
Pix adds recurring payments

Pix Automático will facilitate recurring charges that let users authorise periodic debits automatically, without the need for authentication for each transaction.
The central bank predicts the feature will be useful for a host of options, including schools, colleges, gyms, condominiums, social clubs, health plans, streaming services, news portals, subscription clubs, and FS firms.
Launched in late 2020, Pix has proved a runaway success, used by 170 million people, 91% of the country's adult population.
At the same time, 60 million Brazilians don't have credit cards, leaving a significant potential market for the new Pix Automático. According to vendor Ebanx, it could unlock $30 billion in online recurring payments within two years.
Ebanx has already integrated the recurring payments feature, with global streaming platforms and SaaS companies among the first to tap into it. PPRO and digital bank Nubank have also been quick off the mark with their own integrations coming onstream.
Pix saw a 52% increase in transaction volume in 2024, according to central bank data. By the last quarter of the year, it accounted for nearly half of all non-cash payment transactions in Brazil.

Fed to scrap program devoted to policing banks on crypto, fintech activities
WASHINGTON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve announced on Friday it was scrapping a so-called "novel activities" supervision program it created to specifically police banks on their crypto and fintech activities, and instead will integrate that work into its regular bank oversight. The Fed launched the new program in 2023 as a way to focus on how banks interact with those emerging technologies. But the central bank said it was no longer needed as the Fed has strengthened its understanding of those risks and how banksmanage them.

Nigeria's inflation eases in July, food price rise
ABUJA, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Nigeria's annual inflation rate (NGCPIY=ECI), opens new tab eased in July to 21.88% from 22.22% in June, marking the fourth month of decline, data from its statistics agency showed on Friday. Inflation has been on a downward trend this year after the statistics agency updated the base year for its calculations and reweighted the basket of items it uses to gauge price trends. The price index had soared to more than 34% last year before the rebasing. Food inflation, a key driver of the headline rate, stood at 22.74% year on year (NGFINF=ECI), opens new tab in July compared with 21.97% the month before. The central bank last month kept its monetary policy rate on hold at 27.50% (NGCBIR=ECI), opens new tab for the third consecutive time this year, pledging to maintain its current stance until inflation risks recede. Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso acknowledged in July that inflation was easing but said rate-setting decisions were based on the need to sustain disinflation.
