CTA to clean up 6 stations as part of Refresh & Renew program

CBS News24-04-2025
The Chicago Transit Authority has begun spring cleaning.
The transit agency has started work on its seasonal Refresh & Renew program. The CTA will spend $6.5 million on repairs and maintenance this year at rail and bus locations citywide. Through Memorial Day weekend, improvements will be made at six specific 'L' stops and three bus turnarounds:
63rd Street and the Dan Ryan Expressway on the Red Line.
Pulaski, Austin, and Kedzie-Homan along the Eisenhower Expressway on the Blue Line.
Oak Park on the Lake Street branch and Halsted on the Englewood branch of the Green Line.
Bus turnarounds at 63rd Street and Kedzie Avenue, 79th Street and Western Avenue on the Southwest Side, Chicago Avenue and Austin Boulevard on the West Side along the boundary with Oak Park, and 67th Street and Oglesby Avenue in South Shore alongside Jackson Park.
The work includes plumbing repairs, replacing lights and signs, and removing outdated equipment.
"The Refresh & Renew program provides our riders and employees with a cleaner, more comfortable CTA travel experience," CTA Acting President Nora Leerhsen said in a news release. "This important program ensures that rail station repairs and upgrades are made proactively and quickly, and is a vital and effective supplement to the day-to-day cleaning our crews do."
Recently, Refresh & Renew work was completed at both baseball stadium Red Line stops — Addison and Sox-35th — as well as the 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stop on the Green Line just the other side of the Dan Ryan — in time for the Cubs and White Sox home openers.
More bus and rail locations will undergo Refresh & Renew work at later dates.
The Refresh & Renew program was created in 2019, and is intended to keep CTA station sin good repair with routine maintenance. The work enhances the safety, security, and aesthetics of the system, the CTA said.

‘Ghost buses' may no longer haunt riders, now that the CTA is publicly sharing data on canceled runs

After years of rider complaints about 'ghost buses' — buses that show up on transit tracker apps but fail to arrive in real life — the CTA has started publicly sharing data about canceled bus runs. The data is available on the CTA's online bus tracker at CTA spokesperson Manny Gonzales said. The CTA has not yet started sharing canceled bus information on its ticketing app, Ventra, which also has a bus and train tracking function. Gonzales said the agency was working with the Ventra team to make the information available there. The third-party Transit app has begun using the agency's data to alert riders when a scheduled bus has been canceled, the Chicago Sun-Times first reported Monday. The Transit app has been marking canceled bus runs with a strike-through, said the app's policy lead, Stephen Miller. 'Hopefully this allows people to have a lot more confidence whenever they take CTA to know if and when their bus is coming,' Miller told the Tribune. Over the last several years, ghost buses have been a source of frustration for some riders. Because the tracker apps rely on both real-time and scheduled service data, they sometimes display arrival times for buses that are not actually coming. The ghost bus issue was particularly severe in the immediate aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading exasperated transit activists to post stickers on bus stops around the city asking 'Tired of being ghosted by the CTA?' At the time, the transit agency attributed the unreliable service to staffing shortages which it says have since largely eased. The agency said it has since reduced the number of canceled trips. The CTA started testing the canceled bus data-sharing late last year, according to the agency's social media. Gonzales said the CTA started consistently publishing the cancellation data garage-by-garage in May, with data from buses at all CTA's garages online by early July. The CTA is also working on publishing canceled train information, he said. In the future, the CTA also plans to make public data about where buses on detours have been rerouted. In a statement, the CTA's acting president, Nora Leerhsen, described the new cancellation data as a 'critical step in transparency.' Leerhsen said she was 'looking forward to our continued implementation of data-informed, technological initiatives that empower our riders.' The change comes as the CTA, along with the region's other mass transit agencies, are facing an impending budget deficit in the hundreds of millions of dollars. If state lawmakers don't find more funding for transit soon, the agencies have warned, they could be forced to slash up to 40% of service next year.

Bitcoin Recovery at Risk Amid Macro Headwinds

Bitcoin's slow strut over the weekend has partially undone last week's losses, but analysts remain cautious. While the top crypto is up 1.5% from Saturday's low of $112,692, its recovery may be short-lived due to mounting headwinds, and a sharp reversal is possible, according to experts Decrypt spoke to on Monday. The first major headwind is an overexposed US equity market. Nomura data shows that Commodity Trading Advisor (CTA) positions are at 110% long equity exposure—a level not seen in four years. This has driven "market momentum," as Han Qin, CEO of tokenized investment platform Jarsy, told Decrypt, but he adds that this also makes the market "more vulnerable to sharp reversals." A broad equity pullback triggered by CTA deleveraging could cause risk assets, including Bitcoin, to face short-term pressure. This pressure from traditional markets is coupled with sustained selling from within the crypto space itself. Sean Dawson, head of research at on-chain options platform Derive, toldDecrypt that options traders are bracing for a pullback, targeting $100,000 to $80,000 puts. These traders are expecting a price reversal of somewhere between 10% and 30% over the next month. The outlook is made even more sensitive by recent macroeconomic data. The downward revisions of the Nonfarm Payrolls for May and June by 258,000 have put the market on edge. A Period of "Chopsolidation" Amidst these bearish signals, not everyone anticipates a dramatic crash. Maarten Regterschot, a CryptoQuant analyst, told Decrypt that he doesn't expect Bitcoin to break below $112,000. Instead, he anticipates a period of "chopsolidation" following the recent short-term holder selling spree, suggesting a period of sideways trading is more likely than a full-blown price collapse. While some analysts are hinting at a more aggressive Fed pivot, that potential catalyst is still months away. "Fed pivot is coming," said Fundstrat Capital CIO Tom Lee in a tweet, acknowledging the severity of the downward revisions to jobs data. This sentiment is echoed by Jamie Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group, who told Fortune that there "might be a 50-basis-point" rate cut. The CME's FedWatch Tool shows an 81.7% chance of a 25 basis point rate cut in September, Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data
