Roy Ayers, Everybody Loves the Sunshine singer and jazz-funk pioneer, dies at 84

BBC News06-03-2025
Influential soul, jazz and funk producer and composer Roy Ayers has died at the age of 84.In a statement posted on Facebook, his family said: "It is with great sadness that the family of legendary vibraphonist, composer, and producer Roy Ayers announce his passing which occurred on March 4 2025 in New York City after a long illness."They described him as "highly influential and sought after as a music collaborator."Ayers' own biggest hit was the mellow track Everybody Loves the Sunshine, which was covered by artists like d'Angelo and sampled by others including Mary J Blige and Tyler, the Creator.
But he was so much more than his best-known record. A pioneer of nu-soul and jazz funk, he was a key figure in the 90s acid jazz movement. Happy and Blurred Lines singer Pharrell Williams has described him as one of his greatest musical inspirations. Ayers had a huge influence on many RnB and hip-hop stars, particularly in the 90s, with artists like Tribe Called Quest, Mary J Blige and Jill Scott sampling his earlier work on tracks like Bonita Applebaum, My Life and Watching Me.He also worked with Guru and The Roots. Erykah Badu called him "the king of neo soul".More recently, Calvin Harris told BBC Radio 2 that Ayers "just stood out, his music is amazing and just so intricate... everything just sounds so rich and warm". Ayers performed at Glastonbury several times; his last performance there was in 2019.He also wrote and produced the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film Coffy starring Pam Grier.Ayers could play several instruments, including the flute and trumpet but he became synonymous with the vibraphone, a percussion instrument that looks similar to a xylophone but has a set of metal bars rather than wood. His other hits include Running Away and Searchin', with his band Roy Ayers Ubiquity, who were also behind Everybody Loves the Sunshine.
Musical family
Roy Edward Ayers Jr was born into a musical family in Los Angeles on 10 September 1940. His mum Ruby was a school teacher and piano teacher, while his dad, Roy Sr, was a parking attendant and trombonist.Ayers began playing the piano at the age of five and went on to play several instruments and sing in the church choir before plumping for the vibraphone.Jazz star Lionel Hampton may have had something to do with that. Ayers attended a Lionel Hampton Big Band concert when he was just five. Quite taken by Ayers's enthusiasm and delight at the performance, Hampton gifted the youngster a pair of vibe mallets. Ayers formed his first group while at Jefferson High School, aptly named the Jefferson Combo, and later studied advanced music theory at college. He became a professional musician in 1961.He went on to record three albums with jazz flautist Herbie Mann before forming Roy Ayers Ubiquity and landing the hit Everybody Loves the Sunshine in 1976, from the album of the same name. His last solo album, Mahogany Vibes, featuring Badu, came out in 2004.Ayers is survived by his wife Argerie, and their children Mtume and Ayana Ayers. The Facebook post on Ayers's page added: "His family ask that you respect their privacy at this time, a celebration of Roy's life will be forthcoming."

King releases royal dog biscuits

The King has released a range of royal dog biscuits. The treats are made using wholemeal flour, egg and chicken stock, and baked in the kitchens at Balmoral Castle, the King's home in the Highlands. The castle's website says of the product, which is part of the Balmoral Pet Collection and sells for £5: 'These 100 per cent natural biscuits, hand-baked in the Balmoral Castle kitchens, have been lovingly made in small batches for your four-legged prince or princess.' A Facebook post adds: 'Each bag contains 75g of wholesome goodness your dog will love.' Also on sale is a Balmoral tweed dog collar for £32, a tweed dog lead for £40, a tweed dog treat bag for £30, and a coat of arms dog bowl at £28. Meanwhile, the King has also launched a tweed coat for dogs, which is available through the Sandringham estate shop. The 'Happy Hound' coats, made exclusively for the shop at the King's Norfolk home, also reflect Charles's penchant for tweed. A description of the coat, which is listed online at £44.99, reads: 'Stylish, machine washable and with a water layer, the Sandringham tweed dog coat is perfect for frosty winter walks.' The monarch, a noted dog lover, was given a Lagotto Romagnolo – a specialist truffle-hunting dog from Italy – this year. The dog, which he has named Snuff is the first dog he has owned personally in around two decades. The King previously had a Jack Russell called Tigga, which he adopted shortly after starting a family with Diana, Princess of Wales, and which died in 2002, aged 18. Meanwhile, Queen Camilla recently adopted a new rescue puppy named Moley. The dog, from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, was adopted in May after the death of Beth, one of the Queen's beloved rescue terriers. Camilla adopted Beth in 2011, along with a second terrier, Bluebell, in 2012, from the same charity, of which she is patron. In a statement in November when Beth died, Buckingham Palace said: 'A sad farewell to Beth, The Queen's much-loved companion from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home who brought such joy, whether on walkies, helping on official duties, or curled up by the fire.'

Happy Gilmore with his family in Happy Gilmore 2 | Scott Yamano/ Netflix The long-awaited sequel to Adam Sandler's 1996 classic Happy Gilmore finally arrived on Friday (July 25). It marked the end of a nearly 30 year wait, and fans have been eagerly tuning in, sending it to the top of the chats on Netflix. It was also the number one film globally on Netflix. Being such an instant success, you might be wondering if Happy will return to the golf course once more. The film doesn't exactly end on a cliff-hanger - but with Happy earning enough to send his daughter to ballet school in Europe, there are a few storytelling avenues open. Tim Herlihy, who penned both Happy Gilmore and Happy Gilmore 2, delivered a disappointing update on a potential threequel in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter . He said: 'Not between me and Adam. I can say we haven't had one discussion about it. 'I haven't even thought about it in the privacy of my own brain. I'm sure some people in the world are talking about it. Never say never, I guess. We said we'd never do Happy Gilmore 2, and it's currently streaming on Netflix, so you never know.' I feel like whatever I come up with right now is going to be, not it, homie.' So chalk the chances of a Happy Gilmore 3 to unlikely, as of right now at least. What is Adam Sandler's next film? It might be unlikely at this very moment that we will get a Happy Gilmore 3, but Adam Sandler will be back in a new movie before the year is out. George Clooney and Laura Dern are also slated to have key roles in the movie - and it will premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
