40 East Coast Public University Students, Staff Kayak 22km Flying Jalur Gemilang
Prof Dr Mohd Izani Mohd Zain, deputy vice-chancellor for Student Affairs and Alumni (HEPA) at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), said the UMT Merdeka Kayak Expedition 2025 saw participants paddling from Pantai INOS UMT to Pasir Tenggara, Pulau Bidong, a journey taking six to eight hours.
'Besides UMT, participating universities include Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK). Although Pulau Bidong appears close, reaching it by kayak requires considerable time and effort,' he said.
'It requires patience and persistence. Through this expedition, we aim to convey, in conjunction with National Day, the spirit and struggle of the previous generation in securing the independence and peace we enjoy today,' he told reporters at Pantai INOS, UMT, here today.
He added that the expedition is also intended to inspire young people to value the spirit of independence and to continue striving to preserve the prosperity the country now enjoys.
He said the programme, which also seeks to raise student and community awareness of environmental sustainability, was last held several years ago in conjunction with the National Day celebrations, and there are plans to make it an annual event.
The participants, who paddled 20 kayaks, were accompanied by five escort boats from the UMT Sailing Training Centre, the UMT Health Centre, and the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department.
In addition, he said that to ensure the readiness and safety of the participants, they had undergone basic kayaking training conducted by UMT on Tuesday and Wednesday.
One of the participants, Nur Muhammad Aqil Nazri, 22, said the programme reflected the spirit of unity among public universities in celebrating National Day.

Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari added to Sarawak tourism calendar from 2026
MUKAH: The Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari will be officially included in Sarawak's tourism calendar starting next year. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this move aims to position the event as a major attraction for international anglers. He highlighted the event's role in strengthening Tanjung Manis' contribution to the state's second wave of economic development. 'Recognition at the state level will enable more structured planning and at the same time allow international participants to prepare earlier,' he said. Abang Johari spoke at the closing ceremony of the Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari at the Tanjung Manis Express Terminal. He noted that fishing, golf, and marathons could elevate Tanjung Manis' global profile. The state government has invested RM70 million in artificial reefs from Telok Melano to Lawas. These reefs aim to boost fish breeding and protect local waters from foreign trawlers. Abang Johari stressed the need for stricter enforcement and Sarawak Coast Guard support to safeguard marine resources. Tanjung Manis will be a key focus in Sarawak's second-wave development, integrating food security, tourism, and carbon economy initiatives. Plans include expanding the local airport to accommodate larger aircraft. Belawai will be developed as a coastal tourism hub with hotels, homestays, and a golf course. Ecotourism will also be strengthened to attract more visitors. From next year, AirBorneo will operate flights bringing tourists from Korea and Japan. This is expected to boost the local economy through food, cultural, and nature-based tourism. A total of 146 anglers participated in the safari, competing in deep-sea and coastal fishing categories. - Bernama

He said this is in line with efforts to strengthen Tanjung Manis' role in the second wave of the state's economic development. Excitement At SPCT As Thousands Visit ASEAN Naval Ships
GEORGE TOWN, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- The atmosphere at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) was vibrant today, as thousands of visitors eagerly took the chance to board naval ships from ASEAN countries. The event, part of the ASEAN Navies' City Parade (ANCP) and the 4.0 Bulletin Day celebration organised by the state government, attracted a diverse crowd, including families, school students, and military enthusiasts. They were thrilled to explore the advanced maritime defence assets from across the region. For retired Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) personnel Mohd Fauzi Bakar, 68, today's experience was especially meaningful. Despite serving for 21 years, he had never been on a foreign warship. 'ASEAN has some highly advanced ships with a wide range of weaponry, comparable to Malaysia's assets. Boarding these ships gives the public a unique experience,' he told Bernama after exploring the ASEAN naval ships at SPCT here today. S. Lajelen, 19, a student from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Hutchings here, shared his excitement about witnessing the military technology of ASEAN countries, particularly their weaponry systems. 'My friends and I are thrilled. This is the first time we've been on such advanced ships. We've never even boarded our own country's ships, so this is a unique opportunity,' he said. Rachel Teh, 35, a private-sector employee, also found the visit to the warships memorable, especially after seeing them from afar at Padang Kota in the past few days. 'This is my first time exploring a naval warship up close. I'm amazed by the onboard technology, and this experience certainly boosts our patriotism,' she said.
