Use of air horns continues unabated in Coimbatore
After a lull, use of high decibel air horns has become rampant among private buses and goods carriers in Coimbatore. Though the police claim that periodic vehicle checks are conducted to curb their use, many private buses, especially omni buses, are found to be using them.
The private bus operators allege that the State-run buses are also involved in violations.
A police officer said private bus operators were occasionally reminded to not use air horns, which caused noise pollution and distraction to other motorists.
The permitted noise range for horns was between 93 decibel and 112 decibel as per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, the official said. Lack of decibel meters, a device required to check noise level of horns, was another hurdle for the police and Transport Department.
Decibel meter, which is used by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) is held at a distance of 7.5 metres from the horn, at a height of 0.5 to 1.5 metres, to check the noise level.
Consumer rights activist K. Kathirmathiyon said consumer organisations raised the issue of air horns on city roads with the Transport Department officials at a meeting with Regional Transport Officers (RTO) held in March.
'Vehicle owners should be booked or fined if they are found using air horns, instead of merely seizing them. As no such action is being taken, there is no deterrent effect. After the issue was highlighted, the Department agreed to conduct joint drives with TNPCB,' he said.
City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar said the police would carry out surprise vehicle checks to curb use of air horns.

Transport departments warn against unauthorised use of vehicle beacons in Odisha
BHUBANESWAR : The state government has asked the Odisha Police and three other departments to issue suitable instructions to the subordinate offices under their administrative control against using beacons on their vehicles without approval. The direction came following allegations regarding use of single coloured red, amber light and multi-coloured flickering lights by field functionaries, who are not authorised to use them. Principal secretary of the Commerce and Transport department Usha Padhee said, 'There have been restrictions on use of single colour amber/red light as per the provision U/R 108 (4) of Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, relating to use of multi-coloured flickering light.' So far, the Transport Commissioner's office, authorised to issue permission, has not received any request from any department for grant of permission to use such lights on the official vehicles. 'In case the vehicles are used for the purposes as specified in the guidelines of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, then they should use the multi-coloured light with due permission in the shape of a sticker from the Transport Commissioner,' the letter to the departments stated.

Security breach at Salman Khan's Mumbai flat: Person detained after trying to enter building illegally
Mumbai Police detained a person from Chhattisgarh after he tried to unlawfully enter the residence of Bollywood actor Salman Khan at Galaxy Apartments in Bandra. The incident occurred on May 20, when the individual, identified as Jitendra Kumar Singh, first appeared at the apartment complex around 9:45 AM. Claiming to be a fan, he insisted on meeting the actor. When security personnel denied him entry, he reacted by smashing his phone on the ground. As per the Times of India, despite being turned away, Singh returned later the same day at approximately 7:15 PM. This time, he used a vehicle belonging to a resident of the building in an attempt to gain access. Upon blocking a resident's car and running towards the premises, he was stopped by the police stationed at the gate and handed over to the Bandra police. During questioning, Singh reportedly told police that he was trying to hide because security personnel were not allowing him to meet Khan. He has since been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police officials clarified that while the man did manage to get into the premises, he was intercepted before he could reach the actor's actual residence. High Security at Salman Khan's Residence Salman Khan's home has been under heightened security following a serious security threat last year. In April 2024, two individuals on a motorcycle fired four rounds outside Galaxy Apartments before fleeing the scene. In the aftermath, Khan was granted Y+ category security, reflecting the seriousness of the threat. The incident was later claimed by gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's gang through a social media post. The same group also took responsibility for the murder of Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique, who was known to be close to Khan. The enmity between the actor and the Bishnoi gang stems from the 1998 Blackbuck poaching case, as the Bishnoi community regards the animal as sacred. Multiple Threats in Recent Years This recent breach is not the only threat the actor has faced. Over the past few years, Salman Khan has received multiple death threats. Earlier this year, Mumbai's Transport Department received a WhatsApp message threatening to kill the actor by bombing his car and entering his home. A case was filed at the Worli Police Station regarding this threat, although the identity of the person behind the message remains unknown. The investigation into both incidents continues, as authorities assess the actor's security requirements in light of recurring threats. Apart form Salman, in January this year, actor Saif Ali Khan was attacked at his Mumbai residence. Police had said that the man had entered the house with the intention of robbery. The actor was rushed to Lilavati Hospital with multiple stab injuries and has since recovered.

Further investigation is underway, the police said. Salman Khan has been under a high security cover since the attack at his house last year. He was upgraded to Y+ security after the firing incident. On April 14 last year, two bike-borne men fired four rounds of gunshots at Mr Khan's Bandra residence and fled the spot. Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's gang had claimed responsibility for the firing in a Facebook post and also said it was responsible for Maharashtra Minister Baba Siddique's murder - the 66-year-old politician who was known to be close to Salman Khan. The gangster, who is in prison, has a long-standing feud with the actor and has issued him multiple threats in the past. The feud originates from the Blackbuck shooting case as the Bishnoi community considers Blackbucks sacred. Mr Khan has also received many death threats over the past years, especially after he was convicted in the 1998 Blackbuck shooting case. Earlier this year, he received a death threat through a WhatsApp message sent to Mumbai's Transport Department in Worli. In the threatening message, the accused warned to kill the actor by entering his house and blowing up his car with a bomb. A case has been filed at the Worli Police Station against an unknown person who sent the message, officials said.
