Korea's leading auto, electronics giants expand partnership with series of collaboration announcements
Kia has partnered with Samsung Electronics to advance the digital experience of the former's Platform Beyond Vehicle, or PBV, offerings by integrating the latter's internet of things, or IoT, solutions into the Kia PBVs, the automaker said Thursday.
According to Kia, the two signed a memorandum of understanding during Kia's 2025 EV Day held in Tarragona, Spain, on Monday to mark the latest collaboration announcement between Korea's two leading conglomerates -- Hyundai Motor Group and Samsung Group -- after they consecutively unveiled a series of plans to work together in robot-dedicated batteries and smart factories earlier this week.
Under the agreement, Samsung's business-to-business IoT platform -- SmartThings Pro -- will be applied to Kia PBVs to enable automated connectivity with business spaces. This solution is expected to help business customers integrate and manage IoT-enabled appliances without complex installations, allowing users to set up certain routines based on the destination entered into the vehicle's infotainment system.
For example, if a bakery owner were to set a wholesale market as her destination in a Kia PBV, the pre-programmed routine would automatically activate an ingredient purchase mode so that the car's internal cooling system makes sure the purchased food stays fresh during the drive.
After visiting the market, the bakery owner could set her own store as the next destination in the PBV to activate a commute mode that turns on the air conditioning, signage and other equipment in the store while producing a to-do list as the system checks the inventory.
While on the road after business hours, the bakery owner could also activate a closing mode that ensures devices in the shop are turned off, energy-saving measures are applied and security features are engaged. The system sends real-time notifications to the PBV if unusual activities or system malfunctions are detected.
A guesthouse owner, meanwhile, could activate an unmanned operation mode that enables remote check-in and check-out, unlocks room doors for visitors and controls electronic devices.
'Kia PBVs are designed to be more than just vehicles -- they are intelligent business solutions that connect seamlessly with digital ecosystems,' said Kim Sang-dae, head of Kia's PBV Division.
"We anticipate that our business collaboration with Samsung, leveraging its AI B2B solution SmartThings Pro, will extend the vehicle user experience for our business customers beyond PBVs into the broader IoT ecosystem. This partnership is expected to create new opportunities to bring value to the customer."
On top of the examples already mentioned, the collaboration between Kia and Samsung is expected to yield other IoT solutions specifically customized to the needs of PBV drivers across a range of industries in global markets.
"By integrating SmartThings Pro into Kia PBVs, we plan to present an intelligent new way for businesses to connect to their customers," said Park Chan-woo, executive vice president of the B2B Integrated Offering Center at Samsung Electronics.
"We will provide an optimized, integrated store management experience based on customized solutions to cater to a range of B2B customers, including the self-employed and small business owners."

Trade minister meets Japanese envoy, US legislators over economic cooperation

Korea's trade minister met with the Japanese ambassador to South Korea on Thursday and discussed ways to strengthen the countries' economic partnership amid growing uncertainties in the global trade environment, officials said. Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo met with Amb. Koichi Mizushima in Seoul earlier in the day, as President Lee Jae Myung prepares to visit Japan to hold his first summit talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba next Saturday. Yeo highlighted the importance of strengthening practical economic cooperation between the two countries, as South Korea and Japan mark 60 years since the normalization of diplomatic relations. The minister also proposed working together to stabilize supply chains and solve trade-related issues in areas such as artificial intelligence and climate change. Further, Yeo proposed fostering communication between the two countries' overseas missions and trade promotion agencies to ensure the successful hosting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, summit, set to be held in South Korea, and the Osaka Kansai Expo in Japan this year. Separately, Yeo held a meeting with visiting US Rep. Richard McCormick and Rep. Beth Van Duyne, seeking to secure a stable trade environment. The meeting focused on bolstering economic cooperation as uncertainties linger after a recent tariff agreement between Seoul and Washington. The minister asked for their support, indicating the significant South Korean investments in their home states, spanning chips, energy and automobiles. Noting that "many areas still need negotiating between interested parties," Yeo asked them to pay extra attention to "creating a stable environment for Korean companies to trade and invest," according to the ministry. Korean tycoons to join Lee for Trump summit

South Korea's top conglomerate leaders will join President Lee Jae Myung on a US visit next week for his summit with US President Donald Trump, aiming to promote major investments in strategic sectors including semiconductors, batteries, automobiles and shipbuilding, according to industry sources Thursday. The Aug. 24-26 trip will feature four chaebol heads — Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Chung Euisun and LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo — along with executives from leading shipbuilding, aviation and defense firms. The delegation will be tightly focused on the Aug. 25 White House summit, with the government assembling a compact, high-impact team capable of announcing significant US investments. Samsung is operating and building foundry plants worth $37 billion in Austin and Taylor, Texas, while SK hynix is investing $3.87 billion in an advanced packaging plant for its cutting-edge high bandwidth memory chips in Indiana. Hyundai's Chung met Trump in March, pledging $21 billion in new US projects, including a steel plant. LG Energy Solution is also investing about 30 trillion won ($21.7 billion) across the US, including a 7-trillion-won facility in Arizona. The four chaebol groups are expected to discuss semiconductor expansion and AI chip partnerships, as well as electric vehicle and battery production growth, and Inflation Reduction Act subsidies, during the visit. Hanwha Group Vice Chairman Kim Dong-kwan and HD Hyundai Senior Vice Chairman Chung Ki-sun, who are part of the delegation, are also expected to announce new deals as their companies are both central to the Korea-US shipbuilding cooperation initiative known as the MASGA project. Hanwha acquired Philly Shipyard last year, while HD Hyundai secured a US Navy maintenance contract. Korean Air Chairman Cho Won-tae, traveling with the delegation, recently signed $32.7 billion in supply agreements with Boeing and GE Aerospace. Ahead of the departure, the president will meet the delegation to review each company's investment pledges, tailoring the 'Korea Sales' campaign to appeal to Trump's preference for favorable reciprocal deals, sources say. "The summit agenda is expected to cover economic cooperation in manufacturing, advanced technology and key minerals, with an aim to further strengthen the bilateral economic security partnership," Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said.

Korea to invest W700b in advanced air vehicles through 2031

Korea has decided to commit 700 billion won ($506 million) to securing domestically developed advanced air vehicles, or AAV, from 2027 to 2031, the Korea AeroSpace Administration said Thursday, aiming to commercialize the aircraft for both civilian and military use. Under the five-year AAV development plan, KASA expects to conduct pilot flights in 2030, followed by demonstrations for maritime transport and public safety missions in 2031. Certification processes for military and private sector use will be carried out in parallel, ensuring the aircraft can enter commercial service immediately after demonstrations. KASA said AAVs could cut travel time between Korea's islands and the mainland to about one hour, improving mobility for island residents and supporting maritime surveillance missions against pollution and illegal fishing. The aircraft will also be tested for emergency medical transport and deliveries of urgent supplies to remote island areas, bolstering regional development efforts. As Korea has one of the world's top 15 aerospace industries, KASA pointed out that securing a homemade aircraft platform is a key factor in nurturing its aerospace sector into a high-value-added industry. On the same day, KASA held a public hearing for the five-year AAV development plan in Daejeon with about 100 stakeholders from relevant government bodies, companies, academic and research institutions as well as local governments. Expert panels at the hearing noted that Korea can enter the new AAV market with high growth potential as the country can utilize its competitiveness in manufacturing key AAV technologies such as secondary batteries and semiconductors. According to Morgan Stanley, AAVs and related service markets are projected to reach $1 trillion by 2040. With features such as low noise, eco-friendliness and vertical takeoff and landing, AAVs are considered the future of mobility as they can quickly transport passengers and goods in the air within cities and between regions. 'Because the AAV market will undergo drastic change, integrating a range of technological sectors and impacting our daily lives in the future, it is important that the industry and government join hands to swiftly pursue the project and secure the lead in the market,' said Kim Hyun-dae, director general of KASA's Aeronautics Innovation Mission Directorate.
