KPT raises RM1.7m for UPSI bus tragedy victims' aid
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the funds collected were contributions from 40 public and private higher learning institutions which included polytechnics and community colleges, as well as contributions from various other sources such as state government agencies, financial institutions and corporate bodies.
He said the special fund, managed by UPSI, will be distributed to recipients in stages and that so far, RM371,000 from the total RM1.7 million has already been disbursed to affected students and their families.
'The RM1.7 million will be given to the families of the victims, and I leave it to the secretariat led by the UPSI Vice-Chancellor (Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff) to manage the fund.
'The higher learning institutions have mobilised their students, staff, and others to contribute,' he told reporters after the Tahlil Perdana ceremony for the bus tragedy victims at Dewan Tuanku Canselor UPSI here on Monday (June 16) night.
Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, and Perak Education, Higher Education, Youth, and Sports Committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah.
Zambry also donate a month's salary of his ministership to the fund, demonstrating solidarity with the compassion shown by Malaysians.
Meanwhile, Md Amin said the KPT Prihatin Fund, is expected to close this Friday.
'Once we conclude the donation drive, the remaining funds will be given directly to the families. Thank you to everyone for your support. We aim to finalise this process within the week,' he said.
UPSI's Corporate Communications Division said the Tahlil ceremony attracted some 5,000 students, staff members and residents.
At the event, Zambry also received mock cheques from contributing parties, including participating universities and corporations such as Syarikat Takaful Malaysia, Malaysian Takaful Association, Lumut Port, Etiqa Takaful, Hong Leong Takaful, and several banking institutions.
In the June 9 incident, 15 UPSI students were killed when a chartered bus ferrying them from Jertih, Terengganu, to their main campus in Tanjong Malim, Perak, was involved in an accident with a Perodua Alza MPV along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik.
The crash also injured 33 others, including the bus driver and assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the MPV.

National Education Council to hold first conference in fourth quarter 2024
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Education Council (MPN) scheduled for establishment this year will convene its first conference during the fourth quarter to advance the national education reform agenda. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir confirmed the council's formation under the new Malaysian Higher Education Policy 2025-2030 framework. 'MPN aims to coordinate the country's education policy comprehensively across various levels, namely early childhood education, higher education and lifelong education, in other words, it involves two main ministries, namely the Ministry of Education (KPM) and the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT).' He announced during the parliamentary winding-up session that relevant ministries will prepare a cabinet memorandum for formal presentation. The council will serve as Malaysia's highest education committee chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. MPN membership will extend beyond education ministries to include the Ministry of Human Resources, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. The council will also incorporate non-governmental organisations, communities and experts from within and outside the country, given that issues related to education involve the entire ecosystem. Zambry proposed including the Special Select Committee on Nation-Building, Education and Human Resources Development chaired by Indera Mahkota MP in the council structure. 'This council needs to cross-party for the sake of the interests and future well-being of our country,' he emphasised. Separately, Zambry guaranteed placement opportunities for excellent students with disabilities allegedly denied admission to public universities. He confirmed that disabled students achieving excellent 4A results remain eligible for public higher education institution placements despite university facility limitations. 'We need to change university policies which must be more inclusive of OKU. Therefore, the application involving this 4A disabled student, God willing, he will get his place later.' The minister referenced Aniq, a disabled student with a 3.83 matriculation CGPA who met all programme requirements but faced system accessibility issues. Zambry reiterated that public university intake policies must prioritise local students before considering international applicants. 'For example, the number of UPUs required for a university is so many, then the quota is filled first and if there is a surplus in terms of the capacity of the university concerned, then it will be opened (to the intake of international students) according to the policy that we have been implementing since 1996.' He revealed that 497,000 Malaysian students pursued higher education at public universities last year compared to 13,000 international undergraduate students. In another development, Zambry assured that excellent students with disabilities (OKU) who were allegedly denied the right to apply for admission to public universities (UA) will still be offered places at public higher education institutions (IPTA). He said that although the university stated that there were no OKU-friendly facilities as a reason for rejection, the students involved obtained excellent 4A results and are eligible to continue their studies. 'We need to change university policies which must be more inclusive of OKU. Therefore, the application involving this 4A disabled student, God willing, he will get his place later,' he said.
