Mat Sabu: Malaysia produced over half a million tonnes of coconuts in 2024
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said only a small quantity of coconuts was imported, with 96.8 per cent of total production distributed to local markets.
"Of the total production, 652,253 metric tons were allocated for the domestic market, while 21,300 metric tons were exported," he said in a written parliamentary reply last night.
Responding to Wan Razali Wan Nor (PN–Kuantan), Mohamad said the Agriculture Department has provided incentives to farmers under the Coconut Industry Development Project.
The initiative includes replanting old or unproductive trees, restoring productivity, and integrating coconut cultivation with crops, livestock, and aquaculture to generate short-term income.
The incentives provided include agricultural inputs such as seedlings, fertilisers, pesticides, and herbicides, as well as basic farm infrastructure support, including land preparation, drainage systems, and small-scale farm equipment.
The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama), through its subsidiary Fama Corporation Sdn Bhd (Famaco), sourced 1,506 metric tons of peeled old coconuts worth RM3.5 million from Sabah and Indonesia between January and July 14, 2025.
The coconuts were distributed via three operation centres to 509 Fama marketing outlets and 202 coconut milk operators across the country to ensure a stable supply for consumers.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day here on Sunday, Anwar said the Federal Government will also continue to safeguard the nation's sovereignty against any form of intrusion, whether on land or at sea. He further emphasised that Malaysia is prepared to bring matters concerning Sabah's rights and the country's sovereignty to international court proceedings if necessary. 'Why are we doing this? Because this is our country — Sabah is part of Malaysia. We are spending tens of millions of Ringgit, maybe a hundred million Ringgit, to defend our rights. We will not allow even an inch of our land or sea to be encroached upon. 'Wherever it may be — in the Spanish courts or internationally — we will fight to the maximum to defend Sabah's rights because Sabah is part of Malaysia,' he said. Also present were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, and his deputy Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup. Anwar said the MADANI Government is committed to driving Sabah's development and resolving demands under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) through various initiatives and allocations, stressing that the relationship between the state and Federal Governments must remain strong. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said among the resolved matters is the interim special grant for Sabah, which has been increased from RM300 million to RM600 million this year, along with an allocation of RM10 billion to complete the Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah. 'It (Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah) was delayed under the previous government, but we are continuing it under the responsibility of the Federal Government. Maybe it's not visible yet, not completed, but at least we've approved it and the work packages are in progress,' he said. On utilities, Anwar said the Federal Government has given full authority over electricity supply management to the state government, along with continuous subsidies for seven years until 2030 amounting to RM3.54 billion. To address the ongoing water supply issues, the Federal Government has approved an allocation of RM300 million, in addition to handing over projects worth under RM50 million to the state administration.

Malaysia to enhance foreign fishing vessel control with e-PSM system
KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia is enhancing its oversight of foreign fishing vessels entering national waters through the launch of the Electronic Port State Measures (e-PSM) system. This initiative, aligned with international standards and under Section 15(2) of the Fisheries Act 1985, aims to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Fisheries Malaysia director-general Datuk Adnan Hussain stated that the e-PSM system streamlines the application process for foreign vessels entering Malaysian ports, boosts enforcement efficiency, and solidifies Malaysia's commitment to addressing IUU fishing. "Foreign vessels must secure prior approval from the Department of Fisheries before docking at any Malaysian port. Through e-PSM, vessel owners must submit an application with details of their proposed entry date, destination port, and intended catch for landing. This information is thoroughly evaluated for authorisation," he explained. Adnan emphasised that failing to enforce such measures could be seen as tacit support for IUU fishing. Although Malaysia has not ratified the Port State Measures Agreement, the country remains dedicated to its principles. During the launch ceremony of the e-PSM system, held as a sidebar event to the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day 2025 on Saturday (Aug 2), Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu officially launched the system. He also highlighted that a key objective of e-PSM is to ensure only vessels free from IUU fishing records are granted access and that any landed catch adheres to international conservation regulations, including CITES-listed species. "Foreign vessels must declare their catch. If the species involved are restricted or banned under international law, landing will not be permitted. "Applications are assessed in collaboration with international agencies, including those from Australia, the European Union, and regional bodies like the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission and the Western Pacific Tuna Commission, to verify the registration and status of vessels applying for entry," he said. Between 2024 and 2025, 20 foreign vessels have been approved for entry into Malaysian ports, resulting in the landing of 550 metric tonnes of tuna and related species at the Port of Penang, he noted. The Department of Fisheries actively promotes the e-PSM system through its official website and local authorised agents, who are required to submit applications on behalf of vessel owners for approval and monitoring purposes.

Sabahan wins national award for million-ringgit aquaculture success

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 3): From a humble start-up capital of just RM5,000, Sabah's prominent young entrepreneur and athlete Jonathan Wong has built a thriving aquaculture business with annual revenue surpassing RM1 million in just nine years. In recognition of his achievements, Jonathan was conferred the 'Penternak Ikan Jaya' award by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the award presentation and closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 held at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here on Sunday. He received a trophy and RM20,000 cash prize from Anwar, in the presence of the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup and Deputy Chief Minister cum Agriculture and Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan. Jonathan said he established his company in 2016 with only RM5,000 in capital. After nine years of hard work, research and development, the company now earns over RM1 million in annual revenue. The company's core operations include the farming of white shrimp, milkfish, hydroponics, eggs farming and related processed products. Moving forward, Jonathan said his company aims to adopt more IoT-based systems to increase both production output and quality through smart farming technologies. 'We will implement more modern technologies and methods to improve the survival rates and the quality of aquaculture products,' he said. Jonathan is known for his boldness in innovation, having cultured duckweed as a key ingredient in fish feed, a breakthrough that earned him the Most Outstanding Commercial Collaboration Award in Eskpo Kecemerlangan Reka Cipta (Excocipta) 2024. Jonathan is not only a successful young entrepreneur with a sharp business acumen but also a world-class athlete, having represented Malaysia in international long jump competitions. He has won numerous major awards, including two gold medals at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix and making it into the Paralympic finals twice, bringing glory to the nation. Wong is also dedicated to nurturing future athletes. He currently serves as the president of the Sabah Para Swimming Association, which under his leadership, achieved an impressive 17 gold, seven silver and three bronze medals at the XXI Sukma Para Games in Sarawak last year.
