Eritrea: Eye Surgery for Over 250 Citizens in Golij Sub-zone
Dr. Merhawi Kiflom, Medical Director of the Golij Community Hospital, stated that the objective of the program was to provide citizens with access to eye care services, including surgical treatment, within their local areas.
Mr. Alem Zekarias, Head of the National Blindness Control Program, noted that while cataract surgeries were previously conducted in collaboration with foreign experts, the current program was implemented entirely through local capacity.
Dr. Eyob Beyene, one of the participating physicians, explained that cataracts often occur with age and are treatable and curable through timely surgical intervention.

Syrian conjoined twins successfully separated in Saudi after complex 8-hour surgery
Syrian conjoined twins Selin and Elin, aged one year and five months, have been successfully separated after a highly complex surgical procedure in Saudi Arabia. The intricate procedure, which lasted eight continuous hours, was performed by a multidisciplinary team of 24 medical specialists. 'This achievement is a testament to the high calibre of Saudi medical professionals and the Kingdom's humanitarian mission to serve people worldwide," said Dr Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, head of the surgical team and Supervisor General of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief). According to Saudi Gazette, the operation took place at King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City, under the Ministry of National Guard in Riyadh. The surgical team included experts in paediatric surgery, anaesthesiology, plastic surgery, and other key fields, ensuring every stage of the procedure was performed with maximum precision and safety. The twins' family expressed heartfelt thanks to King Salman, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and the dedicated medical team for the exceptional care their daughters received. This marks the fourth successful separation of conjoined twins from Syria and the 66th surgery completed under the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme — a globally recognised initiative that has evaluated 150 cases from 27 countries over the past 35 years. The surgical team included specialists in paediatric surgery, anaesthesiology, plastic surgery, and other critical disciplines, ensuring every stage of the procedure was performed with maximum precision and safety. The procedure took place at King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City, under the Ministry of National Guard in Riyadh. The successful operation also drew praise from Syrian officials. Hussein Abdulaziz, chargé d'affaires at the Syrian Embassy in Riyadh, thanked the Saudi government, KSrelief, and the entire medical team. He highlighted the advanced capabilities of the Kingdom's healthcare system and noted the operation as a powerful symbol of the strong brotherly ties between Saudi Arabia and Syria. This is not the first time Saudi Arabia has extended its advanced medical services to children from abroad. In June last year, a similar procedure was performed on six-month-old Filipino conjoined twins, Akeiza and Aisha. The surgery, which was conducted in five stages over 7.5 hours, had a projected success rate of 70 per cent and was also carried out at King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital.

Orotta College of Medicine and Health Sciences, in its 4th commencement, today conferred postgraduate, first degree, and diploma qualifications to 391 graduates, including 55% female students. Postgraduate programs included fields such as Clinical Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics and Child Health. Fields of study for first degree and diploma programs included Doctor of Medicine, Pharmacy, Pharmacy Technician, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory, Dental Technology, Radiology, Adult Health Nursing, Anesthesia, Emergency and Critical Care, Midwifery, Ophthalmic Nursing, Comprehensive Nursing, and Environmental Health. Dr. Yemane Seium, Dean of the College, stated that the graduates will significantly contribute to reducing medical training costs, improving the quality of care provided to the public, and addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals in the country. Dr. Yemane also noted that academic activities at the college are conducted by 90 faculty members, 70 Eritrean and 20 foreign professionals. He added that during the current academic year, 12 faculty members of Orotta College of Medicine and Health Science are pursuing postgraduate studies inside the country and abroad. In her keynote address, Ms. Amina Nurhussein, Minister of Health, emphasized that the encouraging progress in the health sector is the result of the Government's substantial investment across all sectors. She called on the graduates to actively contribute to realizing the roadmap of the national health sector. A representative of the graduates highlighted the growing role of youth professionals in advancing national healthcare services and affirmed their readiness to serve the public with dedication. Eritrea: Training on Hepatitis B Virus Vaccination
The Ministry of Health branch in the Southern Red Sea Region organized training on Hepatitis B vaccination for 70 members of its branch office. The training took place in the port city of Assab on 18 and 19 July. Dr. Ali Halo, head of the Ministry of Health branch in the region, stated that the training aimed to enhance understanding of the Hepatitis B vaccination program, which is set to be implemented nationwide.
