Without directly naming Shah Rukh, she reportedly raised concerns over what made Jawan worthy of Best Actor recognition, while veteran Malayalam actor Vijayaraghavan's powerful performance wasn't even considered in the lead category. Her remarks sparked debate online.
On the other hand, a section of netizens expressed surprise over Shah Rukh Khan's National Award win for 'Jawan,' questioning why it took 33 years for such an honour to come his way.
Many pointed out that some of his most iconic performances — in films like 'Devdas,' 'Swades,' 'Veer Zaara' and 'Chak De! India'— went unrecognised. The actor's win sparked a debate about the timing and criteria behind the jury's decision.
Amid the rising criticism surrounding Shah Rukh Khan's National Award win, veteran actor Mukesh Khanna stepped in to defend the actor.
He told IANS, 'People who are saying that Shah Rukh Khan should not have received the award for this film (Jawan) but for Swades — remember A R Rahman received the Oscar for 'Jai Ho' and not for the various beautiful songs he created in the past. Shah Rukh has been working hard for the past 40 years now — so what is wrong if he has received a National Award?'

Odum Kuthira Chadum Kuthira trailer: Although he has helmed only one film thus far — and that too about eight years ago — the impact Althaf Salim created with his directorial debut, the Nivin Pauly-starrer Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela, was so powerful that Malayalam movie enthusiasts have since been rooting for his comeback. Despite never truly disappearing from the public eye and remaining active, winning hearts as a comedy actor known for his impactful one-liners, audiences had long been waiting for Althaf to don the director's hat again. Hence, ever since reports emerged that he is working on his sophomore venture, expectations have naturally been high. These expectations soared even further after it was revealed that the movie, Odum Kuthira Chadum Kuthira, is headlined by Fahadh Faasil. Now, the makers have unveiled the film's official trailer, setting the ball in motion for the film's release. Although the promo doesn't play spoilsport by revealing too much about the movie, Althaf has ensured that it's cleverly packed with crisp and fun-filled, albeit somewhat disjointed, moments, offering a sneak peek into the chaotic world of Odum Kuthira Chadum Kuthira. The 2.36-minute trailer opens by showing Kalyani Priyadarshan's character telling her boyfriend, Aby (Fahadh), about a dream that she has been having for quite some time now. 'A horse that looked like a piece of white, plump halwa! It was so dreamy,' she recalls. From that moment on, we see Aby's relentless efforts to find such a horse for their wedding, as per her wishes. But the task proves to be far from easy. 'She isn't just a little crazy; she's completely nuts,' one of his friends warns Aby. But everything is fair in war and love, right? Or is it just a senseless adage that people use to justify their erratic behaviour in those situations? 'Is madness contagious?' we soon hear Aby asking another one of his friends. As the trailer progresses, it offers more glimpses of things spiralling out of control and Aby's mostly futile efforts to resolve things. Much like Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela, Althaf has liberally used references from the actors' personal and professional lives here as well, evoking humour at every juncture. Intriguingly enough, we see actor Lal playing a character that appears to have heavy shades of his iconic role as the mad genius Harinarayanan in One Man Show (2001). Similarly, in one moment, Fahadh is shown asking, 'Don't I look just like Ranbir Kapoor right now?' While this reflects the mutual respect Fahadh and Ranbir have always publicly expressed, Althaf turns this moment also into a joke when Aby's friend replies, 'You look more like Ranbir kaput.' The director has played around with fans' obsession with Fahadh's expressive eyes too, as Lal's character points out towards the end of the promo, 'From now on, your eyes get no rest, Aby.' Interestingly, the title translates literally to 'running horse, jumping horse' and is part of a popular Malayalam riddle. However, in the trailer's closed captions on YouTube, Odum Kuthira Chadum Kuthira is humorously translated to 'Who let the horse out?' — inspired by Baha Men's iconic track 'Who Let the Dogs Out' — suggesting that the film will thrive on chaos comedy. The promo also promises a blend of drama and intense and thrilling moments to keep the audience engaged throughout. Besides Fahadh Faasil and a decade younger Kalyani Priyadarshan as the lead pair, the movie also features Revathi Pillai and Vinay Forrt in key roles. Odum Kuthira Chadum Kuthira will hit the screens on August 29, coinciding with the Onam season, during which it will clash at the box office with Sathyan Anthikad's Mohanlal-starrer Hridayapoorvam.

Shoojit Sircar defends National Award jury amid row over The Kerala Story, Shah Rukh: 'Jury should have the final word'
Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar is donning a new hat these days, that of a judge. For the second year in a row, the acclaimed director is on the jury of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), selecting the Best Short Films at the festival. Ahead of the 2025 IFFM, Shoojit speaks to Hindustan Times about the experience and the difficulty of judging art. Shoojit Sircar is serving as a jury member at the IFFM 2025. On the difficulty of judging cinema Shoojit says he does not like judging cinema, but made an exception for the IFFM. "IFFM is very dear to me. The organisers are dear friends and this particular festival is almost like a family affair. This is my fifth or sixth visit there. I normally don't participate in juries and being a judge. But for this, I made an exception," he tells us. But the filmmaker agrees that judging something as subjective as cinema is 'very difficult'. He explains how he goes about it. "Before we start, we tell everyone that there are certain elements that they should take into consideration. There are technicalities where you can really possibly judge the craft. Then, you should celebrate the film that really makes a difference. And then, the voice and vision of the director are very important. You look at films that bring a lot of social change and have a long-lasting impact. Of course, there are technicalities to look into it, in terms of cinematography, editing, direction, actors, everything." On the National Award row Recently, when the National Film Awards were announced, many across the country expressed surprise at Shah Rukh Khan winning Best Actor and The Kerala Story being adjudged the Best Film. Shoojit re-emphasises the subjective nature of art when asked about the row. "I feel that there is no point debating this from the outside," he says, adding, "You leave it to the jury. We might agree to disagree on many things, but finally, what matters is, who is the jury there. Because that jury is going to be your final word, and you leave it to their sensibility. You can't question what award they have given. I think we would rather question that before they start. Who is the jury? What are their sensibilities?" Taking a leaf out of his own book, the filmmaker concludes with an anecdote: "When Sardar Udham's panorama selection (for the 2021 International Film Festival of India) didn't happen, I was asked the same things. I will say what I said then: 'Whatever the jury has decided, I have to accept it'." The 2025 edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne begins August 14 and continues till August 24.

Kammattam is by Shan Thulasidharan. It has been a unique experience to be a part of the first Malayalam web series on ZEE5, according to actor Sudev Nair. In his remarks, he described the project as a complex investigation of silence, trust, and the unstated conflicts that define human beings.
