Vietnam jails 30 people for graft worth US$45 million

(AFP pic) HANOI: A court in Vietnam today jailed 30 people including several former senior officials over graft that cost the state US$45 million, with one ex-official convicted of taking suitcases stuffed with cash bribes. The communist nation's crackdown on corruption in recent years has seen two presidents and three deputy prime ministers deposed and top business leaders taken down. Today, state media said a Hanoi court announced verdicts for 30 former officials and 11 businessmen charged with bribery, abuse of power and violating bidding and contracting laws. Thirty of the 41 were convicted of corruption that prosecutors say caused damages worth more than 1.16 trillion dong (US$44.6 million) to the state, Public Security News said. The bribes themselves totalled far less. Prosecutors said that between 2010 and 2024, chairman of the Phuc Son Group, Nguyen Van Hau, spent over US$5 million bribing officials to win contracts in over a dozen multi-billion-dollar infrastructure projects in three provinces. Hau brought suitcases of cash to other defendants' offices or private residences for the bribes, prosecutors say. For that and other violations he was handed 30 years in prison. Former party chief of Vinh Phuc province Hoang Thi Thuy Lan was given 14 years behind bars for taking the biggest bribes – almost US$2 million in suitcases weighing up to 60kg. 'I recognise my mistakes and my crime and fully accept the indictment,' Lan told the court. 'I would like to ask the court to reduce sentences for my comrades in the most humanitarian manner,' she said. According to lawyers, Hau and his group paid over US$45 million as compensation for the damages in the case. In April, Vietnam jailed former deputy minister of industry and trade Hoang Quoc Vuong for six years after finding him guilty of 'power abuse' in a solar energy development plan. Historic Swedish church relocated to make way for expanding mine
KIRUNA: One of Sweden's most admired wooden churches, the red-painted Kiruna Kyrka, resumed its careful journey across the Arctic town on Wednesday. The 672-tonne structure is being transported to a new site to accommodate the expansion of Europe's largest underground iron ore mine. Kiruna's entire town centre is being shifted because of the vast LKAB mine that dominates the region. Decades of deeper excavation have destabilised the ground, increasing the risk of collapse in some areas. Built in 1912, the Lutheran church is regarded as a national treasure. It is being transferred five kilometres on remote-controlled flatbed trailers at a painstaking speed of 0.5 kilometres per hour. The operation began on Tuesday and is expected to finish by Wednesday afternoon. Officials said the 1,200-tonne convoy has moved without major problems, though tighter bends and narrow passages were expected to slow progress on the second day. The rare relocation has drawn national attention. Residents lined the streets of the town of 18,000, while Swedish broadcasters aired live coverage. King Carl XVI Gustaf was scheduled to take part in ceremonies marking the move. Festivities also included an attempt at a world record for the largest 'kyrkkaffe' — the traditional post-service coffee gathering. Kiruna's relocation has been under way for nearly 20 years and will continue for several more. The new town centre was officially opened in September 2022. Moving the church alone is estimated to cost 500 million kronor, entirely funded by mining company LKAB. The church was designed by Swedish architect Gustaf Wickman, standing 40 metres tall and blending several styles. Sami-inspired motifs decorate its pews, while its neo-Gothic exterior features steep roofs and symmetrical windows. Inside, national romanticism and Art Nouveau elements merge, with highlights including an ornate altarpiece and a 2,000-pipe organ. Ahead of the move, workers carefully removed its handblown glass windows, replacing them temporarily with painted plywood panels. German minister warns China's assertiveness threatens European interests
JAKARTA: China's assertiveness in the disputed South China Sea and tensions in the Taiwan Strait threaten international security and European interests, Germany's foreign minister said on Wednesday. 'What happens here in the Indo-Pacific has a direct impact on European security and vice versa,' Johann Wadephul said in a speech in Jakarta, using an alternative description for the Asia-Pacific region. 'China's growing military assertiveness in the South China Sea not only threatens Asia's security but also undermines the international rules-based order,' Wadephul said after talks with his Indonesian counterpart. 'With essential trade routes running right through this area, it also constitutes an economic risk.' He said the same applied to frictions in the Taiwan Strait, where China has deployed fighter jets, warships and coast guard ships near Taiwan and has held several major military exercises around the island in recent years. 'Any escalation would have serious consequences for global security and prosperity, and directly affect German and European interests, too,' he said. His comments are likely to cause more friction with Beijing after it lashed out at Berlin this week over his remarks in Japan, where he accused China of being 'increasingly aggressive' and trying to 'unilaterally change' regional borders. Wadephul said in a statement on Sunday before leaving for Asia that China was 'increasingly asserting its regional supremacy' and questioning principles of international law. He also said on Wednesday Russia's war in Ukraine had an impact on regional security in Asia because of Chinese and North Korean support for Moscow. 'Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine is not only an attack on the European peace order, it also affects Indo-Pacific security,' he said. 'The Russian war machine runs in part on North Korean troops and ammunition, as well as China's decisive economic support.' China insists it is a neutral party in the conflict but many of Ukraine's allies believe that Beijing has provided support to Moscow. – AFP
