Jim Cramer isn't impressed with Apple's stock buybacks — Saylor offers a fix
Jim Cramer isn't impressed with Apple's stock buybacks — Saylor offers a fix originally appeared on TheStreet. CNBC's 'Mad Money' host and veteran market commentator Jim Cramer is not impressed with Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) repurchasing its stocks of late. With a market cap of $3 trillion, Apple is the third-largest company in the world that is well-known for its flagship tech products such as iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, etc. The tech giant has executed sizeable stock buybacks over the past few years. On May 1, the company announced its plan to repurchase up to $100 billion of its stock. In 2024, it had bought back AAPL stocks worth $110 billion — the largest stock buyback in U.S. history. In 2018, the company repurchased stocks worth $100 billion. Past buybacks include $75 billion in 2019, $50 billion in 2020, and $90 billion each in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Cramer thinks the buyback strategy isn't working for Apple: "It is not a badge of dishonor. It just isn't" Well, the analyst isn't entirely wrong. Though the AAPL stock has surged 236% over the last five years, 2025 has hardly been a kind year for it. The stock has declined nearly 20% in value year-to-date and was trading at $201.55 at press time. Bitcoin advocate Michael Saylor didn't miss the opportunity to recommend the same investment advice to Apple that his business intelligence firm, Strategy (Nasdaq: MSTR), has been following since 2020. He wrote: Apple should buy Bitcoin. Strategy is the largest public corporate Bitcoin holder and co-founder Saylor often encourages other companies to follow the same acquisition plan as Strategy. Elon Musk's automotive and clean energy company Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) and Metaplanet (Tokyo: 3350.T) are among other prominent public holders of Bitcoin. Bitcoin, which the likes of Saylor have been counting on to earn impressive rewards, was trading at $109,635.11 at press time, as per Kraken. Bitcoin climbs as companies increasingly use tokens to 'hedge against inflation'
Bitcoin (BTC-USD) climbed toward a new high on Tuesday as investors continue to bet on the Trump administration's friendly stance toward the crypto industry and companies increasingly add the token to their balance sheets. As of 1 pm ET, the token was trading just below $109,000, roughly $3,000 away from touching its all-time intraday high in May. Greater adoption of the token has been driven in part by dozens of public companies getting on the bitcoin bandwagon. "Over time, bitcoin has proven itself to be a better hedge against inflation than many other asset classes," said Elliot Johnson, CEO of Bitcoin Treasury Corp., an advisory firm that helps companies acquire and hold bitcoin as part of their balance sheets. Johnson points out over the past five years, bitcoin is up over 1,000% while gold has returned about 92.5%. "Meanwhile, the US dollar has lost more than 20% of its value over the last five years due to inflation," said Johnson. However, the strategy spearheaded by Strategy and copied by dozens of companies, carries risks. 'The main risk in running a leveraged 'bitcoin treasury' strategy is that a rapid drop in the price of bitcoin would lead to a possibility of bankruptcy,' NYU Stern School of Business professor David Yermack told Yahoo Finance in a recent interview. On Monday, shares of bitcoin juggernaut Strategy (MSTR) jumped more than 4% after the company said it purchased 1,045 more tokens from June 2 to June 8, with total holdings now worth more than $62 billion, according to Bloomberg data. But 'MSTR's scale is hard to replicate,' Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani wrote in a May note. 'Not every Bitcoin treasury will be successful simply replicating MSTR's playbook, in our view.' Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT) shares fell more than 10% during one session in May after the Trump-backed company announced plans to create what it claims will be one of the largest bitcoin treasuries held by any public company. GameStop (GME) stock also slid nearly 25% immediately after the company announced in March it would raise $1.3 billion to buy bitcoin. Around 80 companies have adopted the so-called "bitcoin standard" by adding the token to their balance sheets. Corporates now hold roughly 3.4% of all tokens in circulation, according to Bernstein analysis. "Bitcoin is great, we love it and still believe $200K is our high-conviction but conservative price forecast this cycle," wrote Bernstein's Chhugan on Monday. The cryptocurrency is up more than 55% since President Trump, who promised a crypto-friendly framework, was elected last November. Trump's first order of business when he reentered the White House included the placement of a crypto-friendly advocate to head the Securities and Exchange Commission, and appointing a crypto-czar. Legislation in the Congress — which if passed, would regulate stablecoins, or digital assets backed by the US dollar — has lifted optimism over the crypto space. Senate Republicans are aiming to pass the bill this week. Bitcoin held above $100,000 for 30 consecutive days — even with a 10% pullback — for the first time ever
Bitcoin just completed a significant test above the $100,000 level for the first time. The cryptocurrency had been backsliding since reaching its all-time high on May 22 , falling 10% to $100,428 by Friday. Buyers stepped in over the weekend, propping it up to $105,000. On Monday bitcoin shot back up to $110,000 on traders' optimism about U.S.-China trade talks making progress . Bitcoin has now held above the $100,000 for more than 30 days in a row for the first time ever. (It last fell below that level on May 8.) The milestone may be seen as a psychological hurdle by many, but it is nevertheless a positive indication for the digital asset. 1M mountain Bitcoin (BTC) has held above $100,000 for 30 days in a row for the first time "Anytime price is able to punch through a major resistance level, whether psychological or historical, and successfully hold, it is certainly a bullish sign," Read Harvey, technical analyst at Wolfe Research, told CNBC. "What really stood out to us was price's ability to hold that level on the back test, when it briefly fell to $100,000 on Thursday. It also happened to align perfectly with the 50-day moving average. … We feel this should act as a launching pad back towards the recent highs of $112,000." He also said to expect another brief consolidation around the record before a breakout to new highs. 'A new floor' Ben Kurland, CEO at crypto research and charting platform DYOR, said $100,000 "isn't just speculative froth" now but "a new floor being tested and held by institutional flows, ETF inflows, and a maturing investor base ." "The era of short-lived rallies and quick retracements is giving way to structural support ," he said. "We're likely in the foothills of bitcoin's next climb." Sustained consolidation around all-time high levels usually sets bitcoin up for the next leg higher, he said, adding that "if $100,000 is the new base, $120,000-$130,000 becomes the next logical zone — especially as macro conditions stabilize and sidelined capital seeks asymmetric upside." Sales by long-term holders Tyrone Ross, founder and president of registered investment advisor 401 Financial, said even though bitcoin's 30 days above $100,000 represents a more psychological barrier than a technical feat, that could still help drive the coin higher. "On-chain data shows long-term holders are selling," Ross pointed out. "ETF and corporates buying is strong, but retail has yet to come back. So the longer bitcoin stays above $100,000, [it] will start to be a magnet for retail interest." Bitcoin saw a surge in spending by long-term holders (those who have held onto their coins for six months or longer) on May 27, when bitcoin was trading at about $109,000, according to the crypto data provider CryptoQuant. Spending has decreased from about 40,000 bitcoin at the time to 6,000 Monday. In the same period, bitcoin's 30-day demand has slowed to 126,000 bitcoin from 228,000, which could potentially reduce the pace of price gains, Julio Moreno, head of research at CryptoQuant, explained. On Tuesday, bitcoin was trading at about $108,800, about 3% below its record. Earlier in the day, it rose as high as $110,500, its highest level since the all-time high. —CNBC's Nick Wells contributed reporting.
