Oil retreats as US tariff uncertainty looms, OPEC+ set to raise output

SINGAPORE: Oil prices fell on Thursday after gaining three per cent in the previous session as investors remained wary that higher US tariffs may be reinstated — potentially weakening fuel demand — and as major producers are expected to announce an output hike.
Brent crude futures fell 45 cents, or 0.65 per cent, to US$68.66 a barrel by 0645 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate crude declined 44 cents, or 0.66 per cent, to US$67.01 a barrel.
Both contracts rose to their highest in one week on Wednesday after Iran suspended cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, raising concerns that the lingering dispute over the Middle East producer's nuclear programme may again devolve into armed conflict. This, combined with the preliminary US-Vietnam trade deal, had boosted sentiment temporarily.
Still, there is increasing uncertainty around US trade policy as the 90-day pause on the implementation of higher tariffs will end on July 9 without any new trade deals with several large trading partners such as the European Union and Japan.
Additionally, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies such as Russia — known as OPEC+ — are likely to agree to raise their output by 411,000 barrels per day (bpd) at their meeting this weekend.
With uncertainty surrounding both events, and the upcoming July Fourth Independence Day holiday in the US, "market participants will probably not want to carry too much risk into the long US weekend," ING analysts said in a note on Thursday.
Adding to the negative sentiment, a private-sector survey showed on Thursday that service activity in China — the world's biggest oil importer — expanded at the slowest pace in nine months in June as demand weakened and new export orders declined.
A surprise build in US crude inventories also underscored demand concerns in the world's biggest crude consumer.
The US Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday that domestic crude inventories rose by 3.80 million barrels to 419 million barrels last week. Analysts in a Reuters poll had expected a drawdown of 1.80 million barrels.
Gasoline demand on a weekly basis dropped to 8.6 million barrels per day, prompting concerns about consumption during the peak US summer driving season.
The market will also be watching the release of the key US monthly employment report on Thursday to help shape expectations around the depth and timing of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in the second half of this year.
Lower interest rates could spur economic activity, which would in turn boost oil demand.
A private payrolls report on Wednesday showed a contraction for the first time in two years, though analysts cautioned there is no direct correlation between it and the government data.

PM Anwar's inaugural official visit to France to strengthen bilateral ties

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has embarked on an inaugural official visit to France from July 3 to 4 at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron. Malaysia's Ambassador to France Datuk Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim said the visit carries an official status and signifies France's strong commitment towards its diplomatic ties with Malaysia since Anwar assumed premiership in 2022. 'This official visit status is also significant for the continued strengthening of our bilateral diplomatic ties,' he said to the Malaysian media through an online conference from Paris on Wednesday. Eldeen Husaini said Anwar would be received by the French top leadership at the airport, followed by an inspection of a guard of honour and an engagement session with the Malaysian diaspora in France. Anwar is scheduled to hold a one-on-one meeting with Macron at the Élysée Palace, with key agenda items including trade, investment, renewable energy, semiconductors, defence, education, digital economy, and artificial intelligence (AI). 'Malaysia expects this official visit will boost investor confidence in exploring new investment opportunities and strengthen bilateral economic cooperation, particularly in the nuclear and clean energy sectors,' he told the Malaysian media in an online briefing from Paris on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Malaysia also expresses support for France's effort to host a conference to work towards a solution for the Palestine-Israel conflict and discuss regional issues such as the South China Sea and the stability of Southeast Asia in Malaysia's capacity as the 2025 ASEAN Chair. Eldeen Husaini said a lecture by the prime minister titled Southeast Asia and Europe: Recalibrating the Terms of Engagement will be held at Sorbonne University, a world-renowned institution in the intellectual and cultural spheres. 'He will also attend a session with 250 members of the Malaysian diaspora, deliver a lecture, and attend Friday prayer with Muslim community leaders at the Grand Mosque of Paris, one of the oldest mosques in France,' he said. 'This visit aims to open a new chapter in bilateral relations, drive national economic growth, and enhance Malaysia's competitiveness in the global supply chain,' he added. Anwar is accompanied on this visit by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, and Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Also joining the delegation is Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. France remains one of Malaysia's top five trading partners within the European Union. In 2024, bilateral trade totalled RM15.95 billion (US$3.63 billion), with RM6.26 billion (US$1.49 billion) recorded between January and May this year. Following his visit to France, Anwar will head to Brazil to attend the BRICS Leaders Summit from July 5 to 7. Anwar is currently undertaking a visit to three countries - Italy, France, and Brazil - from July 1 to 7.

EU chief says Brussels ‘ready' for US trade deal ahead of talks

AARHUS: The EU is 'ready for a deal' with the United States, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said Thursday before negotiators meet in Washington before a July 9 deadline. EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic is in Washington and due to meet his US counterparts later Thursday. The commission, leading trade policy for the 27-nation bloc, has until Wednesday next week to strike an agreement or see President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs snap back. If no deal is reached, the default tariff on EU imports is expected to double to 20 percent or even higher -- Trump having at one point threatened 50 percent. 'We are aiming at the ninth of July,' von der Leyen told reporters in Aarhus, Denmark. 'It's a huge task because we have the largest trade volume globally between the European Union and the United States,' worth 1.5 trillion euros ($1.8 trillion). 'What we are aiming at is an agreement in principle,' she added. The size of trade between the two transatlantic allies meant an agreement in detail was 'impossible' to conclude in the 90-day window ending next week, she added. Von der Leyen's comments came as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reiterated his call for a 'quick and simple' EU deal with Washington -- a matter of necessity for key industries from pharmaceuticals to engineering and automobiles. The EU chief also made it clear that Brussels would not hold back from taking countermeasures to protect the European economy if talks fell short. 'We want a negotiated solution, but you all know that at the same time, we're preparing for the possibility that no satisfactory agreement is reached,' she said. 'This is why we consulted on a rebalancing list, and we will defend the European interest as needed,' she added. 'In other words, all the interim instruments are on the table.' The EU has prepared counter-tariffs on US goods worth around 100 billion euros if talks yield no positive outcome. – AFP
