
Nintendo wants to keep ‘traditional approach' to development as costs skyrocket
In response to a question during a recent shareholders meeting about the increased costs of making games for its new console, Nintendo president Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa admitted that 'recent game software development has become larger in scale and longer in duration, resulting in higher development costs. The game business has always been a high-risk business, and we recognize that rising development costs are increasing that risk.'
However, he said that Nintendo's development teams are 'currently devising various ways to maintain our traditional approach to creating games amidst the increasing scale and length of development. We believe it is important to make the necessary investments for more efficient development.'

The early lineup of first-party Switch 2 games has already shown Nintendo being more ambitious with its franchises on the enhanced hardware. Mario Kart World introduced an open-world structure to the long-running racing series, while the upcoming Donkey Kong Bananza adds an impressive destructive element to a more traditional 3D platforming experience. This has come with increased costs for consumers; World sells for $79.99, $10 more than most Nintendo games, while the Switch 2 itself is $449.99, a $100 jump over the Switch OLED. (In response to a question about these prices making it harder to reach younger audiences, Furukawa said that 'we are closely monitoring to what degree the price of the system might become a barrier.')
Of course, Nintendo is not alone, and the increased scale of game development has been disastrous for many of its competitors. Just last week Microsoft's gaming division was hit hard by layoffs and game cancellations, while high-profile games like Black Panther and Concord were both shut down alongside their development studios. Nintendo has been one of the rare exceptions in the floundering game industry, but keeping that up will become increasingly challenging as games get bigger. Then again, Furukawa offered one concrete way of combatting this: more smaller games.
'We also believe it is possible to develop game software with shorter development periods that still offer consumers a sense of novelty,' Furukawa said. 'We see this as one potential solution to the concern aboutrising development costs and software prices, and we will explore it from various angles within thecompany.'

This week in EV tech: Hyundai's 641-hp pebble
The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N tried to win over driving enthusiasts with simulated gear shifts, a combustion-car soundtrack, and of course lots of power — and it succeeded. So it was only a matter of time before Hyundai applied the same tricks to the Ioniq 6 sedan with which the Ioniq 5 shares a platform. Few cars look as futuristic as the pebble-shaped Hyundai Ioniq 6, and it wears its N garb well. A larger rear spoiler and a front splitter help generate downforce to stick the car to the pavement without interfering with Ioniq 6's low-drag shape, Hyundai claims. Subtly widened fenders make room for wider performance tires. Recommended Videos The Ioniq 6 N's dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain generates 600 horsepower in its default mode, or 641 hp in 10-second intervals with the N Grin Boost feature. With launch control engaged, the N will reach 62 mph from a standstill in 3.2 seconds, according to Hyundai, and reach a top speed of 159 mph. To ensure that performance is available consistently, the 84-kilowatt-hour battery pack has a more robust cooling system and N-specific thermal management logic. There are plenty of fast EVs, but what sets Hyundai's N models apart is their theatrics. A common criticism of EVs is that their lack of engine sounds and the need to shift gears makes them less fun, so Hyundai simply threw them in with N Active Sound+ and N e-Shift, respectively. There's also an N Drift Optimizer that lets the Ioniq 6 N slide around like a rear-wheel drive car. Performance records fall again The Ioniq 6 N aims to be both fun and fast, but the bar for absolute EV performance is much higher. The Rimac Nevera R just broke 24 world speed records, including 23 set by the standard Nevera in 2023. But Rimac is most proud of its new 0-249-0 mph record, which it reclaimed from the Koenigsegg Regera plug-in hybrid with a 25.7-second time that's 2.0 seconds quicker than the Swedish supercar's and 4.1 seconds quicker than the original Nevera. With 2,107 hp generated by four electric motors, the Nevera R also recorded a zero to 60 mph time of just 1.6 seconds and ran the quarter mile in 7.9 seconds — both slight improvements over the already-unfathomable performance of the Nevera. The R also reached a top speed of 268.2 mph, besting the standard Nevera's 256 mph top speed and setting a new record for production EVs. The Nevera R gets a relatively small 193-hp boost over the standard car, along with what Rimac calls 'a comprehensive re-engineering of all major components.' That resulted in 15% more downforce from the fixed rear spoiler and enlarged diffuser, plus a 10% improvement in overall aerodynamic efficiency. New Michelin Cup 2 tires, and a revised torque-vectoring system designed to work with them, increase lateral grip by 5% and reduce understeer — the sensation of the car ploughing on rather than turning due to lack of front-end grip — by 10%, the company claims. BMW uses AI to look for battery defects An EV can't go anywhere without a functioning battery pack, though, so as it gears up for mass production of its next-generation Neue Klasse EVs, BMW is giving its battery-manufacturing process an overhaul. 'For production of our high-voltage batteries, we are pursuing a consistent zero-defect approach,' Markus Fallböhmer, BMW's head of battery production, said in a statement. 'Highly intelligent, AI-supported quality checks are integrated into the production process to help us achieve this.' BMW assembles its battery packs from cells sourced from third-party suppliers. It starts by 'clustering' those cells with insulation and coolant. The clusters of cells are then welded together, along with electrical contacts, encased in foam, and placed in a housing that's sealed and riveted. A control unit BMW calls the 'Energy Master' is then attached, final sealing adhesive applied, and the entire pack tested. This process was developed at three German pilot plants, but BMW plans for series production at five sites globally, including one in Woodruff, South Carolina, near its vehicle assembly plant in Spartanburg. They'll supply batteries for the Neue Klasse family of EVs, starting with the BMW iX3 SUV, volume production of which is scheduled to start in Hungary later this year.

With that fast update, you can expect Apple to keep the iPhone 17e in line with the hardware launched inside the rest of the iPhone 17 family, which will no doubt include the Apple Silicon A19 chipset. Here's the stock-market playbook for the August 1 tariff deadline
President Donald Trump this week committed to a deadline of August 1 for tariffs to kick in. The uncertainty posed by weeks of negotiations has sparked volatility in markets. BI spoke with market experts to hear what they're bullish and bearish on ahead of "T-Day." Investors waited anxiously for the July 9 tariff deadline only to be met with a new date of August 1, and while the window for negotiations has been pushed out, tariffs are likely still coming. President Donald Trump committed to the new date this week, stating that no new extensions would be granted. His updates included a barrage of tariff letters to more than 20 countries, with threats of 25% tariffs on Japan and South Korea, 50% on Brazil, and 35% on Canada. Even as investors hope that the TACO trade will save them again, market pros told Business Insider this week that there are ways to position for the coming deadline. Here's what they're bullish and bearish on as the market barrels toward the August 1 "T-Day." Tariffs are aimed at benefiting companies that manufacture in the US. While it's not certain to what extent factory jobs will return, there are some existing domestic industries with positive exposure to the trade war. Trump's 50% tariff on all copper imports announced this week, for instance, should point investors toward some specific areas of the market. Henry Yoshida, CEO of Rocket Dollar, told Business Insider that he sees positive tailwinds for US copper producers, specifically Freeport-McMoRan and Souther Copper Corporation, two companies recently named by Morgan Stanley as likely winners. "These companies, which specialize in copper, would benefit from increased pricing power as tariffs would make copper imports more expensive," he stated. Apart from Copper, Yoshida added that he sees growth ahead for tech companies that build semiconductors in the US. That industry is also set to benefit from the recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which includes a valuable tax credit for chipmakers. "Chipmakers that predominantly have US-based manufacturing, such as Texas Instruments and Intel, could see upside gains as tariffs may shift demand to domestic suppliers." Julia Khandoshko, CEO of financial planning firm Mind Money, issued a similar perspective. "In the short term," she said, "semiconductor companies like Intel and Nvidia could come out ahead, since the US will likely push harder for domestic chip production." Mark Malek, Chief Investment Officer at Siebert Financial, recently said that while much remains uncertain about tariffs, some sectors are particularly exposed to risks from the trade war. "From a sector perspective, the most exposed are Consumer Discretionary and Technology, which are sectors deeply reliant on global manufacturing. Further downstream, mass retailers, which depend heavily on low-cost imports, face pricing challenges and potential margin compression." Other experts see high exposure to China as dangerous for companies, particularly as the top US trade partner has promised to retaliate if Trump takes further action against it. From Yoshida's perspective, scaling back on big tech investments makes the most sense. However, he took a different stance on Nvidia than Khandoshko, citing its high exposure to the Chinese supply chain. Along with Apple and Qualcomm, he named Nvidia as a stock investors should consider selling before August 1. He added, though, that he also sees both Tesla and General Motors as being highly vulnerable to the tariff impact, signaling a potential blow to the broader auto market. "GM sells more cars in China than in the US, and both companies rely heavily on China-based production facilities and parts sourcing," he stated. "In retail, Nike faces particular vulnerability, with over 40% of its manufacturing occurring in China." Tom Bruni, Editor-in-Chief and VP of Community of Stocktwits, expressed a similar take, highlighting the risk for companies with heavy dependence on global supply chains, specifically strong links to China."Apple's heavy manufacturing presence in China, Tesla's reliance on Chinese battery cells/materials, and Walmart's importing large volumes from affected countries are three of the most prominent examples of companies caught in the crosshairs," he said. Bruni added that in his view, Apple is the bellwether for how the rest of the market reacts to tariff-driven China trade disruptions. "[Apple] has by far the most manufacturing risk," he stated. "How leadership navigates these tariffs and the overall geopolitical environment will set the tone for the rest of the market."
