Indian Diaspora Extends Warm Welcome To PM Modi In Cyprus
Last Updated:
The key issues on PM Modi's agenda include IT and innovation, defence, shipping, renewable energy, and people-to-people ties.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora in Limassol, after he arrived in Cyprus as part of his three-nation tour.
Sharing pictures where the Prime Minister was seen greeting the Indian nationals, he wrote on X, 'I thank the Indian community for the affection. India will keep working to deepen ties with Cyprus in the times to come."
Notably, this is the prime minister's first visit to Cyprus. His visit is seen as a historic moment by both Indian and Cypriot diplomatic sources.
His visit comes following the invitation by President Nicos Christodoulides. PM Modi was accompanied by a large delegation of around 100 officials.
After landing at Larnaca International Airport, the Prime Minister received a heartfelt welcome by the Cyprus President.
'Landed in Cyprus. My gratitude to the President of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport. This visit will add significant momentum to India-Cyprus relations, especially in areas like trade, investment and more," PM Modi said in a post on X.
During his visit, PM Modi is scheduled to hold delegation-level talks with Christodoulides.
Both leaders are also likely to share perspectives on global and regional matters, including maritime security and the situation in West Asia.
Ahead of his arrival, the Indian diaspora in Cyprus was brimming with excitement at PM Modi's much-anticipated visit.
India and Cyprus have shared close diplomatic ties since 1962, the year formal relations were established. Over the decades, Cyprus has 'consistently supported India's position on Kashmir and other key issues at international platforms, including the United Nations."
Besides his official engagements, Prime Minister Modi is also likely to meet and address the Indian community in Cyprus. While relatively small in size, the diaspora has a significant presence across sectors such as healthcare, education, and business.

Today in Politics: PM Modi in Canada for G7 Summit; govt panel to meet on Ahmedabad plane crash
In the second leg of his three-nation tour that began on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to travel to Kananaskis in Canada on June 16-17 to participate in the G7 Summit at the invitation of Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney. This would be the PM's sixth consecutive participation in the G7 Summit. Modi is attending the summit following a visit to Cyprus. He will visit Croatia on June 18 after the summit. 'At the Summit, the PM will exchange views with the leaders of G7 countries, other invited outreach countries and heads of international organisations on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and quantum-related issues,' the Ministry of External Affairs said. The PM will also hold several bilaterals on the sidelines of the summit. The Group of Seven (G7) consists of seven of the world's advanced economies – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the US, and the UK – and the European Union. Govt panel to meet on A-I crash A high-level multi-disciplinary panel, chaired by the home secretary, will hold a meeting on Monday to examine the Ahmedabad plane crash, and the committee is expected to submit its report in three months. Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, operating a flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed soon after the take-off on Thursday afternoon. Out of the 242 people on board the plane, only one person survived. 'Decoding the black box is going to give in-depth insight into what happened moments before the plane crash,' Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said. 'Any theory going around the plane crash will be analysed,' he added. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is probing the crash. In Gujarat, meanwhile, a statewide day of mourning is being observed on Monday as a mark of respect for former state Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was killed in the crash. Rupani's mortal remains will be handed over to his family members on Monday morning. Telangana ACB summons KTR in Formula E case The Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) served a notice to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K T Rama Rao, whose father K Chandrasekhar Rao is a former CM, to appear before it on Monday as part of its ongoing inquiry in the Formula E race case. Rama Rao, also known as KTR, has said he will appear before the ACB and fully cooperate with its officials. KTR had earlier called the action as 'political vendetta' against him and lashed out at Congress CM A Revanth Reddy. The ACB had registered a case against KTR over alleged payments, most of them in foreign currency without approvals, for conducting the Formula E race in Hyderabad in February 2023 during the previous BRS government. Though the race was supposed to be held in February 2024 as well, it was cancelled after the Congress government assumed office in December 2023. Parties' protests in Maharashtra, Karnataka In Maharashtra, the Congress is set to hold protests on Monday over its allegations of 'vote theft' in the 2024 Assembly elections, which saw the BJP-led Mahayuti return to power with a comfortable majority. The Congress lined up the protest programme following allegations raised by Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. In Karnataka, the BJP is holding statewide protests against the state Congress government over the June 4 stampede during the RCB's IPL victory celebrations in Bengaluru. The party is holding CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar 'directly responsible' for the deaths of 11 people. Protests will be held in all Assembly constituencies, said state BJP President B Y Vijayendra, adding that protests will continue until Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar resign. – With PTI inputs
