NL restaurant owners speak out in aftermath of shooting

New London — The owners of Favorites Bistro Bar would like their restaurant to be known for its Sunday brunches or Caribbean-inspired culinary delights - not a random act of violence.
Two years of work to establish themselves on Bank Street might have been dismantled on the evening of Jan. 30 when a gunman opened fire on a patron inside the restaurant. Police described the shooting as a targeted attack.
Restaurant owners Maja, 39, and Ederjson Pierre, 38, had just picked up their two young daughters and arrived at their Ledyard home when they received a phone call about the shooting. Majan said she was in tears.
Aside from the many questions about why the shooting happened and whether anyone was hurt, there was the realization the restaurant might have to close. In a business that's notoriously tough to be successful, a shooting could have been devastating and forced them out of business.
'This was a direct threat to everything we worked for. It was not a good feeling,' Majan Pierre said.
Police said the fact the shooting took place at the restaurant was happenstance. They have since arrested the alleged gunman though his motive is not known.
'It had nothing to do with us but the end result is we suffer. It is our names out there, Ederjson Pierre said.
The two former Norwich residents said that despite a stigma about New London being unsafe, there's no doubt it is a welcoming community. The two have run a successful cleaning business - True Maid Cleaning- in the city and dabbled in real estate for two decades.
Immediately after the shooting, the couple said there was unwavering support for them from the community.
Leaders from the Mystic Chamber of Commerce and Garde Arts Center were among the first to reach out, they said. There were reassurances from numerous neighboring business owners that Majan Pierre said 'reminded us of the strength and unity within our community.'
'Getting those phone calls, messages and people coming in, it all felt very good, Majan Pierre said.
The Pierres said their staff remained resilient and continued to work with passion and professionalism.
Looking ahead, the couple said they'd like to focus more on the unique food and atmosphere Favorites brings to the region. The Pierres, who are Haitian, described the food as a mix of the familiar infused with culture and island flavors. The restaurant's menu features everything from honey jerked chicken wings and oxtail rangoons to coq au vin and braised short ribs.
The restaurant, which features a Passport Dinner series and jazz nights on its waterfront patios, will debut a Saturday brunch on April 5.

Earlier this month, Laplante showed up as an detainee inside the Baker Detention Center in Macclenny, Florida, after becoming the latest immigrant arrested as part of President Donald Trump's mass crackdown against non-citizens. In a statement to the Miami Herald, an ICE spokesperson said that Laplante, who lived in Montreal before moving to Jacksonville, 'is an illegal alien from Haiti, [who] gained status in the United States fraudulently, as he was married with two women simultaneously.' 'It was determined that he is an illegally present alien who is inadmissible under the Immigration and Nationality Act who sought to procure a visa, or other documentation, allowing admission into the United States by fraud or by willfully misrepresenting a material fact,' the spokesman said. 'He has a final order of removal issued by an immigration judge on Oct. 18, 2024.' Born in Pétion-Ville, Laplante got his start working for several radio stations in Port-au-Prince before moving to Canada in 2008, according to an interview he once gave Le Nouvelliste, Haiti's oldest daily. Eventually, he moved to Jacksonville, where in 2014 he registered the now inactive, LAPLANTASHOW & ENTERTAINMENT. Known for his provocative jokes and sometimes angry posts targeting entertainers and other personalities in the Haitian sphere, Laplante once described himself as 'a sensational journalist.' In the Nouvelliste article, he said, he decide 'to become a scandal or sensationalist journalist, because I realized that our industry is virgin in this sense. Since I am someone who dares to do and say things that people are afraid to do or say, I decided to add these little spices to the business!' Protests are cropping up across the country opposing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and military presence in California. Meanwhile, some Los Angeles business owners are finding their own way to support immigrant, Latino and Hispanic communities targeted by recent federal immigration enforcement raids. SueEllen Mancini, 34, is the owner of Sad Girl Creamery, an LA-based ice cream business that offers Latin-inspired flavors like chocoflan and guava jam cheesecake. She tells CNBC Make It she's unable to protest because she is her mother's primary caretaker. "But I figured, 'OK, we can put our heads together and be able to give back, even if it's just a little bit,'" Mancini say. "And I think the biggest way I could personally give back is monetarily." On Sunday, Mancini says she will donate 20% of sales from her pop-up at downtown LA's Smorgasburg event, including all tips, to The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, or CHIRLA, an LA County-based immigrant rights group. Mancini launched Sad Girl Creamery from her home in 2021 after buying a $300 Whynter ice cream maker. She considers her venture a "microbusiness." Even so, "I think it's important to put your money where your mouth is and really give back to the people who are on the ground trying to make a difference, even if you can't personally be there," Mancini says. "It means a lot to be able to give back to the people who are going through the same situations we've gone through in the past," she says. The latest news of immigration enforcement raids is personal. When Mancini was a teenager, she says her older brother, then 18 years old, was deported. He had been born outside of the country, came to the U.S. as an infant and was unaware of his immigration status, Mancini says. "My brother was only a 1-year old [when he arrived in the U.S.], so America was literally all he knew up until his deportation," Mancini says. "This was before [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals]. My mother later had me here in the U.S., making me the only citizen [and] documented in the family for 25 years." Mancini says she and her family, including her mom and an older sister, are still paying immigration lawyer fees for her brother's return to the U.S., "and it is a painfully long process and really expensive." Mancini works alongside her mom, Maria Lupes, to run Sad Girl Creamery, which operates out of a commercial kitchen in Culver City and sells pints in stores around the metro area. "[My mom has] always been really hard-working and very independent [and] a super quick thinker," Mancini says about working with her mom. "I get everything from her, so her great working aspects and creativity definitely rubs off on me." Mancini, who grew up in Houston, says moving to LA in 2018 helped her embrace her family's roots in Uruguay and Chile. "When I visited the first time I immediately saw how Latino-focused it is, the whole community, and that made me feel close to my own culture," she told the LA Times in 2023. "That made me want to be closer to that side of myself that I had never paid attention to. ... I come from an immigrant family, I grew up that way. I share all those experiences, but I had never expressed it." Roughly 10 million people call LA County home, and some 49% identify as Hispanic or Latino, according to U.S. Census data. Mancini uses her platform around Sad Girl Creamery to raise awareness for mental health issues, too, which she says are still stigmatized in many areas of U.S. Latino culture. Many Latinos face barriers to care. As for her upcoming efforts to raise money for local immigrant groups, "I really hope that we get a lot of people to show up [and] help put more more money towards helping these people," Mancini says. "Come and enjoy ice cream that's literally inspired by these cultures." "Maybe the ice cream might make you feel a little better," Mancini adds. "Things are really scary out there, but as long as we support one another, we can get through this. We're a strong community."

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — The owner of an iconic nightclub in the Dominican Republic whose roof collapsed in April and killed 236 people was arrested Thursday along with his sister. Antonio Espaillat and Maribel Espaillat have not been charged in the case , although authorities have 48 hours to present any charges before a judge. 'Both defendants displayed immense irresponsibility and negligence by failing to physically intervene to prevent the club's roof from collapsing, as it ultimately did, causing 236 deaths and more than 180 injuries,' the Dominican Republic's Attorney General's Office said in a statement. Prosecutors accused the Espaillats of trying to intimidate or manipulate company employees, adding that they could serve as witnesses in the case. Antonio Espaillat is considered a powerful businessman in the Dominican Republic; he owns upscale entertainment centers and dozens of local radio stations. Miguel Valerio, the Espaillats' attorney, told reporters that he expects to have access to the prosecutors' evidence in upcoming days. 'This is an involuntary homicide,' he said. 'Nobody wanted that to happen.' The Espaillats were arrested after being interrogated for several hours. Altanto TV, a local digital news channel, posted an interview with a man they identified as former Jet Set employee Gregory Adamés. The channel said he gave prosecutors videos and conversations with Antonio Espaillat in which he warned that the April 7 party shouldn't be held because the roof could collapse. Adamés said in a video posted on Instagram that he would hold the Espaillat family responsible if he disappears or is shot or involved in an accident. 'If something happens to me, it's clear where it came from,' he said. 'My intention is not to hurt anyone, only that the truth be known.' A government-appointed committee that includes international experts is still investigating what caused the roof to collapse. Crews worked for 53 hours nonstop after arriving on the scene in Santo Domingo shortly after midnight on April 8, rescuing 189 survivors. The victims included beloved singer Rubby Pérez , who was performing when the roof caved in, and Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi province and sister of seven-time Major League Baseball All-Star Nelson Cruz. Also killed was former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel , who was pulled from the debris but died in hospital, and Dominican baseball player Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera. Other victims include a retired U.N. official, New York-based fashion designer Martín Polanco, an Army captain who left behind four young girls, and three employees at Grupo Popular, a financial services company, including the president of AFP Popular Bank and his wife. The relatives of several survivors have filed lawsuits against Antonio Espaillat. The club, which had operated for nearly five decades, was known for its Monday night merengue parties that attracted international celebrities and high-profile Dominicans.
