Bengaluru news: ED conducts searches at educational institutions linked to Karnataka Home Minister
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is conducting searches at educational institutions that are said to be linked to Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara at Tumakuru and on the outskirts of Bengaluru, official sources said on Wednesday.
The searches were underway at Sri Siddhartha Medical College and Sri Siddhartha Institute Of Technology in Tumakuru and Sri Siddhartha Institute of Medical Sciences in Nelamangala on the outskirts of Bengaluru, news agency PTI said, citing sources.
The reasons for the searches are not yet known.
When reporters questioned about this, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, "I don't know...I will check and speak."
Denying the involvement of Home Minister G Parameshwara in any case, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Wednesday said that the leader is a very "decent" and "simple" man, an ANI report said.
Speaking to media persons, Shivakumar said, "I am sure that in no way my Home Minister is involved in any case. He is a very decent and simple man. No way G Parameshwara is involved in such a type of case."
The ED on Wednesday conducted search operations in various cities, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jalandhar, Indore and Kolkata, in connection with its probe into alleged money laundering in a firm, a PTI report said.
The searches were carried out under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, the agency said in a social media post.
During the search operations, the ED seized foreign currencies, including US Dollars, Singapore Dollars and Dirhams, amounting to around ₹ 6.43 lakh, gold bullion worth ₹ 55.74 lakh, and froze bank accounts with a total balance of around ₹ 94 lakh, it said.
Property documents, several digital devices, and various incriminating documents were also seized, the agency added.

Actor Dino Morea appears before ED for questioning in Mithi River desilting case
Actor Dino Morea Thursday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and joined the money laundering investigation the agency is carrying out in connection with the multi-crore Mithi River desilting scam. Morea, a close friend of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, arrived at the agency's Ballard Estate office with his brother. Morea is reportedly closely linked to Ketan Kadam, the alleged middleman of Vodar India Ltd., with whom he has been reportedly acquainted for the past 25 years. Officers with the Mumbai police Economic Offences Wing (EOW) suspect that Morea may have helped the accused influence contractors. EOW sources said there are five to seven monetary transactions worth Rs 14-18 lakh between Morea and Kadam, one of the two middlemen and a key accused in the scam. The SIT's probe is revolving around these transactions, prompting investigators to question the actor. The EOW booked the 13 people for allegedly causing wrongful loss to the civic body worth more than Rs 65.54 crore. Based on the EOW's predicate offence, the ED last month registered an enforcement case information report (ECIR) and began a money laundering investigation. The ED last week conducted a massive search in Mumbai and Kochi in Kerala. The searches were held at more than 15 locations, including the houses and offices of 13 Brihanmumbai Corporation (BMC) officers, contractors, and middlemen named as accused in the FIR the EOW filed last month. Searches were also held at the Bandra (West) residence of Morea. After the searches, the agency summoned Morea and his brother to join the probe. Sources said the central agency, before initiating any major action, has already begun investigating the properties acquired by the accused during the scam period and the source of the money used to acquire those properties. During the initial inquiry, crucial findings emerged, prompting the agency to conduct search operations. Desilting work contracts worth nearly Rs 1,100 crore are under the scanner. The Mithi River is an 18.64-km seasonal river that runs alongside residential slum pockets and industrial areas. It serves as a natural stormwater drainage channel for Mumbai, carrying excess water during the monsoon season. But, over the years, it has been used by residents to dump garbage, sewage, and industrial waste, polluting it to a significant level. After the 2005 Mumbai floods, the authorities realised the issues with the Mithi River, and the government put in efforts to clean the sludge from the riverbed to ensure uninterrupted water flow. It has been alleged that massive corruption occurred in the desilting work sanctioned and carried out by the BMC. An initial inquiry by the police revealed that various financial irregularities occurred in contracts for desilting the river between 2021-22 and 2022-23. These irregularities were related to the transportation of sludge and its dumping on the ground. Later, the EOW found that the contractors had submitted nine fake memoranda of understanding (MoUs). The accused BMC officers allegedly misused their positions for wrongful financial gain. The SIT under EOW has already arrested two middlemen – Ketan Kadam and Jay Joshi – in the case. Joshi is the owner of Virgo Specialties Pvt Ltd, and Kadam is from Vodar India LLP. Joshi has secured bail in the matter, while two named serving BMC officers and one retired civic official have moved the court seeking anticipatory bail.

ED searches on Cong MP, MLAs ‘conspiracy' to divide party: Kharge
Kalaburagi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday termed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) searches against a party MP and three MLAs in the state, as a 'conspiracy' to divide the party in Karnataka. Without taking the name of the ruling BJP at the Centre, he claimed that the grand old party was being targeted, aimed at creating difference within the party, to reap benefits out of it, but they wouldn't be successful in their attempts as all Congress legislators are united. 'I don't know the details. I just saw it on TV. Naturally, if the ED has done it, they have been angry with the Congress party since the beginning. If they are targeting the Congress MLAs, there seems to be a conspiracy to divide our party,' Kharge said. Speaking to reporters here, he said if they harass them by bringing up something now that is said to have happened during the election, it is not right. 'The matter should have been looked into during the election, but after one year, one-and-half year, if they are taking it up now, it seems to be an attempt to divide the party legislators here. Let's see how the ED takes the case. I will get information from the CM over the phone and see what needs to be done,' he added. The ED on Wednesday conducted searches against Congress Ballari MP E Tukaram and three MLAs of the party as part of a money laundering investigation into the alleged Valmiki scam-linked money laundering case, official sources said. They said five premises in Ballari and three in Bengaluru city are being searched under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). These include houses belonging to Tukaram and MLAs Nara Bharath Reddy (Bellary city), J N Ganesh (Kampli) and N T Srinivas (Kudligi). To a question about an allegation by the ED that the corporation's money was misused, Kharge said, 'They may say so. It is a matter left to ED. I will not interfere. Such inquiries happen. During elections, crores of rupees are seized. Where is it? To whom does it belong? So far, things haven't come out. Money was seized from all parties then. Where is that money?' Noting that everyone knows who spends how much during elections, while indicating to the BJP, he said, 'They especially target one party (Congress) because, if they trouble this party naturally, there will be differences within, and they feel that it will benefit them. But it is impossible. Despite all their harassment, all our MLAs are united, and this is nothing new in Karnataka...I don't want to comment more until the inquiry is completed,' he added. Sources said the searches are being conducted in order to gather evidence on the allegation that funds siphoned off from the accounts of the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki ST Development Corporation (KMVSTDC) were used for election expenses -- to distribute cash to voters and Congress workers of the Ballari seat during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

New Delhi: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, on Thursday, refuted the rumours of him buying the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise, saying that he is not a mad man. Speaking to ANI, Shivakumar said that he had offers to be part of the management, but he doesn't have time for this.'I am not a mad man. I'm just a member of the Karnataka Cricket Association from my younger days, that's all. I don't have time, though I had offers to be part of the management... Why do I need RCB? I don't even drink Royal Challenge,' the Karnataka Dy CM said. On June 4, the stampede that occurred during celebrations outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Indian Premier League (IPL) victory celebrations claimed 11 lives. Following the Bengaluru stampede, the Karnataka Government on June 5 suspended top police officials at the Cubbon Park Police Station and formed a one-man commission under a retired High Court Judge to probe the incident. Earlier in the day, Siddaramaiah dismissed the BJP's demand for his resignation over the Bengaluru stampede, accusing the party of 'doing politics in everything. 'Chief Minister Siddaramaiah questioned why the BJP had not demanded the resignation of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath when a stampede occurred during the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj earlier this year.'40-50 people died in a stampede at Kumbh Mela. Did they demand the chief minister's resignation then? A bridge collapsed on the day of the inauguration, and 140 people died. Did they demand the Prime Minister's resignation then?' Siddaramaiah asked while talking to reporters here.
