Estêvão wow as Delap and João Pedro state cases to lead Chelsea line

Chelsea played their final pre-season game on Sunday, with several new faces impressing in a 4-1 win against AC Milan at Stamford Bridge. Having returned from their Club World Cup triumph in the United States last month, Chelsea were playing only their second warm-up match, after beating Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 on Friday, and this is what we learnt:
Enzo Maresca said on Friday that bringing in a new centre half was a 'priority' after the news that Colwill is likely to be out of action for the rest of the year, having had surgery on a knee. However, this weekend's fixtures have enabled the head coach to assess the options at his disposal.
On Sunday he opted for a partnership of Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah, who fared well coping with sporadic Milan attacks, especially Adarabioyo, who recovered well twice with last-ditch tackles.
There was cause for concern, though, when Chalobah limped off just before the hour mark with an ankle injury. After landing awkwardly in a challenge, the centre back played on for four minutes before being substituted for 19-year-old Josh Acheampong. Chalobah left the field unaided and was walking less gingerly after the final whistle.
João Pedro impressed again as he picked up his fifth goal in his past four games for Chelsea. He headed home Pedro Neto's cross from close range in the opening ten minutes to put his side 2-0 up after an own goal from the centre back Andrei Coubis had given them the lead in the fifth minute.
Thirteen minutes later João Pedro went through on goal and grappled with Coubis, who was sent off for pulling the striker to the ground.
Battling for a starting place up front is fellow new arrival Liam Delap, who scored twice in a 30-minute cameo. His first came from the penalty spot, before he struck an instinctive first-time finish into the far corner of the net.
'I don't want to say it's a competition,' João Pedro said when asked about his and Delap's performances. 'It's very good for Chelsea to have both strikers of a good level. Last game he didn't score but today he scored two goals and I'm very happy for him.'
The excellent starts made by the duo have contributed to Nicolas Jackson falling out of favour. The Senegal striker was absent from the squad again after reaching an agreement with the club in the week that he can leave.
Estêvão, 18, has already become a fan favourite despite featuring only twice since his arrival from Palmeiras. The cheer from the home fans when the Brazil winger's name was announced was notably loud.
Initially he replaced Cole Palmer in the centre and soon won the penalty that was dispatched by Delap. He was eventually moved out to his more natural role on the right and almost got on the scoresheet when he cut in and fired with his left foot to force a full-stretch save from Mike Maignan.
Jamie Gittens's impact was more understated on the left on his first start, but he did play a part in the first goal by winning a free kick deep into the Milan half that led to Coubis's own goal.
The winger, who was signed from Borussia Dortmund, found space in dangerous areas but frequently struggled to find the target.
'Most of them are on the scoresheet today. They have started well,' Reece James, the Chelsea captain, said of the new arrivals. 'They are very talented boys and great additions to the team.'

Ruben Amorim offers Man Utd flop in £120m deal to sign Carlos Baleba

Manchester United are willing to offer a member of Ruben Amorim's 'bomb squad' in a stunning £120m deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. Cameroon international Baleba is believed to be United's top transfer target for the midfield position. The 21-year-old has enjoyed two impressive seasons at Brighton since his £23m move from Ligue 1 side Lille in 2023. Baleba made just 21 league appearances for Lille but has quickly developed into one of the most highly-rated midfielders in the Premier League and a top target for Manchester United. United have spent almost £200m on attacking players this summer, bringing Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to Old Trafford. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. But Ruben Amorim is well aware of the holes that were in his midfield last season and ideally would have liked to see a new midfielder arrive through the doors. Baleba ticks a lot of boxes for Manchester United and, according to The Independent, has indicated he is 'highly keen' for a move to Old Trafford. But Brighton have insisted they want to keep Baleba at the club for at least one more season and if they do sale, will expect to receive at least £100m. Despite Brighton potentially demanding up to £120m, The Independent say Manchester United are 'actively' trying to complete a deal. Baleba is Ineos' top midfield target and Old Trafford bosses are trying to find creative solutions to meet Brighton's steep demands. One option, it has been claimed, is to use Jadon Sancho as bait in the deal, although Brighton are not believed to be interested in the United winger. Sancho has held talks with a number of Serie A clubs this summer after being placed in Amorim's bomb squad along with Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. Brighton will demand a transfer record for an African player to sell Baleba, with Nicolas Pepe currently holding that accolade following his £72m move to Arsenal in 2019. The Seagulls are in a strong negotiating position as Baleba still has three more years left on his current contract, with Brighton also having an option to extend by 12 months. Significant player sales could alter Manchester United's stance as they are awaiting a first bid from Chelsea for Argentinian winger Garnacho. Sancho and Antony have also been put up for sale, while United are open to offers for Rasmus Hojlund following Benjamin Sesko's £74m move from RB Leipzig. Speaking at a fans' forum last week, Brighton chief executive Paul Barber admitted Baleba could leave but denied any contact with Manchester United. 'Carlos is a fantastic talent,' he said. 'We hope he'll be here for years to come – but it's subject to the dynamics of the football world, which isn't always predictable.' Baleba has been linked with Manchester City as well as Manchester United but Wes Brown believes he should push for a move to Old Trafford. More Trending 'Man United have a big heritage and a big history,' he said. 'You can see with the signings we've made that we're tyring to get back to winning ways. 'He's done really well. He's a player who has probably been under the radar a little bit. He's quick, sharp, he has a brilliant left foot, he gets in your face and he can tackle. 'I think he's the sort of player the manager is looking for in midfield. He's be very exciting. He'd put a stamp on the midfield along with Bruno Fernandes. He'd be a really positive buy.' A number of Manchester United players have reportedly contacted Baleba in a bid to convince him to push for a move to the club. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
