Over 350 flights at Delhi airport delayed due to bad weather, traffic jams

More than 350 flights were delayed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Thursday after heavy morning rainfall triggered massive traffic jams across the National Capital Region, preventing both passengers and flight crew from reaching the airport. Even hours after the rain had stopped, gridlock on key approach roads left many unable to reach the airport in time, with several missing their flights altogether. Passengers stuck in a traffic jam walk towards the airport on Sardar Patel Marg near Dhaula Kuan on Thursday. (Raj K Raj/HT Photo) Delhi airport authorities issued advisories urging travellers to opt for the Metro instead of road transport. The Metro's Magenta Line is connected to the airport Terminal 1 and the Airport Express Line (Orange) connects to Terminal 3. 'Heavy rainfall and waterlogging across the Delhi-National Capital Region since morning led to traffic jams on roads to and from the Delhi airport. Our on-ground teams are working diligently, with all stakeholders to ensure smooth journey of passengers. We recommend that passengers consider alternative modes of transportation, such as the Delhi Metro, to avoid potential delays,' the Delhi airport's post on X said. Data from the flight tracking website FlightRadar24 showed by 6pm, at least 377 flights were delayed – with an average delay time of 32 minutes. Passengers used social media to share their ordeal, stating flights were missed and cars remained stuck in traffic for several hours – in some cases longer than the actual flight journey. Among the flights delayed was also a Delhi to Bagdogra flight, after a crew member was unable to reach the airport. The flight eventually departed in the evening. 'A flight crew member got stuck in traffic. This was the only instance of a flight being delayed due to the staff. In other cases, flights were delayed due to the weather,' an airline official said. A passenger, Arun, posted on X that he was able to move only 2km in three hours. '3 hours for 2 km at Delhi Airport. Missed my domestic flight. @DelhiPolice — this isn't traffic management, it's a masterclass in incompetence. #DelhiAirport,' the post on X said. Dheeraj Gaur, another user, said he reached office after travelling 6.5km in 1.5 hours. 'The entire Thimayya Marg in the Delhi Cantonment area and the traffic signal outside Airforce Station Palam is choked. People are walking with luggage in hands to reach the airport on time,' said Gaur around 11.30am. 'I've been stuck at Palam Airport Road near Krishan temple for the last two hours. Delhi Traffic Police personnel are nowhere to be seen. It's total chaos here — vehicles are moving left, right and centre. One person was driving on the wrong side, too,' said another, at 1.04pm. Some people said that the traffic jam was taking up more of their time than the flight duration itself. 'Came in from Indore in an hour and a half to Delhi and am now stuck in traffic for the last two and a half hours at the Delhi airport,' said Venita Kaul on X.

Building Pune: Longest Metro route proposed to provide connectivity across Pimpri Chinchwad

After connecting Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad as well as four corners of the city through Metro rail, the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) has now proposed to connect four corners of the Pimpri Chinchwad region and extend its connectivity to the neighbouring industrial town of Chakan from Nigdi via Wakad, Pimple Saudagar, and Bhosari. Once the Central Government gives its approval, the proposed 41-km-long Bhakti Shakti-Wakad-Nashik Phata-Chakan route will be the longest route of Pune Metro in the city. It has been proposed to provide changeover for commuters on the new route by providing connectivity via skywalk to Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar line at Wakad and Swargate to Pimpri Chinchwad line at Sant Tukaramnagar Metro station, allowing Metro rail accessibility to any corner of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. The Metro route named Bhakti Shakti-Wakad-Nashik Phata-Chakan is designed to run at a maximum speed of 80 km per hour. It is expected to have a ridership of 3.38 lakh per day by 2031, which would increase to 7.81 lakh by 2061. Stations on the new route The Metro train will start from Bhakti Shakti on Old Mumbai-Pune highway and will have stations at Transport Nagar, Ganesh Nagar, Mukai Chowk, Ravet, Punawale Gaon, Punawale, Tathawade Gaon, Tathawade, Bhumar chowk, Bhujbal chowk, Wakad Vishal Nagar corner, Kokane chowk, Pimple Saudagar, Pimple Gurav, Nashik Phata, Sant Tukaramnagar, Valabh Nagar, Gavli Matha chowk, Bhosari MIDC, Bhosari District Centre, Godown chowk, PIEC, Bharatmata Moshi, Chimbali Phata, Bargevasti, Kuruli, Alandi Phata, Nanekarwadi and Chakan. The Maha-Metro has proposed a depot-cum-workshop near the Bhosari District Centre Metro station land, of 12.04 hectares owned by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). The route will have three car coaches to ply, while 63 coaches will be required by 2031 to meet the estimated ridership, with 48 coaches for the Bhakti-Shakti to Chakan route and 15 coaches for the Bhumkar Chowk to Godown Chowk route. These coaches will handle 3.38 lakh commuters daily. The coaches will have to be increased on the new stretch to 129 to meet the estimated ridership of 7.81 lakh per day, officials said. The PCMC and state government will have to carry out land acquisition as the proposed route falls under the jurisdiction of PCMC and PMRDA. The proposal, after approval of the PCMC and PMRDA, will be forwarded to the state government for approval. It will be implemented only after a go-ahead by the Central Government. The previous longest route was the 31.63-km Khadakwasla-Kharadi route, which is set to be constructed at Rs 9,897 crore. Though it has got the approval of the state government, authorities are awaiting the nod of the Central Government for implementation. At present, the Swargate to Pimpri Chinchwad route and Vanaz to Ramwadi route are operational, while the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar rail route will be operational in the next few months. Meanwhile, the Pune Metro Rail has begun the extension of the route from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti and Swargate to Katraj after the approval from the Central Government last year. In June this year, the Centre approved the development of Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi routes, while the proposal for the new route from SNDT to Manikbaug via Warje and Khadakwasla to Kharadi is awaiting the Centre's nod. BJP legislator Shankar Jagtap from Chinchwad said, 'A game-changer for Pimpri-Chinchwad is coming closer as Maha-Metro has officially submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) to PCMC — the first big step towards making the Nigdi to Chakan Metro a reality.' The route from Bhakti-Shakti Chowk in Nigdi to Chakan will provide seamless connectivity for 35-40 km and link almost 75 per cent of Pimpri Chinchwad city with fast, comfortable, and eco-friendly transit, he said, adding this Metro will cut travel time to Chakan MIDC and PCMC's busiest hubs.

Tejasvi Surya promises two new Yellow Line trains each month from Oct

Bengaluru: Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya shared his first-hand experience of travelling on the newly inaugurated Namma Metro Yellow Line, describing it as a transformative moment for commuters in the city. Writing on his Facebook page, he said he travelled alongside thousands of passengers on the line's first day of operations, including students, IT professionals, garment workers, and factory employees from Bommasandra. 'Earlier, this journey used to take over two hours every day. Now, it takes just 35 minutes,' Surya noted, adding that several passengers told him the time saved would allow them to spend more time with their families. 'Every response reflected a shared aspiration for a better quality of life,' he said. Surya also revealed that he had spoken to the Managing Director of Titagarh, the manufacturer of the Metro trains. 'Starting October, two new train sets will be added every month, and by the end of this month, one additional train service will be introduced,' he confirmed in his post. The Yellow Line, which connects RV Road to Bommasandra, was inaugurated recently and is expected to significantly reduce travel time for thousands of daily commuters.
