Ohio State's Will Howard seemingly wills Steelers into drafting him
Will Howard fell a bit further than some might have expected in the 2025 NFL Draft, but the former Ohio State quarterback might have manifested his landing spot before the Pittsburgh Steelers took him in the sixth round.
In a clip shared by the NFL previewing the next episode of "Hey Rookie: Welcome to the NFL," Howard pleaded for the Steelers to select him as he watched the final rounds of the draft with family and friends.
"Please pick me, please," Howard said in the clip. "Please pick me, Pittsburgh."
The next shot of the edited clip shows Howard getting a phone call from the Steelers, informing him that Pittsburgh is drafting him with the 185th overall pick.
"Are you ready to be a Steeler?" an unidentified member of the Steelers' organization asked Howard.
"F-----g right, man," Howard said with a grin as he slapped the tabletop next to him in excitement. "Let's go!"
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin eventually took the phone to chat with Howard.
"I'm doing great, coach," Howard replied when Tomlin asked how he was doing. "How are you?"
"Hey, man. Congratulations, man, to you," Tomlin told Howard. "You deserve it, man. To your family, you guys enjoy it today."
Howard, who grew up in the Philadelphia suburb of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, told Tomlin that his family was set to change their NFL allegiance.
"All Eagles fans, but now they're gonna be some damn Steelers fans in this world," Howard said with a laugh while his family applauded around him.
When the pick was officially announced on the broadcast of the draft, Howard got emotional. He teared up as he hugged his mother, Maureen. A few moments later, he and the rest of his family ran to the backyard and jumped into their pool in excitement.
As Howard's football career brings him back to Pennsylvania, he had moved closer to home this past college football season. He transferred from Kansas State to Ohio State ahead of the 2024 season, a move that paid major dividends. He led Ohio State to a national championship, standing out in all four of its College Football Playoff wins. He threw for 1,150 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions in the postseason, finishing the year with 4,010 passing yards, 42 total touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Prior to joining Ohio State, Howard started 27 games at Kansas State. He was named second-team All-Big 12 in 2023 before being named third-team All-Big Ten in 2024 and eventually won Offensive MVP of the national championship game this past season.
FOX Sports NFL Draft expert Rob Rang ranked Howard as his No. 101 top prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft, giving the Steelers a "B" grade for their draft haul as he liked Pittsburgh's selection of the former Ohio State quarterback. Howard figures to be a part of the Steelers' quarterback room this upcoming season as Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson (who Howard backed up at Kansas State) are the only other quarterbacks on Pittsburgh's roster as of Tuesday. The Steelers have still been strongly linked to free agent Aaron Rodgers.
Howard will also reunite with former Ohio State Jack Sawyer in Pittsburgh. The Steelers took Sawyer in the fifth round of the draft.

This offseason, the San Francisco 49ers made a few changes at wide receiver, dealing Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders, signing Demarcus Robinson in free agency and allowing Chris Conley to sit on the market unsigned. On top of those moves, San Francisco placed Trent Taylor on injured reserve, ending his season, and they'll likely be without Brandon Aiyuk to start the year after he suffered a torn ACL in the team's Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024. While there are plenty of options in San Francisco's wide receiver room, rookie wideout Jordan Watkins could be the man for the job. Watkins, 23, was a three-star recruit out of Butler Traditional High School in Louisville, Kentucky, before committing to Louisville in 2019. Over his two years with the Cardinals, he caught 43 passes for 586 yards and four touchdowns. However, in 2022, Watkins transferred to Ole Miss and appeared in 38 games over his final three seasons, recording 142 receptions for 2,096 yards and 14 touchdowns. Now, after San Francisco used a fourth-round pick on him, Watkins is impressing his position coach, Leonard Hankerson, who had a five-year NFL career of his own as a wide receiver. Advertisement "He has the speed to win at the first level," Hankerson said. "He's able to take the top off the defense and get downfield. On top of that, he has great hands. Just his mentality after the catch, he's always trying to score, which we pride ourselves on, guys who can run with the ball in their hands. He has done that. He's still raw, but he has that "it" factor, that speed that we could use. I'm excited about having him here. He's taking a step in the right direction and I'm excited to see where he can get to." Just because Hankerson likes what he see, that doesn't mean Watkins is a complete player. "[Route-running] that's an area where he still has to improve," Hankerson said. "Getting out of the cuts a little bit quicker. With speed guys, because they're moving at a faster pace, it takes them a little bit of time to get in and out of breaks. We're always talking about speed. As long as I can get out of the cut faster than the defender, it doesn't matter how long it takes me. But we want that speed and he has that." In an ideal world Watkins starts the season off a San Francisco's fourth or fifth receiver on the depth chart, but he may be given more opportunities throughout training camp and into the preseason. If he makes the most of them, he could earn himself a larger role in his rookie season. 49ers center earns amazing compliment from his position coach
The San Francisco 49ers had a rough season in 2024, finishing with in fourth place in the NFC West with a 6-11 record. Their .353 winning percentage was their worst since 2018 when they went 4-12 (.250), which somehow still wasn't bad enough to land in last in the division. While not much went right for the 49ers last year, they did get some great player up front, especially from center Jake Brendel. The former UCLA Bruin, who originally joined the team back in 2020 but opted out to COVID-19, entered his third season as the starting center and had a great year. Advertisement Pro Football Focus gave him a 65.0 overall grade, ranking him 23rd out of 64 qualified centers. He also earned a 71.6 run-blocking grade (13th) and a 55.1 pass-blocking grade (51st). However, when it comes to the grades from 49ers offensive line coach Chris Foerster, Brendel was the best of the best. 'Fewest amount of missed assignments," Foerster said. "His pass protection was the highest grade, his run blocking grade, pass blocking grade, and his mental errors were the best they've been since he's been here. They've been better than any center that we've had playing here up to this point.' Since Kyle Shanahan took over as the team's head coach, the 49ers have had Brendel, Weston Richburg and Alex Mack as their primary starting centers, and in Foerster's mind, this past season was the best yet. According to SIS Data Hub, Brendel had just six blown blocks, which was the fewest of any 49ers offensive lineman in 2024. Advertisement Foerster took some issue with the center's PFF grade, saying that they're grading without context. "It's interesting how he's rated outside of the 32 centers by whatever the grading system is. But I'm not knocking it, because my point is that everybody looks at something different," Foerster told 49ers writer Jake Hutchinson. "So you can knock what I look at and say, 'Oh, you don't know what you're talking about.' That's fine. I know what we asked him to do on every given play and what his role is, what his job is, so I can grade it." As the 49ers prepare for 2025, Brendel is set to enter his four season as the team's starting center, and if he plays the way he did down the stretch, that should be a strong base for the offense to build on to make it back to the postseason again. 49ers free agent wide receiver announces retirement after 10 seasons
Nearly three months into the new league year, the San Francisco 49ers still have multiple players from their 2024 roster who are still unsigned and looking for their next opportunity in the NFL. However, that group shrank on Saturday when wide receiver Chris Conley announced his retirement from the NFL through his agent, Jonathan Perzley (reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport). Advertisement Conley, 32, played collegiately at Georgia from 2011-14, catching 117 passes for 1,938 yards and 20 touchdowns in 49 career games. The Kansas City Chiefs took him in the third round (No. 76 overall) of the 2015 NFL draft. He spent three seasons in Kansas City, two with the Houston Texans, one with the Tennessee Titans and two in San Francisco. In his 10-year career, Conley caught 226 passes for 2,998 yards and 15 touchdowns. He spent the last two seasons with the 49ers, recording nine receptions for 145 yards in 23 games.
