Young WR talent at Miami impresses four-star Somourian Wingo

Yahoo16-04-2025

There is no lack of familiarity between Miami and in-state wide receiver target Somourian Wingo.
The St. Augustine (Fla.) High School four-star has been to campus several times this spring, including over the weekend for UM's spring game showcase.

There he saw something for the first time, a group of freshmen wide receivers making an immediate impact.
"Seeing the freshman ball stood out," Wingo told Rivals. "All the hard work is paying off. Them being first in the meetings, last to leave, it's all showing that hard work really shows you can ball and that it will pay off.
"(Malachi) Toney is setting the standard, showing what it takes to be a really good player."
The leader of the wide receiver room, coach Kevin Beard, reconnected with the in-state star in addition to others on staff while Wingo was back in Coral Gables for the second time in a few weeks.

"They always invite me and show me a lot of love," he said. "They really care, and it's a blessing to be in that position.
"The scheme is similar to my high school so when you talk about the relationships, it comes all together and matches perfect."

The battle for Wingo's commitment will feature Miami against a heavy SEC contingent, and all parties involved have penciled in official visit.

The Hurricanes will get the initial official visit, May 30, before consecutive weekends throughout SEC country. Florida hosts him June 6 before Alabama on June 13 and South Carolina on June 20.
A verbal commitment is expected at some point thereafter, though Wingo says he remains open to visits beyond the decision window.
"I'm going with the flow," he said.
It sounds like game trips will be taken independent of the productive wide receiver's verbal pledge status. The rising-senior, who notched more than 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2024, will include trips down I-95 to Hard Rock Stadium in the fall.
"I will be in Miami for multiple games," Wingo said. "The relationship I've built with these coaches has grown even stronger and I want to keep adding on to it."

Where Mark Richt, Kirby Smart rank among the 2000s top college football coaches

The Athletic released their top 25 coaches of the 21st century and the Georgia Bulldogs had two of their three coaches from the 21st century earn spots on the list. Georgia coaches have garnered 258 wins since 2000, the fifth most wins of any team in the nation behind Oklahoma, Boise State, Alabama and Ohio State. That's not to mention the amount of drafted players Georgia has had in the 21st century. Both of Georgia's highly-ranked coaches (Mark Richt and Kirby Smart) have ushered in eras of impressive growth and domination. Where Georgia Bulldogs coaches rank in The Athletic's top 25: September 29, 2007; Athens, GA, USA; Georgia Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt follows the action against the Mississippi Rebels in the fourth quarter at Sanford Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Dale Zanine USA TODAY Sports Copyright (c) 2007 Dale Zanine Record: 145-51 Richt was hired by the Georgia Bulldogs after six stellar seasons as Florida State's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. He took a Georgia team struggling to meet expectations and while he never made a national championship with Georgia, he raised the expectations tremendously. In 2007, the Bulldogs finished as the No. 2 team in the country, and in 2012, they were only five yards and potentially one play away from winning the SEC and going to the national championship. It's a shame he only coached with Georgia for two years of the College Football Playoff era. Advertisement He also earned props for his time at Miami, coaching the Hurricanes to two top-20 finishes and the No. 2 ranking at one point in 2017. "The only thing holding Richt's resume back was never winning the Big One," said Chris Vannini of the Athletic. Accomplishments: Two SEC championships, eight top-10 finishes, four BCS/NY6 appearances, 18 bowl games No. 4: Kirby Smart (2016-present) Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart gives a thumbs up Record: 109-19 It speaks to how good Kirby Smart is that the odds are in his favor to reach 100 wins in his tenure before reaching 20 losses. Kirby is the highest active coach on this list for good reason. In just eight years with Georgia, he transformed the team from perennial teases to championship contenders. He led Georgia to back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022, which is an unbelievable feat considering the history of Georgia Bulldogs football and Georgia sports in general. Advertisement His biggest flaw as a coach was usually failing to win against his old team, the Alabama Crimson Tide, and his old coach, Nick Saban. However, Smart got the best of Saban in the 2021 national championship, officially cementing him as one of the best coaches of not just the 21st century, but all time. Smart is ranked behind just Pete Carroll (No. 3), Urban Meyer (No. 2) and Nick Saban (No. 1). Where LSU football's 2026 recruiting class ranks after latest four-star addition?

LSU picked up a top prospect in its region with four-star offensive tackle Emanuel Tucker, who announced his commitment last week. The top offensive lineman out of Mississippi in 2026, Tucker, adds to the best recruiting class under head coach Brian Kelly. The group ranks atop the SEC and second nationally behind USC, according to On3's Industry Rankings. The Trojans' class contains 28 prospects, which is why they lead the country in the 2026 cycle. Should the Tigers add a few more four or five-star commitments, they could pull ahead once again. LSU has yet to add a quarterback to the group and it's pursuing Bowe Bentley hard. The four-star passer out of Celina, TX ranks No. 7 at his position and listed the Tigers, Oklahoma and Georgia as his top three. He takes official visits to each over the summer. Led by five-star prospects Tristen Keys and Richard Anderson, the Tigers built their 2026 class on keeping the best homegrown talents in the state. Seven of its commits hail from Louisiana, meaning they're less likely to listen to other programs. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle
