‘We will work to unite parties to defeat DMK'

Chennai: Tamil Manila Congress (TMC) president G K Vasan on Tuesday said that his party will work to unite all political parties opposing
DMK
in Tamil Nadu.
At a public meeting in Chennai to mark the 123rd birth anniversary of former chief minister K Kamaraj, Vasan said defeating DMK in the 2026 assembly election is the need of the hour.
"TMC will work to unite all parties that are against DMK to defeat the DMK govt in the 2026 election,'' he said.
The TMC president said the law and order situation has deteriorated in the state. "The only solution is to send DMK out of power," Vasan said.

Referring to the 'Makkalai Kaappom, Tamizhagathai Meetpom' campaign of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, Vasan said the campaign was turning out to be a success.
"The campaign will add further strength to our alliance," he said.
Vasan alleged that several Union govt schemes have not reached Tamil Nadu due to the DMK govt that is blindly opposing the BJP govt at the centre. "Tamil Nadu has not grown because of this," he said, adding that the next TN govt formed by their alliance will work in cooperation with the Union govt.
"If we want 100% growth for Tamil Nadu, we need to have a smooth relationship with the Union govt," Vasan said.

Kumbakonam residents urge Centre to sanction new rail line between Needamangalam and Vriddhachalam

Train travellers and residents of Kumbakonam have urged the Union government to sanction a new railway line between Needamangalam and Vriddhachalam via Kumbakonam and Jayamkondam. The new rail line, if built, would give a fillip to economic growth in the hitherto unserved areas and spiritual tourism in the State, they said. Representations in this regard have been sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw by the Kumbakonam All Traders Association and Thanjavur District Railway Users Association. 'The benefits of a new railway line of less than 100 km between Needamangalam and Vriddhachalam would bring huge economic benefits,' says V. Sathyanarayanan, Secretary, Kumbakonam All Traders Association. The line could provide connectivity to Gangaikonda Cholapuram, where the famous Brihadisvara Temple built by King Rajendra Chola I is situated. With the Prime Minister scheduled to visit Gangaikonda Cholapuram later this month, it would be apt for the Railway Ministry to announce new rail line now, Mr. Sathyanarayanan said. Kumbakonam is an important spiritual, commercial, and historic city in Tamil Nadu. It is located in the single line section between Thanjavur and Villupuram on the 147-year-old Main Line section of Southern Railway. The Mahamaham festival, popularly known as the Kumbh of the South, is celebrated here once every 12 years. The city attracts continuous flow of pilgrims from different parts of the country through the year as it is also the hub for visiting the Navagraha temples. Yet Kumbakonam is neglected in terms of traffic and development as it has not been upgraded as a junction, he regretted. The demand for this new line had been in existence for over 50 years ago and a question in this regard had been raised even in Parliament in 1955, said A. Giri, secretary, Thanjavur District Railway Users Association. Considering the repeated demand, a preliminary survey was conducted for a new line between Kumbakonam and Vriddachalam in June 2016. The project is awaiting approval ever since, he said. The new line between Needamangalam and Vriddhachallam via Kumbakonam will provide an alternative shorter route to Salem, Bengaluru, Tirupati and other destinations from Rameswaram and southern Tamil Nadu via Pattukottai and Mannargudi. It would ensure speedy movement of freight traffic from Karaikal Port and boost spiritual tourism as it would connect places such as Kumbakonam and Gangaikonda Cholapuram. By providing train connectivity to under developed places such as Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Jayamkondam, and Andimadam, it would boost economic growth in the region, Mr. Giri added.

In a post on X, he recalled that social reofmer Periyar hiled Kamaraj as a true Tamilian and DMK Founder and late CM C N Annadurai did not field a candidate against Kamaraj in the bypoll to Gudiyatham Assembly seat. Recalling all the arrangements made by late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi like a son for the last rites of Mr Kamaraj after he died, Mr Stain said it was Mr Karunanidhi who constructed a memorial for him and declared his birth anniversary as Education Development Day. Mr Stalin said he felt humbled when Mr Kamaraj, depsite his ill health, attended his marriage and showered his blessings. "I felt it as a honour", he added. Ponting out that Kamaraj had dedcated his life to social justice, communal harmony and secularism, Mr Stalin, without making any direct reference to the remarksmade by Siva, who is also the Deputy General Secretary of the DMK, observed that it was unfair to have any unnecesary debates about such a great leader and called for preserving his respect and dignity. Mr Siva's remarks has caused some heartburn among the Congress functionaries and wokers and resulted in unease in the Congress-DMK ties. Some of the congress functionaries also called for action against Siva and Lok Sabha MP Ms Jothimani said she would take up the matter with Mr Stalin. Opposition party leaders, including AIADMK, BJP, PMK, AMMK and other parties also condemned the remarks of Siva and sought to know whether the Congress was prepared to quit the DMK front for insulting Kamaraj. Talking to reporters, former BJP National Governing Council member and former State President K Annamalai said the DMK had no right to talk about the late leader, as it was responsible for defeating him in the 1967 elections.
