'We will look at points after the last game'

BBC News25-04-2025

Leicester City boss Amandine Miquel refuses to be distracted by the relegation battle even though her side could secure Women's Super League safety this weekend.Leicester currently sit seven points clear of the relegation zone with three matches remaining and could secure their spot in the top flight prior to kick-off on Sunday (15:00 BST) if Crystal Palace lose to West Ham (12:30 BST) earlier in the day. "We will look at the points after the last game and hopefully, we will have enough," Miquel said."If it's not this weekend, we still have two more games for us to get a really good overall result."Leicester are hosting an injury-ravaged Manchester City, who have only won two of their past five WSL matches to leave their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread. However, Miquel is not underestimating Nick Cushing's side."Even though they have injuries, they still have a good squad and good players. We know when you have injuries, it's the moment for others to show themselves. It won't be easier than usual, it'll just be different," she said."We have focused on us. We want to be stronger defensively and make sure we keep the threats offensively."

'Good teams win when they are up against it'

Justin Devenny says Northern Ireland's gritty 1-0 win over Iceland will give the team momentum heading into September's World Cup qualifiers. Isaac Price netted the opener in the first half but the game turned when Brodie Spencer was sent off for a last-man tackle with 33 minutes to ten men of Northern Ireland dug deep and ground out a win in their final friendly before they take on Luxembourg and Germany in was only the third time a Northern Ireland team have won a game with 10 players and the first time since the 1982 World Cup against Spain."I think good teams win when they're up against it or when they've got a man sent off," said Crystal Palace's Devenny, 21."We stuck together, which I think is key to this group. The togetherness is amazing. Everyone's there for each other."Everyone's going to go above and beyond for each other. It's great to have that within a squad and I think that's what brings us up to that next level."Devenny said that the 10 men of Northern Ireland "dug deep" and that will stand by Michael O'Neill's young team come the qualifiers."It might not have been the prettiest game, but we got the result which we wanted."On the park, everyone's there talking to each other, making sure everyone's doing their jobs. "That starts from Pierce all the way up to the striker. Everyone's good at that, to be fair."Northern Ireland start their qualifying campaign in September with trips to Luxembourg and Germany, and than face Slovakia in October's window."We have got the qualifiers coming up and we're all focused on that now but I think this was an important camp to get the group together, try and build momentum because we're going to have tough games."

Jadon Sancho's preferred club tells him they are not interested in transfer

Borussia Dortmund have told Jadon Sancho they cannot offer him a route back to the club this summer. Sancho has returned to Manchester United after Chelsea opted against signing him on a permanent deal following a season on loan at Stamford Bridge, paying a £5million penalty to avoid keeping him at the club. Ruben Amorim has no plans to integrate Sancho back into the first-team at Old Trafford. The 25-year-old has one year left on his deal thought to be worth around £300,000-a-week with United desperate to offload him on a permanent basis this summer. After being banished from the squad by Erik ten Hag, Sancho returned to former club Dortmund in January 2024, showing slight glimpses of his once fearsome form as the Bundesliga side reached the Champions League final. A return to Dortmund is reportedly Sancho's preferred option – but his former side are focusing on other priorities this summer. Bayer Leverkusen have also been linked with a move for Sancho with the club searching for a replacement for Florian Wirtz who is poised to complete a record move to Liverpool. 'Of course, contact with Jadon is always there, in some way, because we have a very long history,' Dortmund's sporting director Sebastian Kehl said. 'But it's not an issue for us right now. We have other priorities at the moment, and that's why the Sancho issue was probably played up more in the media than discussed internally.' More Trending However, the appointment of ten Hag as Xabi Alonso's replacement would surely scupper those plans given the history between the Dutchman and Sancho. United will take a huge hit on the £71m they paid to side Sancho five years if they do manage to offload him this summer. A loan deal could be a more likely option with Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Tottenham named as three clubs monitoring his situation. United meanwhile are also hoping to offload Marcus Rashford and Antony. The England international is still holding out for a dream move to Barcelona while Real Betis, where Antony shone on loan last season, are not thought to be in a position to meet United's asking price for a permanent move. Arsenal dealt blow as Nico Williams responds to Bayern Munich approach

Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams has told Bayern Munich he is 'very open' to joining them this summer, according to reports in Germany. Arsenal and Chelsea have Williams on their shortlist for the summer transfer window with both Premier League clubs wanting to strengthen in wide areas. Williams was one of Spain's standout stars at Euro 2024 and finished this season with 11 goals and seven assists for Bilbao, who finished fourth in La Liga to secure a place in next season's Champions League. Bayern Munich have also entered the running to sign Williams having lost Leroy Sane, who arrived in Turkey on Wednesday ahead of his move to Galatasaray on a free transfer. According to Sky Germany, Bayern's sporting director, Max Eberl, and sporting director, Christoph Freund, have held talks with Williams' representatives. It's also claimed that Williams himself has told Bayern that he is 'very open' to joining them this summer. Bayern, however, will need to pay the €58 million (£48.1m) release clause in Williams' deal with Bilbao, as well as meet the 22-year-old's salary demands, which are understood to be in the region of €380,000 (£322,000) a week. More Trending Speaking in April, Williams gave no indication that he would push for a move away from Bilbao this summer. 'I'm super happy here and feel well,' the winger said. 'I've always wanted to feel important here.' Bilbao have also been in talks with Williams to extend his contract, which expires in the summer of 2027.
