Lost RCMP memory key with informant details was offered for sale by criminals: report
OTTAWA — The federal privacy watchdog says the RCMP lost a memory key containing personal information about victims, witnesses and informants, and later learned it was being offered for sale by criminals.
A detailed report from the office of privacy commissioner Philippe Dufresne reveals the RCMP told the watchdog about the breach in March 2022, prompting a lengthy investigation.
The probe found that the unencrypted USB storage device contained the personal information of 1,741 people, including witnesses, complainants, subjects of interest, informants, police officers and civilian employees.
The privacy commissioner says an RCMP detachment learned from a confidential source three weeks after the loss that the data on the device was being offered for sale by members of the criminal community.
The privacy watchdog recommended the RCMP adopt strict security measures for the use of USB storage devices, given the sensitive nature of the personal information police handle daily.
The commissioner says the Mounties agreed in principle to the recommendations but did not commit to implementing them within a specific timeline.

Niagara police have made an arrest after a man with a dog allegedly exposed himself to a female on a trail in Welland on Monday afternoon. The female was walking along the Steve Bauer Trail near Woodlawn Road and Clare Avenue at around 5:15 p.m. when she first came into contact with an unknown male and his dog. The first case took place July 28 on Cathcart Street when a 911 call reported a theft in progress. 'Although the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, an investigation revealed the accused had broken into a victim's residence and put several of their belongings into bags to steal them before they were confronted by the victim,' Sault police said in a news release Tuesday. 'Officers also located property reported stolen from the 100 block of Dennis Street two days prior. The accused and the victims are not known to one another. All found property was returned to the victims.' Theft in progress Then at 4:20 p.m. on Monday, a 911 call reported a theft in progress at a residence on Huron Street. 'Officers were dispatched to the scene and located the accused hiding inside the residence,' police said. 'An investigation revealed the accused had broken into the residence by damaging property and put several of the victim's belongings into bags and into their pockets to steal them.' Charges include three counts of violating probation, two counts each of theft and break and enter, and one count each of mischief under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Fentanyl trafficking investigation leads to seizure of two loaded guns
A quantity of illicit drugs and two firearms seized as part of a Toronto Police Service investigation into drug trafficking is shown. (Toronto Police Service) Police have arrested a 38-year-old man who they say was trafficking fentanyl and other illegal drugs throughout the City of Toronto. Officers with the Toronto Police Drug Squad, with the assistance of the Toronto Police Emergency Task Force, executed a search warrant at a residence in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue area on Aug. 14. Police say that the suspect was taken into custody at the time. Police also seized a number of items from the property, including a loaded handgun, ammunition, a quantity of cocaine and a large amount of currency. Police say that a second search of a motor vehicle then led to the seizure of another loaded gun, along with a quantity of fentanyl, crack cocaine and cocaine. John Mensah, 38, of Toronto, has been charged with 20 offences, including possession of a loaded restricted firearm. Police continue to investigate and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
