Owner of Dominican club whose roof collapsed and killed 236 is arrested along with his sister
Antonio Espaillat and Maribel Espaillat have not been charged in the case , although authorities have 48 hours to present any charges before a judge.
'Both defendants displayed immense irresponsibility and negligence by failing to physically intervene to prevent the club's roof from collapsing, as it ultimately did, causing 236 deaths and more than 180 injuries,' the Dominican Republic's Attorney General's Office said in a statement.
Prosecutors accused the Espaillats of trying to intimidate or manipulate company employees, adding that they could serve as witnesses in the case. Antonio Espaillat is considered a powerful businessman in the Dominican Republic; he owns upscale entertainment centers and dozens of local radio stations.
Miguel Valerio, the Espaillats' attorney, told reporters that he expects to have access to the prosecutors' evidence in upcoming days.
'This is an involuntary homicide,' he said. 'Nobody wanted that to happen.'
The Espaillats were arrested after being interrogated for several hours.
Altanto TV, a local digital news channel, posted an interview with a man they identified as former Jet Set employee Gregory Adamés. The channel said he gave prosecutors videos and conversations with Antonio Espaillat in which he warned that the April 7 party shouldn't be held because the roof could collapse.
Adamés said in a video posted on Instagram that he would hold the Espaillat family responsible if he disappears or is shot or involved in an accident.
'If something happens to me, it's clear where it came from,' he said. 'My intention is not to hurt anyone, only that the truth be known.'
A government-appointed committee that includes international experts is still investigating what caused the roof to collapse.
Crews worked for 53 hours nonstop after arriving on the scene in Santo Domingo shortly after midnight on April 8, rescuing 189 survivors.
The victims included beloved singer Rubby Pérez , who was performing when the roof caved in, and Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi province and sister of seven-time Major League Baseball All-Star Nelson Cruz.
Also killed was former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel , who was pulled from the debris but died in hospital, and Dominican baseball player Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera.
Other victims include a retired U.N. official, New York-based fashion designer Martín Polanco, an Army captain who left behind four young girls, and three employees at Grupo Popular, a financial services company, including the president of AFP Popular Bank and his wife.
The relatives of several survivors have filed lawsuits against Antonio Espaillat.
The club, which had operated for nearly five decades, was known for its Monday night merengue parties that attracted international celebrities and high-profile Dominicans.

Parents in western Minnesota are remembering their kids as kind, generous and an inspiration to others. In July, Brady Heiling of Clara City and his girlfriend Hallie Helgeson of Montevideo, were killed by a wrong-way drunken driver on their way back from a concert in Wisconsin. But the teenagers are continuing to give back, even in death. "He loved life. He loved everything about life from the get go," said Jen Heiling, Brady Heiling's mom. For Brady Heiling, that included football, track, and his girlfriend, Hallie Helgeson. "Brady was her protector. He was the person that probably every parent hopes that their child finds," said Alyson Helgeson, Hallie Helgeson's mom. "Just like Brady, they had hearts of gold." After graduating from MACCRAY High School, Brady Heiling turned down athletic scholarships so he could be closer to Hallie Helgeson during her senior year and attend her sporting events. "He decided, I want to build a life. I want to build a life for me and Hallie," said Jen Heiling. In July, the young couple went to Madison, Wisconsin for a concert but never made it back home. They were hit by a drunken driver going the wrong way on the interstate. Hallie Helgeson was killed instantly. Brady Heiling lived for five days after the crash before he died. "That is absolutely the worst thing any parent can ever wake up to. And when our lives stopped," said Jen Heiling. But through their grief, a silver lining has emerged. Known for giving back, both teenagers had elected to be organ donors. The hospital held an honor walk for Brady Heiling right before he died knowing that in so many ways, he and Hallie Helgeson will live on. "We know his heart went to Ohio. We know one of his corneas went international. Which was a very, very big deal," said Jen Heiling. Hallie Helgeson's organ donations have helped 75 people so far. "Helping other people was part of who she was and so for her to continue on makes me very proud to know that even in her passing, people are benefitting from her," said Alyson Helgeson. Brady Heiling's favorite place was the gym his family built on their farm. He would spend hours there working out. For the Heilings, their son's presence is still everywhere. "I was working on some trucks the other day and I came through the door, and I just lost it. I just started crying. This is everything for him," said Josh Heiling, Brady's dad. MACCRAY is retiring Brady Heiling's #11 football jersey and Montevideo is honoring Hallie Helgeson's as well. Two lives cut short, but their legacy lives on. "And I think that's one of the biggest things, I'm so proud of both of them," said Jen Heiling. "They were just making everyone better. Everyone around them was better because of them." According to Homeland Security, Noelia Saray Martinez-Avila, the 30-year-old driver who crashed into the teenagers, entered the country illegally from Honduras. She has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide and impaired driving.

Teen missing for 1 week after going on vacation in Florida found dead: Sheriff
An 18-year-old from North Carolina who had been missing for one week after vacationing with relatives in Florida has been found dead, according to officials. Giovanni Pelletier, an 18-year-old who was described as "smart, kind and full of life," disappeared early on Aug. 1 "under deeply troubling and suspicious circumstances," according to the family's GoFundMe page. Pelletier was visiting Englewood, Florida, with his mother and her fiancé and wanted to reconnect with relatives from his biological father's family, Desiree Pelletier, who is Giovanni's aunt and sister of his mother, told ABC News. While he was unable to see his father, who is incarcerated, he made plans to see three of his cousins on that side of the family, his aunt said. With only a few days left in his vacation, Pelletier's cousins picked him up at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 1 to take him on the three-hour drive to their house in Mims, Florida, his aunt said. His mother was planning on picking him up the next day, according to Desiree Pelletier. But within 25 minutes of leaving, he sent his mom a text: "Help me," his aunt said. That was the last time his mother heard from him, according to his aunt. A family member found Pelletier's body on Aug. 8 in a retention pond across the street from where his backpack and phone were located in Bradenton, Florida, his aunt confirmed to ABC News on Sunday. The teen's body was found exactly one week after he disappeared, his aunt said. After extensive forensic testing, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office confirmed to ABC News on Thursday that the body found in the pond was identified to be Pelletier. Identification of the body was confirmed through dental records, and "additional forensic testing was required due to the condition of his body," the sheriff's office said. The cause of death remains undetermined "pending toxicology results, which are expected to take several weeks," the sheriff's office said. "Detectives are actively pursuing multiple leads to learn more about the circumstances surrounding Pelletier's death. There are still no signs of foul play," the sheriff's office said. Desiree Pelletier said her sister, the teen's mother, "is broken" by the news of her son's death. The family also said they are hiring an attorney to help with the case. The teen's mother also reached out to the cousins who were with Pelletier, who said the group had been smoking marijuana, which is when the 18-year-old began to panic and pull out a knife, Pelletier's aunt noted. But his aunt said that alleged behavior "is not Gio" and that it does "not align" with who he is. The cousins also told police that Pelletier "began to act erratically before exiting the vehicle," according to a statement from the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office last week. The cousins claimed they were driving on I-75 when Pelletier got out near SR-70, authorities said. On Friday, the Brevard County Sheriff's Office said the cousins had been interviewed by officials and "continue to be fully cooperative in all aspects of the investigation." Officials also said they "took in the vehicle that the three young men were driving at the time they traveled to the West Coast of Florida."

Blackwater founder to deploy nearly 200 personnel to Haiti as gang violence soars
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The security firm of former U.S. Navy Seal Erik Prince will soon deploy nearly 200 personnel from various countries to Haiti as part of a one-year deal to quell gang violence there, a person with knowledge of the plans said Thursday. The deployment by Vectus Global is meant to help the government of Haiti recover vast swaths of territory seized in the past year and now controlled by heavily armed gangs, said the person, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the plans.
