Wicked star Cynthia Erivo opens up about her 'treasured' friendship with Ariana Grande during heartfelt interview on The Project
Cynthia Erivo has opened up about her deep and meaningful friendship with pop superstar Ariana Grande during an emotional appearance on Australia's The Project on Wednesday night.
The powerhouse performer, who stars alongside Grande in the highly-anticipated Wicked film, spoke candidly about the trust and creative connection they've built behind the scenes.
'I really appreciate and treasure her opinion,' Cynthia said when asked about her bond with Ariana.
'I trust her – like what she hears, I trust it. If I'm like, 'Oh, I'm not sure about this,' I'll send it to her and ask, 'Have a listen to this, what do you think?' Because not many people are made like her.'
Erivo went on to say the two artists share a rare understanding of one another, especially when it comes to their creativity.

'She understands how I'm made. I understand how she's made musically and creatively. So to be able to share some of that work has been really, really wonderful actually. She's one of a kind,' Cynthia said.
Their close friendship blossomed while filming the two-part movie adaptation of the Broadway hit Wicked, in which Cynthia plays Elphaba and Ariana portrays Glinda.
Elsewhere in the interview, the Oscar-nominated actress reflected on self-growth and the importance of setting boundaries in both personal and professional life.
'Self-advocacy starts with knowing who you are – not in anyone else's eyes, but your own,' she shared.
'Then there's the scary thing of going, 'I think there are some relationships I need to let go of.' Becoming brave enough to make the changes you need in your life to get what you want – not just in your work or creativity, but also in the people you allow around you.'
Cynthia's insight comes just months before Universal Pictures dropped the first trailer for Wicked: For Good.
The sequel will hit cinemas on November 21, with a first look at the movie conclusion of the Broadway hit teasing the fate of the protagonists and a first look at new characters.
The sequel follows Elphaba and Glinda's friendship after Elphaba was banished from Oz.

Yet behind the scenes, Glinda is attempting to reconcile Elphaba and The Wizard, which only results in her being drawn further apart from her friend.
As a result Boq (Ethan Slater) and Fiyero are set to be changed forever, while the safety of Elphaba's sister, Nessarose (Marissa Bode) comes into question.
Just as tensions in Oz reach an all time high, a girl from Kansas comes crashing into all their lives.
Fans went wild at the first glimpse of Dorothy - who was seen walking along the yellow brick road with the Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and Scarecrow.

Wicked fans have gone wild after the trailer for part two of the musical was released last week, with triple Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo opening up on her friendship with co-star Ariana Grande Wicked star Cynthia Erivo has revealed how Ariana Grande persuaded her to follow her dreams and become a popstar - unlike her first career choice to become a surgeon. Speaking as the trailer for Wicked: For Good is released, giving fans a taste of what to expect in part two of the musical, Cynthia - who plays green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West Elphaba - will be releasing her second album, I Forgive You on June 27. The triple Oscar nominee, who has won Grammy, Emmy and Tony awards, says of her pal and Wicked co-star Ariana: 'At the very beginning when we were doing rehearsals, that's when I sort of decided that, okay, time to write this album. Coaxed by Ariana because she wouldn't let me get away with it!' Wicked was the box office hit of the winter, surpassing Mamma Mia! and taking over $750 million worldwide - catapulting Cynthia to fame. Singing with Ariana on the chart-topping soundtrack to the film, which shot to number one in the UK album charts, critics praised Cynthia's powerful vocals and emotional acting. Yet the star originally wanted to be a surgeon, not a singer. She says:' I decided I wanted to be a spinal surgeon, randomly. Because I was good at biology and I was starting to get the hang of it. 'I was one of those kids that was good at reading, good at doing all those things and good at class work, but I could also sing. So my left and right brain were sort of like, doing a battle.' But music won the war. 'I started enjoying singing when I was about eleven,' Cynthia tells Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett on the Dish from Waitrose podcast. 'Music was in my household all the time. My mum would sing along to everything and it would end up being a family sing along. 'My sister and I would sing together while we were doing the dishes. I think I was about fourteen and I was like,' oh, I think I wanna do this. And then I changed my mind randomly when I was about sixteen, because there were no performers in my class.' But when she embarked on a musical career, she received advice from high places - with Oprah Winfrey going out of her way to be helpful. Cynthia says: 'I have had advice from Oprah before, which is really nice. 'Right at the very beginning of my career, I was saying yes to absolutely everything. She was the one that was like, 'You should say no sometimes.' ''It's really good to say no. Sometimes you need to leave space for yourself'. So I took that to heart and began to really be discerning about what I said yes to.' Born to Nigerian parents and growing up in Stockwell, south London, Cynthia has now finished filming for the second Wicked movie - which is out in November - apart from a couple of re-shoots, and would like to star in more films. 'I hope I get the chance to do the things that I'm wishing for - more film, more TV, more music. I hope to get to do a little tour. 'In my head I've been dreaming of doing some of the biggest stages in the world.' Already receiving shining reviews, her new album, I Forgive You, which opens with a cover of No More I Love Yous - a tribute to her hero Annie Lennox - it is a mainly original and deeply personal exploration of romantic relationships. 'The good parts of the relationship, bad parts of a relationship, new relationships, letting go, saying goodbye, and forgiving both parties, yourself and, and the other person,' she says. David Attenborough tells Prince William he nearly drowned while scuba-diving in 1950s
Sir David Attenborough almost drowned when testing a scuba-diving helmet for his 1957 dive on the Great Barrier Reef, the broadcasting veteran has revealed in a discussion with Prince William. Discussing his latest documentary, Ocean, the pioneering film-maker described the incident to the Prince of Wales. 'It's certainly a strange thing to do,' said the 99-year-old Attenborough, as he nostalgically fitted an original version of Jacques-Yves Cousteau's open-circuit scuba helmet over his head. 'Don't do that, David,' laughed the prince. 'You won't get it off.' Successfully wriggling out of the helmet, Attenborough reminisced. 'When I put mine on for the first time, I suddenly felt water coming around [my chin and up over my mouth]' he said. 'I thought, 'This can't be right'. And by the time [the water rose to my nose], I thought, 'I'm sure this is not right'. 'But then, of course, if you got this thing screwed on top of you, you can't breathe. You can't even make yourself heard, you know: 'Get it off me!'' he added. Attenborough related how a testy director of operations refused to believe the equipment had a fault. 'So he put it on and I'm happy to say he went under the water and came up even quicker than I did ('Blimey', interjected the prince), because there was actually a fault.' Ocean, Attenborough's new National Geographic documentary special, confronts the enormity of the loss in ocean life. It will become available for streaming globally on Saturday 8 June, World Ocean's Day. In the film with the prince, publicising the documentary's release, Sir David describes how the world knew very little about the intricacies of life in our oceans when he took his first dive. Attenborough spoke of how the experience was a 'sensory overload'. But now, he said, the same dive in Australia's shallow warm water cay is likely to look disastrously worse: globally, corals have suffered tremendous loss as a result of human-caused ocean warming. 'Dave, from what you've obviously seen over the years, what states would you say the oceans were in right now?' asked the prince in the film, which will shortly be posted on Kensington Palace social media platforms. 'The awful thing is that it's hidden from you and from me and most people,' replied Attenborough. 'The thing which I was appalled by when I first saw the shots taken for this film, is that what we have done to the deep ocean floor is just unspeakably awful. 'I mean, if you did anything remotely like it on land, everybody would be up in arms,' he said. 'If this film does anything – if it just shifts public awareness – it'll be very, very important, and I only hope that people who see it will recognise that something must be done before we destroy this great treasure.'
