Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs) Prof Dr Mohd Izani Mohd Zain said the UMT Merdeka Kayak Expedition 2025 saw participants paddling from Pantai Inos UMT to Pasir Tenggara, Pulau Bidong, a 22km journey which took the participants about six to eight hours to complete. Aside from UMT, participating universities included Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK). 'Although Pulau Bidong appears close, reaching it by kayak requires considerable time and effort. 'It requires patience and persistence. Through this expedition, we aim to convey, in conjunction with National Day, the spirit and struggle of our forefathers in securing the independence and peace we enjoy today,' he told reporters, Bernama reported. Mohd Izani said the expedition also aimed to inspire young people to value the spirit of independence and to continue striving to preserve the prosperity the country now enjoys. He said the programme seeks to raise student and community awareness on environmental sustainability. There are plans to make this an annual event. The participants, in 20 kayaks, were escorted by five escort boats from the UMT sailing training centre, the UMT health centre and the Fire and Rescue Department. One of the participants, Nur Muhammad Aqil Nazri, 22, said the programme reflected the spirit of unity among public universities in celebrating National Day. 'It is proof of our solidarity in demonstrating our love for our country,' said the second-year student of UMT's faculty of maritime studies and marine sciences. UMK faculty of entrepreneurship and business student Nur Ileeya Mysara Kamal Bashah, 22, said although this was her first long-distance kayaking experience, she remained enthusiastic about completing the expedition. 'I hope this programme will be held again next year. My three friends and I would love to join again,' said the third-year student.

East coast students kayak 22km flying Jalur Gemilang for Merdeka

KUALA NERUS: Forty students and staff from east coast public universities kayaked 22 kilometres to Pulau Bidong today, proudly flying the Jalur Gemilang. The UMT Merdeka Kayak Expedition 2025 aimed to boost patriotic spirit ahead of National Day on August 31. Participants paddled from Pantai INOS UMT to Pasir Tenggara, Pulau Bidong, a journey lasting six to eight hours. Prof Dr Mohd Izani Mohd Zain, UMT deputy vice-chancellor, said the expedition included students from UMPSA and UMK. He noted that kayaking to Pulau Bidong, though seemingly close, demands significant time and effort. The event symbolised the struggles of past generations in securing Malaysia's independence and peace. It also aimed to inspire youth to cherish and preserve the nation's prosperity. The programme, last held years ago, may become an annual event to promote environmental awareness. Twenty kayaks were accompanied by five escort boats for safety and support. Participants underwent basic kayaking training earlier this week to ensure readiness. Nur Muhammad Aqil Nazri, a UMT student, said the event showcased unity among universities. He described it as proof of young people's love for the country. UMK student Nur Ileeya Mysara Kamal Bashah called the experience challenging but rewarding. She hopes to join again next year with her friends. The expedition highlighted both patriotism and environmental sustainability efforts. - Bernama

BN Candidate's Win In Ayer Kuning By-election No Surprise

Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir when he was announced as the winner of the Ayer Kuning state by-election (PRK) at Dewan Merdeka Tapah last night. KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 (Bernama) -- The victory of Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir in the Ayer Kuning state by-election yesterday was expected and not surprising, said a political analyst. Universiti Malaysia Terengganu deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Dr Mohd Izani Mohd Zain said BN's victory gave a clear picture of the current political situation in the state, which shows good cooperation between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and BN. "This result is what we expected because Ayer Kuning is a traditional UMNO stronghold. We expected them to win… BN had the advantage and could win comfortably because of the votes of PH supporters. "We see the political landscape in Perak as a very unique situation because the political collaboration between BN and PH is extremely good and this was reflected in the Ayer Kuning by-election. We also saw a very mature political election because there were no hot issues, instead only local issues have coloured the polemics and election campaign,' he said. He said this as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara programme titled "Analisis Keputusan PRK Ayer Kuning' (Analysis of Ayer Kuning By-Election Result) last night. BN retained the Ayer Kuning seat when its candidate, Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir secured victory in the three-cornered fight with a 5,006-vote majority. The Tapah UMNO Division secretary, also known as Ustaz Yusri, garnered 11,065 votes to defeat Abd Muhaimin Malek of Perikatan Nasional (PN), who scored 6,059 votes and Bawani KS of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), who obtained only 1,106 votes. Meanwhile, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Political Science senior lecturer Mujibu Abd Muis said there is a need for all parties to view the consistently low voter turnout in the past few by-elections as a serious issue. "Whatever happens in the context of a by-election, we must find a way to get voters to be more excited about them (by-elections) and view it as their civic duty (to go out and vote),' he said.
