SEOUL (Reuters) -K-pop supergroup BTS members RM and V were discharged from the South Korean military on Tuesday after mandatory service, as fans were counting down to the band's comeback with more members finishing their national duty later this month.
Cheered by dozens of fans near the military base, the two members in their army uniforms saluted the crowd and said they will soon be returning to perform.
"To all the ARMYs who have waited for us in the military, I want to say I am truly, truly grateful. Please wait just a little longer and we will return with a really cool performance," V said in front of fans and media. Known as ARMY, BTS has a global fan club with millions of loyal followers.
Two other bandmates, Jin and J-Hope, were discharged from the military earlier and have been performing solo and appearing on variety shows.
Jimin, Jung Kook and Suga are set to wrap their military service as late as June 21, media reports say.
The globally recognised K-pop icon BTS has not released a group project since 2022 and its members are hoping for the reunion.
'After pursuing our own little ventures, we are now coming back together, and I love that for us,' J-Hope told a magazine in December.
Entertainment group HYBE, which manages BTS, is planning a huge event called BTS FESTA this week for fans to celebrate the band's 12th anniversary. It is not clear whether the members will show up, but Jin attended last year.
Shares in HYBE rose 2.3% as of 0211 GMT, hitting their highest point in more than three years.
Holding a flower bouquet for their discharge from the army, RM said he wanted to perform the most.
"(Members) would feel the same, but stage performance, I want to perform the most. I'll work hard to make an album soon and come back to the stage," RM said, after playing the sax for the crowd.
Groupies from around the world flew in to South Korea to celebrate the return of their "life-changing" stars.
"It is just absolutely joyful. That is now four out, two again tomorrow and then Suga. Then we have OT7, we have seven kings back with us," said Philip Darbyshire, a 72-year-old Australian fan, referring to the band's seven members.

New record for ‘blind box' toy: Human-sized Labubu figure sold for whooping $150,000 at Beijing auction — Check details

A human-sized Labubu figure was sold at an auction house in Beijing, China, on Tuesday, 10 June 2025, for $150,275.51 (1.08 million yuan), marking a new record for the 'blind box' toy, reported the news agency Reuters. The deal was closed at the Yongle International Auction in Beijing, where more than 2,000 people placed their bids through Yongle's mobile application, and nearly 200 people attended the event in person, according to the report. One of the auction bidders, Du, said that she planned to spend a maximum of 20,000 yuan on the toy. However, she had to walk out empty-handed after the price jumped to over $150,000. 'My child likes it so every time when Labubu released new products we will buy one or two items. It is hard to explain its popularity but it must have moved this generation,' Du told the news agency. According to the agency report, the toy was a one-of-one 4.3 feet (131 cm) tall Labubu figure in 'mint green' colour, which was sold as the highest crossing item in the auction house on Tuesday. The Labubu was made by a Hong Kong-based artist and illustrator named Kasing Lung nearly a decade ago. Later, in 2019, the artist agreed to let Pop Mart sell these figurines. Pop Mart is a Chinese toymaker that markets collectable figurines. They started selling these items in blind boxes, which act as a surprise for the buyers, who do not know exactly what design they will receive until they open the packaging. Labubu blind box toys sold in Pop Mart's stores are around 50 yuan, according to the agency report. The Labubu figurine became popular after top social media celebrities like Korean pop music group Blackpink's Lisa and British football star David Beckham were spotted with the same. Lisa reportedly praised the doll in interviews and online posts, while Beckham also shared a photo on Instagram of his Labubu figure attached to a bag. According to Mint's earlier report, Dua Lipa and Jahnvi Kapoor are among other celebrities who own the China-made Labubu figurine.

Paramount to lay off 3.5% of US staff in latest job cut

Paramount Global is laying off 3.5% of its U.S. staff in the latest round of job cuts as the company grapples with a decline in cable TV subscribers, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters. The layoff was communicated to its staff on Tuesday morning and it could affect some non-U.S. workforce over time, the memo from the office of the company's three co-CEOs showed. This is in addition to the 15% cuts Paramount had announced last August and comes as the media industry navigates a "generational disruption" as millions of cable users cut the cord and opt for streaming services such as Netflix. "We are taking the hard, but necessary steps to further streamline our organization starting this week," Paramount Co-CEOs George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins wrote in the memo. Paramount had 18,600 employees as of Dec. 31, 2024. CNBC first reported the development on Tuesday. The company has pitched its $8.4 billion merger with billionaire scion David Ellison's Skydance Media . But the deal is yet to secure regulatory approval, pending a $10 billion lawsuit U.S. President Donald Trump filed against CBS News in October over an interview with then-vice president Kamala Harris that he alleged was deceptively edited to favor Harris.
