Red numbers abound on opening day of Golfweek Pacific Northwest Senior Amateur

USA Today02-07-2025
On a picturesque, if warm, day in Washington's wine country, players had to score to contend at the Golfweek Pacific Northwest Senior Amateur. Perhaps no one embodied that better than Scott Masingill, the Payette, Idaho, native who is co-leading the Super Senior division.
Masingill's card prompts a double-take. In the opening round at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla, Washington, Masingill started his day with nine 3s – birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie. In fact, he made 3 on half the holes he played for his 4-under 68.
This is unsurprising from Masingill, whose golf life in the Pacific Northwest has been highlighted by a stout junior and college career, including the 1971 Pac-8 individual title while playing for Oregon State. He made a quick foray into professional senior golf but has since returned to the amateur game.
Masingill was inducted into the Idaho Golf Association's Hall of Fame inaugural class in 2024. In 2019, the IGA named the state amateur trophy after him. He has won that event nine times in his life.
At Wine Valley, Masingill shares the Super Senior lead with another PNW legend, however. Pat O'Donnell, a Pacific Northwest Golf Association Hall of Famer, also fired an opening 68. Last year, O'Donnell opened this event with 67 for the lead.
O'Donnell is familiar with Wine Valley through his good friend Jim Pliska, the course owner.
Pliska, who is also in the field, is third in the Super Senior division after a 2-under 70. He had only one bogey for the day.
Pliska runs Space Age Fuel, one of the largest independent fuel marketers in Oregon, and in addition to Wine Valley also owns Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Oregon. The latter course is home to the University of Oregon golf teams.
Despite his busy work schedule, Pliska competes six or seven times a year and is constantly working on his game as he splits his time between the Pacific Northwest, Southern California and Las Vegas.
'My game, I can feel it's getting better but getting it consistently better,' Pliska told Golfweek this spring, 'it's still got work to be done.'
Scores were also low in the Senior division, as co-leaders Donald Bidinger of Bainbridge Island, Washington, and Chris Brauner of Middleton, Wisconsin, used rounds of 3-under 69 to climb to the top of the leaderboard. They lead Juan Angel, of Colombia, by a shot.
Angel is the No. 2-ranked player in the 55-and-over category according to the World Amateur Golf Ranking. He has competed in the Latin America Amateur Championship the past three years and won several senior events in Colombia.
Behind Angel, four players are tied for fourth at 1 under: Greg Chianello, Craig Larson, Kevin VandenBerg and Trent Gregory.
Dan Parkinson of Lehi, Utah, and Gerry Graham of Mesa, Arizona, are tied atop the Legends division after rounds of 2-over 74. Parkinson is ranked No. 6 in Golfweek's National Senior Amateur Ranking for Legends players.

CPKC Women's Open golf course features an inclined elevator to get players to 16th tee

Golf Channel's Tom Abbott gave fans an inside look at a rare sight at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club, home of this week's CPKC Women's Open. While it's closed this week for the championship, Abbott took a ride from the 15th green to the 16th tee in the club's inclinator, an inclined elevator Abbott likened to a funicular. According to the city's website, the inclinator was built in 1940. The course opened in 1906. While the majority of the Ontario course was built along the Credit River, the last several holes are perched on higher ground, including a particularly steep climb to the 16th. 'There's no better way to do it than in the inclinator,' said Abbott during the early portion of Thursday's telecast, 'which is, I think, one of the most unique things that I have seen on a golf course in all my time. It's a very leisurely, peaceful ride up the side of the hill.' Abbott noted that there aren't many of these left on golf courses, though a couple may still be found in Canada. New-look UCLA aims for turnaround with transfer quarterback Nico Iamaleava

LOS ANGELES — DeShaun Foster got busy overhauling most of his coaching staff after his first season at UCLA. He upgraded the roster, making a splash in the transfer portal by landing quarterback Nico Iamaleava. Iamaleava left Tennessee before the spring game to return home to Los Angeles, where he'll try to take the Bruins to heights they haven't been in years. UCLA was 5-7 overall and 3-6 in its debut season in the Big Ten Conference under Foster. The Bruins' last double-digit win season was in 2014 and they've made just three bowl appearances since 2017, losing twice. Iamaleava is among 55 new players in Westwood, along with eight new assistants. He didn't participate in spring camp, so how quickly the Bruins come together will be something to watch. 'I love how humble he is,' Foster said. 'He's open to learning anything and he hasn't big-timed anybody in our program. He's always in there acting like one of the regular guys, like he's been here the whole time.' Nico and Tino Tino Sunseri replaces offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who was fired after one season. Sunseri helped Indiana average 41.3 points — second-best in the nation — and reach the College Football Playoff last year. Sunseri, 36, played quarterback at Pitt and went on to the Canadian Football League before starting his coaching career with stops including Florida State and Alabama. 'I just love Tino's energy,' Foster said. 'He's played quarterback at a high level and he just holds them accountable.' Sunseri and Iamaleava hit it off early on. 'The thing about Nico is he's a self-driven person. He has a certain standard of how he wants to operate each day,' Sunseri said. 'There's not one day that he hasn't come in here that he's not focused on being able to become the best player he can be for UCLA.' Sunseri is working with a retooled offensive line that includes Kentucky transfer Courtland Ford and Florida State transfer Julian Armella. Iamaleava's younger brother, Madden, is a quarterback, too. He originally committed to the Bruins and then bailed on signing day to join Arkansas. He spent half the spring with the Razorbacks before also coming home. Defense Over half the projected starting lineup on defense is made up of transfers, including linebackers Isaiah Chisom from Oregon State and Ben Perry from Louisville. The Bruins ranked 39th in the country with 340.8 yards per game allowed last season. The lone returning starter is defensive tackle Siale Taupaki, who made seven starts. 'With this much turnover, we have to find ways to get this team to jell,' Foster said. 'You're going to see growth in my team.' The schedule The Bruins open with former Pac-12 Conference rival Utah on Aug. 30 at the Rose Bowl, followed by a trip to UNLV in Allegiant Stadium and a home game against New Mexico on Sept. 13. The schedule gets tough with a visit by national title contender No. 2 Penn State on Oct. 4 and road games at No. 20 Indiana on Oct. 25 and No. 3 Ohio State on Nov. 15. The Bruins close the regular season with a visit to crosstown rival USC on Nov. 29.

Jackson Koivun wins Mark H. McCormack Medal as world's top male amateur golfer

Jackson Koivun, who's set to begin his third season at Auburn this fall after making it to the Round of 32 of the 2025 U.S. Amateur, has been named winner of the Mark H. McCormack medal, the United States Golf Association and R&A announced Wednesday. The McCormack medal is given to the leading male player in the 2025 World Amateur Golf Ranking. Luke Clanton won the award last year. Koivun receives exemptions into the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills and the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in England, provided he remains amateur. 'It's a huge honor to win this award. I'm very grateful to everyone who has helped me and it's a dream come true. It's a medal every amateur golfer strives for," Koivun said in a release. 'It's in the back of everyone's head and you just try and fight and keeping playing well. To be able to say I'm a McCormack Medal winner is just really, really cool.' Koivun has had a dominant first two seasons at Auburn. He has won consecutive SEC medalist honors at the conference championship, and after his freshman season, he was named winner of the Fred Haskins Award, Ben Hogan Award, Jack Nicklaus Award and Phil Mickelson Award while helping the Tigers win their first national championship in school history. This summer, he had three consecutive top-11 finishes on the PGA Tour and will represent the United States on the Walker Cup team at Cypress Point in September. 'Jackson has shown that he is a force in the amateur game and we're proud to see him accept this honour and reap the benefits of all that comes with it,' John Bodenhamer, Chief Championships Officer at the USGA, said in a release. 'All of us at the USGA look forward to watching him compete at Cypress Point in a few weeks and know he'll be a presence in our championships for years to come.'
