking in these events that are happening in the Klang Valley throughout May and June.
Taking place this weekend in Kuala Lumpur is the Borneo Native Festival (BNF). Both Sabah's Kaamatan festival and Sarawak's Gawai Dayak, the Bornean states' respective harvest festivals, are the focus of the event.
Now in its fourth year, the 2025 edition of BNF will run from May 23 to May 25. It will be held at Central Market from 10am to 10pm throughout the three days.
Different activities are scheduled for each day, including Borneo craft workshops, music performances and traditional food demo.
The Borneo Beatz Concert will bring the festivities to a close on the final day, with performances by the likes of Alena Murang, At Adau, Belle Sisoski and Tompuvan.
If you are not from either state, your visit to the festival will give you the chance to experience the diverse cultures and traditions of Sabah and Sarawak.
More merriment
If you're a Sabahan craving for homecooked meals, or you just want a taste of the state's traditional cuisines, satiate your hunger at the Sabah Kaamatan Buffet by Ibis Kuala Lumpur City Centre.
Currently taking place at the hotel's Kampung Kitchen Buffet Restaurant until May 31, the buffet features a spread consisting of Sabah's traditional dishes such as hinava (raw fish salad), ambuyat (sticky sago) and linopot (leaf-wrapped rice).

Sabah Kaamatan Buffet offers authentic Sabahan dishes.
Ensuring authenticity, all ingredients are sourced from Sabah itself by chef Sandra Paut. This marks the third year in a row that the Kadazandusun chef, from My Native Sabah Restaurant in Kota Kinabalu, is flown in to curate the menu.
Sarawakians will also get a chance to savour their traditional dishes in June, as the hotel will be introducing its inaugural Sarawak-focused buffet early next month.
Speaking of Sarawak, since the state known for its traditional drink tuak, several joints in KL will be holding special events featuring the drink.
Among these is Nest13 Bar & Lounge in Petaling Jaya. You can grab some tuak cocktails at the rooftop bar during its Gawai Kaamatan Party Night on May 24. The event will feature traditional games and performances, as well as a live band, a best dressed contest and lucky draw sessions.
If you missed the party this weekend, you can head instead to Pisco Bar in KL on May 29. The bar's Gawai Kaamatan Festival will kick off at 8pm, featuring traditional dancing, games and, of course, plenty of tuak.
Havana Bar & Grill in KL will also hold its own Gawai Kaamatan Festival, happening on June 8.
Partying isn't your scene? Perhaps you'll be more interested in the Kuala Lumpur Borneo Half Marathon 2025. Entering its second year, the marathon runs on June 1 at Dataran Merdeka. Registration closes on May 28, check here for details.

Nikki Palikat confirms split from French beau

Your browser does not support the audio element. SINGER Nikki Palikat has confirmed that her relationship with a French man ended around six months ago. The 40-year-old Sabahan, whose full name is Nicolette Louise Palikat, said that they parted ways amicably and she is now content with living on her own. "There's nothing between us anymore. I'm single but not available. We've been apart for six months, and this is the first time I've been single in 15 years. "So, this is the time for me to live solo and have fun. I want things to be different. We also can't force things to happen, and we can't blame anyone. "We went our separate ways amicably," she said when met at The Chosen One Xtra press conference recently. However, Nikki said that the breakup had also made her somewhat sad. "We have to remind ourselves that everything happens for a reason. This situation is like a season; every season will surely pass. "When the season is over, we can look back and be grateful that we got through it. We become more mature and wiser," she said. Despite the sadness, the 'Pinta', 'Caramu', and 'Selamat Tinggal' singer remains open to meeting new people and settling down again if there's a suitable match. "I'm still open to getting married again. If there's a suitable man, why not? I'm a romantic person. I like marriage, and if the opportunity arises to fall in love again, I'm open to it. "I think I could be a good wife after what I've been through in life," she said, adding that she isn't actively seeking a partner at present. Last year, Nikki was reported to be in a relationship with a French man. They met when Nikki sought chiropractic treatment from him. The singer was previously married to composer Audi Mok in June 2009, but they divorced in June 2022. They have a 15-year-old son, Liam Mok.

Indie vibes take centre stage in KromaKuning's Sarawak Day tribute in Kuching

The 'KHEMAH I.N.D.I.E.P.E.N.D.E.N.C.E DAY' programme brought together local creatives in a night of music, expression, and community spirit. KUCHING (July 28): Over 50 people gathered at Khemah Café, Jalan Dagok Timur here to celebrate this year's Sarawak Day in an alternative and independent spirit. Themed 'KHEMAH I.N.D.I.E.P.E.N.D.E.N.C.E DAY', the programme was jointly organised by KolabBasi: Kumpulan Tidak Konsistan (KromaKuning) and Khemah Café, spotlighting the independent music scene and alternative artistic expression, offering a grassroots platform for the local voices. 'We built this event with the true spirit of independence; not just nostalgia, but the freedom to be yourself, to speak out, and to feel accepted without having to follow industry formulas. 'And most importantly, we did this with our own hands, for ourselves,' a KromaKuning spokesperson told The Borneo Post. The night featured performances by five independent acts, starting with a soulful R&B showcase by Dayangmu. Coming up next was Lydbie, who delivered introspective, melancholic pieces that resonated with the audience. Akmal Kamisly followed up with a solo set before being joined by Dayangmu for a duet. Wan Purong added humour and interactive energy to the evening, while Adruce Azman closed the event with a series of original songs that blended folk and jazz. His set began with a heartfelt rendition of 'Ibu Pertiwiku', paying tribute to Sarawak Day. Beyond the music, the event also included a digital campaign titled 'Follow & Freebie', which boosted online engagements. Attendees who followed the organisers' Instagram accounts (@kromakuning and @ received exclusive merchandise items, including limited edition stickers and customised design pieces. Those dressed in a 'camping vibes' theme received special drink promotions, further enhancing the laid-back and free-spirited atmosphere. 'This event is not just entertainment, but a manifestation of alternative voices that rarely find space in the mainstream. 'Through an open and community-driven format, we've created space for new talent to shine,' added the KromaKuning spokesperson. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing it as 'a fresh breeze' in the Sarawak Day celebration scene. KromaKuning expressed hope of making the camp-themed gathering an annual event, continuing the open mic sessions and alternative art programmes. 'We would also welcome collaborations with other groups in promoting independent culture and community arts,' said the spokesperson. KolabBasi is an independent art collective led by KromaKuning, engaging Sarawakians in music, visual arts, writing, and community activism. Known as the Kumpulan Tidak Konsistan, the group operates informally but consistently to champion a space for alternative expression in Borneo. Khemah Café, known for its tropical camping-themed décor, continues to serve as a hub for creative gatherings, including photo exhibitions, poetry readings, book discussions, and acoustic shows.
