Braves' AJ Smith-Shawver diagnosed with torn UCL in rotation crusher
The Braves' starting rotation took a major hit Friday.
Atlanta rookie right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver suffered a torn UCL during his start on Thursday and is expected to miss the rest of the season and most of 2026, according to USA Today.
MLB.com reported that the team and Smith-Shawver are still deciding if he'll undergo Tommy John surgery or an internal brace procedure.

Smith-Shawver, 22, reportedly heard his throwing arm pop shortly after getting hit on the foot by Phillies infielder Bryson Stott's line-drive comebacker.
He would stay in the game to face Trea Turner but looked noticeably uncomfortable throughout the at-bat before exiting after retiring him on a fly ball to left field.

After the game, Braves manager Brian Snitker admitted, 'It doesn't look good.'
'I don't think it had anything to do with [the line drive],' Snitker told reporters. 'I think it's just a byproduct of his velocity. It's been very, very good. I think it was just something that was destined to happen.'
The hard-throwing 22-year-old has been solid for the Braves this season, going 3-2 in nine starts with a 3.86 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 44 ⅓ innings.

'It stinks,' Braves catcher Sean Murphy said after the game. 'He's been throwing the ball well.'
Smith-Shawver has been one of the top pitching prospects in Atlanta's system in recent years after being drafted in the seventh round out of Colleyville Heritage High School (Texas) in 2021.
The injury is a major loss for the Braves, who are a disappointing 26-29, 9 ½ games back of the Phillies in the National League East before heading into their weekend series against the Red Sox.

Like New York, Philadelphia also looks like a solid contender for a postseason berth. The Phillies are 36-23 on the campaign, and sit in second currently in the National League East. The club is just one and a half games behind the New York Mets, heading into Tuesday's action.

Mason Howell, 17-year-old high school junior, earns spot in 2025 US Open after remarkable qualifier
Mason Howell has one year left of high school, but he will be able to tell his classmates he played in the U.S. Open before he walks at graduation. The 17-year-old Georgia high school junior qualified for the 2025 U.S. Open at Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta on Monday after shooting an impressive 18-under-par through two rounds. He is also one of the highest-ranked junior golfers in the country, coming in at No. 8 on the American Junior Golf Association list. However, his feat was remarkable considering he was the 496th-ranked amateur going into Monday's qualifier. "That was one of the greatest moments of my life," Howell said after his two rounds. "Golf's Longest Day" is what the amateur qualifier is called, as golfers must play two full rounds to determine who will participate in the 125th edition of the major tournament, which will be held at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania this year. It was certainly a grueling day, but Howell breezed through his 36 holes without putting a bogey on the scorecard, shooting 63 in both of his rounds to earn his spot in the U.S. Open field. Howell finished tied for first with Jackson Buchanan, a 22-year-old University of Illinois golfer, who also qualified for the tournament. But there weren't just amateurs in the qualifying field. The 2007 Masters winner, Zach Johnson, was among PGA Tour veterans trying to get into the field as well. Only the top-five finishers on the leaderboard can get into Oakmont, and Howell now has tons of momentum heading into the tournament next week. Howell hails from Thomasville, Georgia, where he stars for the Brookwood High School boy's golf team, which won the program's fourth state title in the last five years last month. Despite still having one more year of school left before graduation, he has already committed to remain in-state for the next chapter of his golf career and play for the Georgia Bulldogs.
