Changing City: Bhayanderpada flyover promises faster, safer commutes in Thane

Indian Express23-05-2025

As Thane continues to expand and urbanise at a rapid pace, there was a need for infrastructure to cope with the mounting pressure on its roads. One such upgrade, the newly inaugurated Bhayanderpada flyover on Ghodbunder Road, is set to reduce the traffic issues for commuters.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the flyover on May 14 in the presence of Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and senior officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
About the project
The Bhayanderpada flyover is a 601-metre-long, four-lane elevated flyover built to address the perennial traffic bottlenecks on the busy Ghodbunder Road stretch. It is made a part of a larger multi-layered traffic solution which integrates three distinct infrastructure levels which include a surface road, a flyover and the upcoming Metro Line 4 viaduct, making it the first of its kind in the Thane region.
This configuration is intended to streamline traffic in one of the city's busiest corridors, where signalised junctions previously caused long delays. The flyover is constructed over the path of the upcoming Metro Lines 4 and 4A combining road and rail transport infrastructure within a single corridor.
Key Features
Flyover Length: 601 metres
Design Details: 391 metre ramp on the Thane side, a 20 metre underpass and a 189 metre ramp towards Borivali
Traffic Flow: 2+2 lane carriageway designed to handle 73,000 vehicles per day
Additional infrastructure: Dedicated pedestrian underpass for safe road crossing, minimising surface congestion
Integrated Transport: Aligned with Metro Lines 4 and 4A, offering seamless future connectivity
How will it benefit the public?
The most immediate benefit of the Bhayanderpada flyover is the reduction in travel time. Commuters travelling between Thane and Mumbai via Ghodbunder Road can expect to save up to 25 to 30 minutes on their daily commute. The flyover is expected to significantly decongest the stretch between Gaimukh and Waghbil, which has always suffered from heavy traffic due to freight trucks and office going vehicles.
By removing traffic signals at the junction and diverting inbound and outbound traffic through different routes, underpasses and the elevated corridor, respectively, the project facilitates smooth, uninterrupted movement. This also means reduced fuel consumption, fewer emissions and improved air quality for local residents.
Who will stand to gain?
Residents from areas such as Ghodbunder Road, Bhayanderpada, Waghbil, Brahmand, Kasarvadavali, and Thane East will see immediate and tangible benefits. Not only will commuting become faster, but safer too due to the improved pedestrian infrastructure and the minimisation of surface-level traffic interactions.
Furthermore, the flyover will enhance connectivity to and from vital economic zones, including Navi Mumbai, JNPT, Bhiwandi, Vasai-Virar, and even the industrial corridor towards Gujarat. Officials believe that this improved connectivity will help stimulate economic activity, offering better job opportunities and supporting local businesses.
Purpose and vision
More than just a flyover, the Bhayanderpada project represents the city's shift toward integrated, sustainable transport solutions. Once Metro Line 4 becomes operational, the flyover will offer easy access to Metro stations, promoting a shift from road to rail and reducing the city's overall carbon footprint.
As Mumbai and its satellite cities gear up for the monsoon, the opening of the Bhayanderpada flyover offers relief for Thane's overburdened roads promising commuters a faster travel.
Administration speak
Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, 'The inauguration of the Bhayanderpada underpass is a significant step toward creating a sustainable and efficient transport system in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This project will not only improve traffic flow but also boost economic and industrial activity. We are prioritizing ease and safety in the daily commute of citizens.'

Mumbai Metro: MMRDA installs 8 U-girders overnight at Kapurbawdi station on Line 4

In a major feat, eight U-girders were installed overnight at Kapurbawdi station, a key interchange point on the soon-to-open Mumbai Metro Line 4 from Wadala to Gaimukh. The installation is an important milestone in the completion of the 35.2-km fully elevated corridor being undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). According to MMRDA, the operation was conducted during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, and included the positioning of girders weighing nearly 98 metric tonnes each, adding up to a total of approximately 783 metric tonnes. It was executed carefully and with accuracy amid the flow of traffic. The operation was conducted across two spans, supporting both the up and down corridors. Kapurbawdi station, located on Ghodbunder Road in Thane, will serve as an important link between Metro Line 4 and the proposed Metro Line 5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan). Once operational, this multi-level interchange will significantly ease travel across Mumbai's extended suburbs and reduce traffic congestion on roadways. 'The station is being constructed as a new 185-metre-long elevated level with improved facilities to handle high-density Metro traffic. Its development sits within MMRDA's overall vision of bringing mobility solutions across the city closer together to facilitate quicker, greener commuting,' an MMRDA official said. More than 90 workers — riggers, skilled and unskilled labour, and traffic management officials — worked together to make this happen with the help of high-capacity cranes, multi-axle trailers, pullers, and lifting gear. Traffic officials were also kept informed to cause the least amount of inconvenience to commuters along Ghodbunder Road. Metro Line 4 will revolutionise east-west mobility, connecting Central Mumbai to Thane and beyond. It will have 32 stations, an automated train system, and energy efficient infrastructure. Upon completion, it will decrease travel time by 50-75 per cent on major routes and provide a clean and reliable alternative to road transport.

Mumbai metro line 4 achieves milestone with U-girder installation at Kapurbawdi station

Thane: The Mumbai Metro Line 4 (Wadala–Gaimukh) reached a major milestone with the successful overnight installation of eight U-girders at Kapurbawdi Metro station on Ghodbunder Road, officials said. Each U-girder, weighing approximately 97.92 metric tonnes and spanning 18 metres, was launched and installed within just eight hours, marking it as a first for any Mumbai Metro project executed by the MMRDA. This achievement is seen as critical, as the agency plans to begin trial runs on the stretch before the end of this year, as recently announced by MMRDA chairman and deputy CM Eknath Shinde. The Kapurbawdi station is a key interchange connecting Metro Line 4 (Wadala–Gaimukh) and Line 5 (Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan), making this construction phase vital. A coordinated team of engineers, workers, traffic police, and marshals deployed heavy-duty machinery—including a 550-tonne crane and three 500-tonne cranes—to complete the launching of the collectively 783.3-tonne heavy girders safely and efficiently at its location. "One of the biggest challenges was managing heavy traffic along Ghodbunder Road," said an MMRDA spokesperson. "Our teams created a detailed girder launching plan, conducted risk analysis, and coordinated with Thane traffic police to ensure a smooth execution with minimal disruption. Fortunately, everything went as planned, and the work finished ahead of schedule." Stretching 32.3 km and featuring 30 elevated stations, Metro Line 4 is poised to become the backbone of East Mumbai's transit network. It will integrate with the Eastern Express Highway, Central Railway, Mono Rail, and future Metro Lines 2B, 5, and 6, aiming to cut commute times by 50–75%. Meanwhile, following Shinde's recent announcement, the MMRDA is preparing to conduct a trial run on at least a small 10-km stretch between Cadbury Junction (Eastern Express Highway) and Gaimukh (Ghodbunder Road). Line 4, which connects Wadala with Kasarwadavli, extends further to Gaimukh as Line 4A, further strengthening Mumbai's metro connectivity. Once operational, it promises to significantly ease travel for thousands of commuters.
