How to get the most out of your Social Security benefits

Yahoo03-04-2025

(NewsNation) — Social Security could put $3,000 per month in your bank account once you've reached retirement age. But how?
The simple answer: Waiting as long as possible to claim your retirement benefits. According to The Motley Fool, you need to make less than $68,500 per year to receive $3,000 per month at 70 years old.
To determine your benefit amount, Social Security uses what's called the 'primary insurance amount,' according to The Motley Fool. The agency takes your top 35 earning years and calculates an average — that is adjusted for inflation — of your monthly earnings. Then, that average is put into a formula based on the year you were born.
USPS changes begin: How could your mail be affected
For example, if you turned 62 in 2022, you would need to have an average of $9,046 per month — or right around $108,500 per year — to get a primary insurance amount of $3,000.
The primary insurance amount will decide how much you receive in benefits if you claim them at your full retirement age. This would be 67 years old for anyone born in or after 1960. But you might have to wait a bit longer if you didn't earn enough over your career to hit that $3,000 amount.
The key to getting the highest Social Security payments is waiting until full retirement age to retire. The Motley Fool suggests waiting until you are 70 years old.
You can start claiming benefits at 62 years old; however, this might not be the best option. If you claim your benefits early, you will have to take a reduction of up to 30% in each of your checks. This means if you were eligible to receive $3,000 per month at full retirement age, you could only end up receiving $2,100.
If you were to see $3,000 per month by waiting until you are 70 to claim your benefits, you would only receive $1,700 per month by claiming early.
Monthly mortgage payments soar to record high
If you visit the Social Security website and create an account, you can get an estimate of what your benefits would be at different ages.
Another way to supplement your income while on Social Security is to take advantage of the agency's Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.
SSI provides monthly payments to those who have limited income and few resources, according to Social Security. This program is designed for those who are 65 years old or older as well as anyone who is blind or has a disability.
DOGE checks? Elon Musk claims 'progress' has been made, but says it isn't his decision
If you want to receive SSI, you have to meet one of the following requirements:
Be 65 years old or older
Be totally or partially blind
Have a condition that stops you from working and is expected to last at least one year (or result in death)
As of 2025, the basic monthly payment for SSI benefits is $967 for one person and $1,450 for a couple. However, you might get more if you live in a state where money is added to the federal SSI payment.
You could also receive less money if you or your family has other income.
If you are eligible, you can apply for SSI on the Social Security website. You could be eligible to complete your application online if:
You are between 18 and 65 years old
You have never been married
You are a U.S. citizen who lives in the country or the Northern Mariana Islands
You have never applied for or received SSI benefits
You are applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) at the same time
You can also call Social Security to set up an appointment with your local office.
There has been recent concern around Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency and potential cuts to Social Security. Critics allege that the system is rife with fraud, which has caused DOGE to look closer at the agency.
'We have illegal immigrants on Social Security, and we're going to find out who they are and take them off … we're not going to stand for that,' Trump said.
Trump tariff plan could cost households thousands: Analysis
However, some have said that the level of fraud being discussed around Social Security is not happening.
'The DOGE Team is essentially engaged in a fishing expedition at SSA, in search of a fraud epidemic, based on little more than suspicion,' U.S. District Judge Ellen Hollander in Maryland wrote.
Trump claimed in February, 'Social Security will not be touched, it will only be strengthened.'

Column: Full-size electric pickups are failed product planning experiment and industry disaster

There is a statistic in my colleague Laurence Iliff's story on the failure of full-size electric pickups that, pardon the pun, shocked me. The combustion and hybrid Toyota Tundra had more new-vehicle registrations during the first quarter than the entire industry's collection of full-size electric pickups — by a lot. That statistic is in no way a brag on the Tundra, which remains a distant No. 5 in what is now a five-horse segment since the death of the even slower-selling Nissan Titan. According to S&P Global Mobility, the Tundra recorded a meager 36,895 new registrations in the U.S. in the first quarter, while the Ford F-150 Lightning, Tesla Cybertruck, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer, Rivian R1T and GMC Sierra EV collectively posted about 22,000 registrations. By comparison, combustion-powered pickups from Ford, Chevrolet, GMC and Ram reached 478,823 registrations in the first quarter, S&P said. Were it not for investments and expectations that rival the size of the immense front fascias on virtually all of the aforementioned full-size behemoths, this failed experiment would already be over. The score: Newtonian Physics ∞, Hype & Hope 0. Sign up for Automotive Views, Automotive News' weekly showcase of opinions, insights, ideas and thought leadership. I can't begin to fathom how many tens of billions of dollars were spent by automakers and their suppliers developing and building those full-size electric pickups over the last decade. You can, however, get some sense of how bad the miss was when you look at the sales/production volumes auto executives anticipated, including Elon Musk's quarter- to half-million annual sales estimate for the Cybertruck, or Ford's initial F-150 Lightning estimate of up to 150,000 sales annually. So why did full-size electric pickups fail so badly? I would argue that it wasn't just physics — though the need for a bigger, more expensive battery to push these bigger vehicles farther as long as they are not towing anything shouldn't be minimized. But I think a share of the responsibility for this collective flop also lies with the companies' product planning departments. While all vehicles are compromised in some form or fashion by the time they reach consumers, full-size electric pickups lack a fundamental quality that has made their combustion-powered counterparts the U.S. sales champs for decades: Uncompromised utility. The legacy pickups are renowned for accomplishing whatever task their owners set them to. That unstoppable capability is what gave rise to the 'lifestyle' pickup in the first place, as consumers desired at least a taste of that confidence, even if they rarely, if ever, actually needed that power. Product planners and their auto executive bosses failed to account in their sales projections for just how much compromise an electric-pickup owner would face in everyday life. Sure, the trucks have some excellent features, including loads and loads of torque, but so do their combustion counterparts. And while it may cost extra fuel to tow a trailer with those combustion-powered vehicles, a heavy trailer sucks up a battery pack's juice quickly — and recharging is not nearly as quick and convenient as a gas station fill-up. It's the same reason that battery-electric semis are probably doomed to failure: It's just the wrong technology for that use case. Sorry. In a world ruled by logic and not emotion, society would consign new technologies to the areas where they have the greatest advantage. Battery-electric powertrains make the greatest sense in vehicles with limited mass and with limited demands, while hydrogen (and diesel) is more efficient in larger, demand-dependent vehicles where towing capability is paramount. We don't live in that world, unfortunately, which is why full-size electric pickups are failing. Have an opinion about this story? Tell us about it and we may publish it in print. Tesla's China-Made EV Sales Drop Y/Y in May: Is Price War a Suspect?

Tesla's TSLA sales of China-made EVs continued to decline for the eighth consecutive month in May due to intensifying price wars in the world's largest auto market. Per the China Passenger Car Association data, combined domestic and export deliveries to Europe and other markets of the Model 3 and Model Y dropped 15% year over year in May to 61,662 units, following a drop of 6% in April. Tesla's EV sales slump persisted across much of Europe last month, primarily due to its aging lineup and the negative impact of CEO Elon Musk's political involvement on consumer boost demand in China, its largest market in the first quarter, Tesla allowed smart-assisted driving features to be transferred to new vehicles in China starting in late May and continuing through the end of June. Additionally, the Model 3 and Model Y were included in a government initiative promoting EV adoption in rural areas for the first time this year. TSLA carries a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell) at present. You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks which triggered a price war in 2023 that now involves more than 40 brands and shows no signs of easing, is under pressure from new, competitively priced EVs offering strong performance. China has called for an end to aggressive price wars, especially after BYD Company Limited BYDDY introduced new incentives on more than 20 models in late May, leading Geely Automobile Holdings Limited GELYY and Chery to adopt similar measures. BYD, Tesla's key contender, slashed the price of its cheapest model, the pure battery-powered Seagull EV, to 55,800 yuan. BYD's global passenger car sales rose 14.1% year over year in May, but the growth slowed from April's 19.4%.Geely Auto, an auto manufacturer based in Hangzhou, China, also reduced prices, offering discounts between 9,000 yuan and 16,000 yuan on selected models, such as the Xingyuan EV and entry-level Galaxy E8 sedan. Through these limited-time promotions, which ended June 1, Geely Auto aimed to stimulate sales, reduce inventory and benefit from government incentives intended to support EV transitions. Tesla has underperformed the Zacks Automotive-Domestic industry year to date. TSLA shares have lost 17.8% compared with the industry's decline of 14.8%. Going by its price/sales ratio, the company is trading at a forward sales multiple of 10.23, higher than its industry's 2.75.
