Changing City: Bhayanderpada flyover promises faster, safer commutes in Thane
As Thane continues to expand and urbanise at a rapid pace, there was a need for infrastructure to cope with the mounting pressure on its roads. One such upgrade, the newly inaugurated Bhayanderpada flyover on Ghodbunder Road, is set to reduce the traffic issues for commuters.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the flyover on May 14 in the presence of Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and senior officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
About the project
The Bhayanderpada flyover is a 601-metre-long, four-lane elevated flyover built to address the perennial traffic bottlenecks on the busy Ghodbunder Road stretch. It is made a part of a larger multi-layered traffic solution which integrates three distinct infrastructure levels which include a surface road, a flyover and the upcoming Metro Line 4 viaduct, making it the first of its kind in the Thane region.
This configuration is intended to streamline traffic in one of the city's busiest corridors, where signalised junctions previously caused long delays. The flyover is constructed over the path of the upcoming Metro Lines 4 and 4A combining road and rail transport infrastructure within a single corridor.

Mumbai Metro: MMRDA installs 8 U-girders overnight at Kapurbawdi station on Line 4
In a major feat, eight U-girders were installed overnight at Kapurbawdi station, a key interchange point on the soon-to-open Mumbai Metro Line 4 from Wadala to Gaimukh. The installation is an important milestone in the completion of the 35.2-km fully elevated corridor being undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). According to MMRDA, the operation was conducted during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, and included the positioning of girders weighing nearly 98 metric tonnes each, adding up to a total of approximately 783 metric tonnes. It was executed carefully and with accuracy amid the flow of traffic. The operation was conducted across two spans, supporting both the up and down corridors. Kapurbawdi station, located on Ghodbunder Road in Thane, will serve as an important link between Metro Line 4 and the proposed Metro Line 5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan). Once operational, this multi-level interchange will significantly ease travel across Mumbai's extended suburbs and reduce traffic congestion on roadways. 'The station is being constructed as a new 185-metre-long elevated level with improved facilities to handle high-density Metro traffic. Mumbai metro line 4 achieves milestone with U-girder installation at Kapurbawdi station
Thane: The Mumbai Metro Line 4 (Wadala–Gaimukh) reached a major milestone with the successful overnight installation of eight U-girders at Kapurbawdi Metro station on Ghodbunder Road, officials said. Each U-girder, weighing approximately 97.92 metric tonnes and spanning 18 metres, was launched and installed within just eight hours, marking it as a first for any Mumbai Metro project executed by the MMRDA. This achievement is seen as critical, as the agency plans to begin trial runs on the stretch before the end of this year, as recently announced by MMRDA chairman and deputy CM Eknath Shinde. The Kapurbawdi station is a key interchange connecting Metro Line 4 (Wadala–Gaimukh) and Line 5 (Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan), making this construction phase vital. A coordinated team of engineers, workers, traffic police, and marshals deployed heavy-duty machinery—including a 550-tonne crane and three 500-tonne cranes—to complete the launching of the collectively 783.3-tonne heavy girders safely and efficiently at its location. "One of the biggest challenges was managing heavy traffic along Ghodbunder Road," said an MMRDA spokesperson. Stretching 32.3 km and featuring 30 elevated stations, Metro Line 4 is poised to become the backbone of East Mumbai's transit network. Meanwhile, following Shinde's recent announcement, the MMRDA is preparing to conduct a trial run on at least a small 10-km stretch between Cadbury Junction (Eastern Express Highway) and Gaimukh (Ghodbunder Road). Line 4, which connects Wadala with Kasarwadavli, extends further to Gaimukh as Line 4A, further strengthening Mumbai's metro connectivity. Once operational, it promises to significantly ease travel for thousands of commuters.
