Tawadkar defends Film City amid local opposition
Residents of Loliem, Canacona, continue to intensify their opposition to development projects on comunidade land in the area, but assembly speaker and local MLA Ramesh Tawadkar said the Film City project has potential to create employment opportunities for local youths.
The opposition to the project was evident at the Loliem gram sabha held earlier this year, which demanded immediate revocation of all permissions for the Film City project, planned across 11 lakh sqm of eco-sensitive plateau land. However, Tawadkar said that with the Loliem-Pollem comunidade having already decided to provide the required land at Bhagwati plateau to state govt for the project, an agreement was signed with the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) as part of their commitment to employment-generating initiatives.
'A project like Film City will not only create employment but also generate new opportunities for local youth in arts, technology, and the film industry,' Tawadkar said. He said that the rocky terrain, unsuitable for agricultural projects, makes it appropriate for such development.
Loliem-Polem citizens' committee member Manoj Prabhugaonkar said their signature campaign has been receiving 'great support', with five out of nine panchayat members supporting their efforts to save the plateau.
