‘We will work to unite parties to defeat DMK'
Chennai: Tamil Manila Congress (TMC) president G K Vasan on Tuesday said that his party will work to unite all political parties opposing DMK in Tamil Nadu. At a public meeting in Chennai to mark the 123rd birth anniversary of former chief minister K Kamaraj, Vasan said defeating DMK in the 2026 assembly election is the need of the hour. "TMC will work to unite all parties that are against DMK to defeat the DMK govt in the 2026 election,'' he said. The TMC president said the law and order situation has deteriorated in the state. "The only solution is to send DMK out of power," Vasan said. "The campaign will add further strength to our alliance," he said. Vasan alleged that several Union govt schemes have not reached Tamil Nadu due to the DMK govt that is blindly opposing the BJP govt at the centre. "Tamil Nadu has not grown because of this," he said, adding that the next TN govt formed by their alliance will work in cooperation with the Union govt. Tamil Nadu HR&CE minister defends use of temple funds for education amid EPS criticism
CHENNAI: Hitting back at AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) for criticising the use of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department funds to build educational institutions, Tamil Nadu HR&CE Minister P. K. Sekarbabu on Tuesday accused the opposition leader of being "steeped in ignorance" and lacking awareness of historical precedents. Sekarbabu's sharp response came after Palaniswami, while addressing a public meeting in Coimbatore during his ongoing state-wide campaign 'Makkalai Kaappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom', questioned the DMK government's move to construct colleges using temple donations. "There is nothing wrong in building colleges," Palaniswami said from his campaign vehicle, "but the AIADMK government did it using its own funds, not the offerings of devotees." Countering this, Sekarbabu stated that several educational institutions have already been successfully established using HR&CE funds. "What is wrong with building colleges for the welfare of students?" he asked, defending the initiative and ridiculing Palaniswami's comments. "His remarks only expose his ignorance about the functioning of the HR&CE department and its long-standing tradition of using temple resources for public good." The HR&CE Minister also pointed out that temples under the department's control have always been central to community development, including in the areas of education and healthcare. Meanwhile, parents of students from Arulmigu Sri Kapaleeswarar Arts and Science College in Chief Minister M. K. Stalin's Kolathur constituency staged a protest condemning Palaniswami's criticism. Holding placards that read "It is not wrong to build colleges using temple funds," the parents gathered on the college premises and raised slogans expressing support for the government's initiative. The Kolathur-based college, one of several institutions built using HR&CE funds, currently has over 750 students enrolled across five academic streams. The HR&CE minister also said that the protest from the parent community reflects a growing public endorsement of the HR&CE department's efforts to utilise temple resources for expanding educational access, especially in areas where more institutions were required. AIADMK will get absolute majority in 2026 Assembly poll: Palaniswami
Ahead of his State-wide tour, set to begin in Coimbatore on Monday, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday reiterated that his party would secure an 'absolute majority' and form the next government in the State in 2026. The people of Tamil Nadu wanted a change and were prepared to send home the DMK government led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, which has reportedly not fulfilled a majority of electoral promises it had made to the people, the Leader of the Opposition said. 'Let us recall our achievements. We will certainly win in 2026. The AIADMK will get an absolute majority and form the government,' he said in an open letter to his partymen. The people, according to him, were angry at the corruption rampant in the DMK government. The educated youth were angry at Mr. Stalin for not having created employment, Mr. Palaniswami said. Electoral promises 'The Stalin government has not fulfilled a majority of the electoral promises it made to the people. So, the people of Tamil Nadu are quite angry,' Mr. Palaniswami contended. Underlining the lessons he had learnt from late AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa, Mr. Palaniswami said his only unfulfilled desire was to remove darkness from the lives of the people of Tamil Nadu and make the State shine. 'I am your general secretary. However, I am also the first of the partymen to work along with you,' he said. Referring to his 'Makkalai Kaappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom' campaign, which he is planning to undertake across Tamil Nadu, Mr. Palaniswami called upon his partymen to join the mission. 'After Puratchi Thalaivi Amma (her tenure), the AIADMK has been the ruling party and, later, the principal Opposition party. Thereby, a force that cannot be removed from the political landscape.' In another statement, Mr. Palaniswami criticised the DMK government's proposal to install LED screens at various places to showcase its achievements during the past four years. Referring to recent orders in this regard, the former Chief Minister said people in rural areas suffered without proper road and drainage facilities and electricity supply, among others. 'I urge the DMK government to drop the proposal that would waste the taxpayer's money,' he added.
