Meghalaya most active among NE states in disaster warning system: Official
Shillong, Aug 20 (PTI) The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) in Meghalaya has emerged as the most proactive among North Eastern states in deploying the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP)-based integrated alert system of disaster warning, an official claimed on Wednesday.
The SDMA in Meghalaya has sent 62 alert messages to over 7.28 lakh mobile phone subscribers with a total of 13.84 lakh alert SMS, he said.
The integrated alert system enables real-time dissemination of disaster warnings through multiple platforms, including SMS, mobile applications, browser notifications and satellite-based channels.
The alerts cover a wide range of hazards such as floods, cyclones, thunderstorms, lightning, avalanches and tsunamis, thereby strengthening last-mile connectivity during emergencies.
Timely alerts generated by the India Meteorological Department's Shillong centre have empowered the SDMA to issue faster and more accurate warnings, improving preparedness and response on the ground.
The CAP platform, also known as 'SACHET', integrates national agencies like the IMD and Central Water Commission with state-level disaster authorities for uniform and geo-targeted dissemination of alerts.
Although the system is being rolled out across the country, Meghalaya is 'far ahead" of other states in the region in terms of adoption and effective utilisation, the official claimed. PTI JOP RG

The Sindh government ordered all private and public educational institutions across Karachi to remain shut on Wednesday after torrential monsoon rain left at least 10 people dead in the densely populated port city, news agency Reuters reported. The rains began in Karachi on Tuesday, causing widespread flooding as rainfall reached levels not seen in years in some parts of the southern city, which is Pakistan's financial capital and biggest city – home to more than 20 million people. Around 178 mm of rain was recorded in the northeast of Karachi, the highest since the weather station there was set up five years ago. Sharif, Munir, and several federal ministers visited the flood-affected districts of Swat, Buner, Shangla, and Swabi and received a comprehensive briefing on the ongoing rescue and relief operations in the region, news agency PTI reported. The Prime Minister emphasised that 'every available national resource will be mobilised to accelerate recovery efforts and restore normalcy in the affected areas." Sharif also distributed compensation cheques worth Rs 2 million to affected people. Buner and Swabi emerged as the worst-hit districts while Swat, Bajaur, Mansehra, Shangla, Lower Dir, Battagram and Swabi have also been badly affected due to persistent rains and floods across the province since last week. Flash floods triggered by cloudbursts in the mountainous northwest have brought destruction since Friday in the worst spell of this year's monsoon in the country. Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa was the worst hit, where 427 people have died so far, followed by 164 in Punjab, 29 in Sindh, 22 in Balochistan, 56 in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and eight in the Islamabad region, PTI reported. NDMA chief Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik said that more than 25,000 people have been rescued so far from flood-hit areas. Meanwhile, internet services were fully restored nationwide after a disruption caused by heavy rainfall, ARY News reported, citing Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) statement. Users across major cities, including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Peshawar experienced connectivity issues, with Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) services facing major disruptions, as per ARY News. Himachal: Toll collection suspended at two points in Bilaspur due to landslides
Shimla, Aug 20 (PTI) Fee collections at Baloh and Garamora toll plazas on the Kiratpur-�Nerchowk four-lane highway in Himachal's Bilapsur district has been suspended for a month in view of landslides triggered by heavy rains, officials said on Wednesday. Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, Bilapsur, Rahul Kumar has issued the orders under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005. All toll collection at the two toll plazas will be suspended with immediate effect for a period of one month in the interest of public convenience, as per the order. Incessant heavy rainfall and landslides have caused severe damage to several portions of the national highway and falling boulders and repeated blockages have disrupted vehicular movement, leaving commuters stranded for hours. Earlier, Town and Country Planning Minister Rajesh Dharmani had raised the issue with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, highlighting that when major portions of the highway remain partially or fully blocked, charging toll is not justified and urged that toll collection be suspended. Sukhu assured him that the issue would be taken up seriously and necessary steps would be initiated. Delhi records high of 36.2 deg C; Air quality satisfactory
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) Delhi on Wednesday recorded a maximum temperature of 36.2 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The minimum temperature was recorded at 25.8 degrees Celsius , 0.7 degree below normal, the weather office said. The relative humidity was 78 per cent at 8.30 am and 81 per cent at 5.30 pm. The maximum and minimum temperatures on Thursday are expected to settle around 35 and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively, the IMD said. Delhi's air quality was recorded in the 'satisfactory' category with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 79 at 4 pm, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed. According to CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.
