It's a dog's life watching United – time for Roy Keane and Co to join Crufts

Telegraph10-03-2025

With Manchester United going to the dogs, Roy Keane, Gary Neville and the Soccer Sunday team secure a free transfer to the Crufts TV coverage.
Dave Jones: Welcome back to Sky Crufts Super Sunday where we have seen a dramatic finish to the competition. Roy?
Roy Keane: That Bichon Frise there? Do me a favour. People clapping and cheering because it has managed to walk around the ring without barking? That's its job.
Gary Neville: That would never have happened under Sir Alex. He'd say 'walkies' and I'd be there with the leash in my mouth. And look at the Bedlington Terrier, its body language. Honestly, I think it has bottled it. The bare minimum standard has to be to sit quietly during the interview with Clare Balding and not embarrass yourself and your breed. Are you bored? Of course you are. Are you thinking about sausages? Yes, yes you probably are. But that's what is asked of you at this level: you try not to bark or wee on the sofa but no. It was too much. But I tell you something else: the real blame lies with the owners.
DJ: What about the others? Does anyone deserve a treat?
RK: One or two, maybe. But the rest of them, just so poor. If I was that Portuguese Water Dog, I'd be looking around the kennel and thinking paw on heart, who can I actually rely on here? The Shih Tzu? The Miniature Schnauzer, maybe? But these others. Babies. They're just babies.
GN: Actual puppies, some of them.
RK: It's no excuse. It's no excuse. At United, we had the older ones educating the youngsters. Becks for instance. I'd throw him a ball and he'd run and get it. Once he grasped the concept. It might have taken him a few years to really get his head around it especially if you hid it behind your back first but he got there in the end. I'm looking around at these and saying: Lads, it's the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Too easy.
DJ: Micah what did you think? Did you see any good boys out there?
Micah Richards: Ha ha ha ha dogs ha ha ha Roy ha ha ha.
DJ: Thank you Micah. Graeme [Souness], what was your reaction to the controversial incident with the Chesapeake Bay Retriever?
GS: I liked it. I don't mind seeing a bit of that. Some people will say, should it have tried to bite television presenter Radzi Chinyanganya on the backside? For me, sometimes you have to let them know you're there, you know? And, yes, other dogs did get involved, in the heat of the moment, you'd have questions maybe about the Basset Fauve de Bretagne rolling around on the floor like that. But that's the continentals for you. Sly. Many of them have fleas. It's a different time now, values have changed. I get that. Does the daytime TV audience want to see a former Blue Peter host running for his life through Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre pursued by a pack of Miniature Wire Haired Dachshunds? I don't know. I know I do. I want to see dogs. At it.
DJ: Thank you Graeme.
GS: I would bite a dog if I had to.
DJ: Okay, thanks Graeme.
RK: They can get in new owners, sure. But until these dogs actually take pride in their performances it is going to be the same story. Leopards don't change their spots. Nor do Dalmatians. They're not fit to wear the collar, and these are a million miles away from being best in show. They'd be lucky to get into a kennel at Battersea.

Frank, Iraola or Silva? Contenders to replace Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham

Postecoglou delivered Spurs' first trophy in 17 years with Europa League success over Manchester United in Bilbao, but it failed to stop chairman Daniel Levy dismissing the Australian. Here, the PA news agency takes a look at candidates to replace Postecoglou, who presided over a 17th-placed Premier League finish last season. "One of the best stories in English football" 💬 We sat down with Thomas Frank to get his review of the 2024/25 season as we secured a second top ten finish in three years ⤵️ — Brentford FC (@BrentfordFC) May 30, 2025 Thomas Frank has a fine body of work behind him after he guided Brentford to promotion in 2021, while he has developed the likes of Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo during seven years in west London. Happy to mix pragmatism and a direct style of play with attacking intent, the 51-year-old was rumoured to be on Manchester United's shortlist last summer and continues to be linked with top-six vacancies. Tottenham's current technical director Johan Lange reportedly wanted to bring Frank to Aston Villa in 2022. Bournemouth's decision to replace Gary O'Neil with Andoni Iraola in the summer of 2023 sparked criticism, but the Spaniard has been a resounding success. Last season saw the Cherries equal their best wins total in the Premier League and achieve a record points tally in the top flight. Iraola has kicked on again this term with more free-flowing football to earn an FA Cup quarter-final spot and push the club into European contention, but would he leave the south coast for north London like another coach did 11 years ago? 2024/25. 🤍 — Fulham Football Club (@FulhamFC) May 25, 2025 Another Premier League manager with a strong CV and knowhow for what it takes to thrive in English football, Marco Silva had Fulham in the battle for Europe after they also reached the last eight of the FA Cup for a second year in a row. A disappointing spell at Everton hangs over the Portuguese, who continues to be mooted for significant managerial roles around the globe. 🏆 @CPFC are your 2024-25 #EmiratesFACup winners 🏆 — Emirates FA Cup (@EmiratesFACup) May 17, 2025 Oliver Glasner was one of several coaches linked to Spurs in the summer of 2023, but no move materialised and he ended up at Crystal Palace where he has continued his cup pedigree with a historic FA Cup triumph – the club's first major trophy. Glasner, who won the Europa League with Frankfurt three years ago, prefers to use a wing-back system but has delighted the Selhurst Park faithful and helped bring out the best of Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze. Cristiano Ronaldo ‘will not be at the Club World Cup' with future still unclear

Cristiano Ronaldo has said he will not play at the upcoming Club World Cup after turning down offers from participating teams. The 40-year-old's contract with Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr, who have not qualified for the tournament in the United States, expires at the end of June. Earlier this year, FIFA president Gianni Infantino raised the prospect of Portugal captain Ronaldo joining one of the sides involved in the competition, which starts next Saturday. But speaking ahead of his country's Nations League final against Spain on Sunday evening in Munich, the forward said: 'I will not be at the Club World Cup. 'Some teams reached out to me. Some made sense and others did not, but you can't try and do everything. You can't catch every ball.' Ronaldo's club future remains unclear. He posted 'this chapter is over' on social media following Al-Nassr's final league game of the season in May. However, according to reports, he could agree a new deal to remain with the club he joined from Manchester United in 2023. Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo revealed a decision on his future was 'almost final'.

Zinedine Zidane rejected Man Utd job despite being handed blank cheque

Zinedine Zidane turned down blank cheques to join Manchester United and Chelsea as manager, according to his former France team-mate Marcel Desailly. Zidane has only ever managed Real Madrid at the first team level but remains often linked to some of the world's top jobs. The 1998 World Cup-winning midfielder won three Champions League titles in a row in his first spell with Los Blancos and won two La Liga titles across his two stints in the Bernabeu hotseat. Zidane resigned from his position in 2021 after failing to win a trophy - the first time Real Madrid had failed to do so in more than a decade - and has not managd since. And Desailly has suggested that Zidane has turned down lucrative proposals to return to football. Maintaining his current lifestyle and travelling remains important to the 52-year-old. Former Chelsea defender Desailly believes that Zidane will be the person to take over from Didier Deschamps for the French national team however. A move to the Saudi Pro League does not appear likely in the mind of the ex-Blues captain however. "Will Zinedine Zidane be tempted by Saudi Arabia? Well he had a blank cheque on the table from Chelsea and a blank cheque from Manchester United and turned them down – he isn't in it for the money," said Oddspedia. "I don't see why money will change anything, I know privately that he won't change his lifestyle. He likes to travel and always keeps an eye on the France national team. "He's ready because Didier Deschamps has started the transition. France will be one of the favourites for the World Cup and win or lose it's not the end of this era for France. "Since 2016, France have been growing and growing. New players have come into the team constantly and now they have the right players. Rayan Cherki is one of them alongside Ousmane Dembele, Kylian Mbappe is still there and on top of his game. "There is a real dynamic. William Saliba is in defence with Ibrahima Konate, Bayern have Dayot Upamecano. There is a squad and a philosophy and Zidane will know how to take that on to rebuild his own team. For another eight years at least France will be at the top level in Europe." With Zidane out of the picture, Desailly believes Manchester United should look to Luis Enrique to turnaround their fortunes. And despite Champions League success, he would not be surprised to see Enrique depart Paris Saint-Germain. " Football moves quickly and say that next season he makes too many mistakes, he might get into conflict with players like Bradley Barcola and Desire Doue as they grow and have a bigger say on the system," he said. "Soon they will be able to say no to the coach and his influence and because anything can happen, he might end up in the Premier League. "We are talking about something that didn't happen 20 years ago, but tactical coaching is now in the Premier League thanks to Claudio Ranieri and Jose Mourinho and so many other coaches. The Premier League has grown. "Luis Enrique would bring a new dynamic and if I was at Manchester United, I'd be asking Luis Enrqiue to come to my club. They have tried all kinds of coaches and now all eyes are on Enrique because he can build a philosophy from scratch. Manchester United need Luis Enrique."
