Create a Portfolio of Passive Income: 3 High-Yielding Dividend Stocks That Pay More Than 5%
Dividend income offers a great way to strengthen your overall financial position. It can potentially make you less dependent on the income you earn from a job, maybe even allowing you to work less or retire earlier than planned. Money doesn't buy happiness, but being less dependent on work to fund your lifestyle could be a contributor to a happier, less stressful life. A great way to build up dividend income is to invest in high-yielding dividend stocks that also happen to be lower-risk investments. Pfizer (NYSE: PFE), Realty Income (NYSE: O), and Bank of Nova Scotia (NYSE: BNS) are three attractive investments that you'll want to consider if you want to create a strong portfolio of income-generating stocks. Pfizer If you're looking for a high-yielding stock to hold for the long term, Pfizer is one you'll want to strongly consider. At 7.4%, its yield right now is more than five times what you'd get with the average stock on the S&P 500, which pays about 1.3%. Pfizer's stock is trading down more than 10% this year (as of the end of last week), as it can't seem to catch a break. While its valuation is modest -- it trades at 17 times its trailing earnings -- concerns about healthcare reform and the company's future growth prospects have made investors uneasy about the business and investing in it. But the healthcare company is still doing well and is on track to hit its guidance, which calls for revenue between $61 billion and $64 billion this year (comparable to how it did last year). It is also slashing costs to improve its bottom line. And it has been less than two years since it acquired oncology company Seagen, which may unlock more long-term growth for Pfizer in the future. Last year, the company also obtained approval from regulators for its first gene therapy in the U.S. -- Beqvez, a treatment for a genetic bleeding disorder. There's some uncertainty and risk with Pfizer, but there are opportunities as well. And at such a modest valuation, now can be an excellent time to add it to your portfolio. Pfizer has been a big name in healthcare for decades, and I don't think that's likely to change anytime soon. Realty Income One dividend stock I think all income investors should consider owning is Realty Income. This is a real estate investment trust (REIT) that not only offers a high yield of 5.8%, but it also pays a dividend every month. There's no need to wait around for multiple months, as is the case with other dividend stocks; with Realty Income, you're getting a much more regular stream of cash flow. The REIT has a diverse mix of tenants, which makes it an ideal option for long-term investors. It's diversified across industries and geographies, with more than 1,500 clients across 91 industries. The dividend remains well supported -- the REIT reported funds from operations (FFO) per share of $1.05 during the first three months of the year (versus $0.94 a year ago). That averages out to $0.35 per share per month, which is higher than the rate of its monthly dividend of $0.2685. REITs use FFO to assess how much they can afford to pay in dividends, and with Realty Income's financials looking solid, there aren't any significant risks with its payout. Share prices of Realty Income are up 5% this year, and this can be a great income-generating investment to add to your portfolio for the long haul. Bank of Nova Scotia Rounding out this list of high-yielding dividend stocks is Canada-based Bank of Nova Scotia, also known as Scotiabank. At around 6%, that's a high payout for a top bank stock that is known for long-term stability. It declared its first dividend back in 1833 and has continued making regular payments since then. The bank increased its provision for credit losses in its most recent quarter, in a sign of growing concern about macroeconomic conditions. Scotiabank's net income totaled over $2 billion Canadian dollars for the period ending April 30, which was nearly identical to its bottom line in the prior-year period. There are concerns about how the Canadian economy may perform in the near future due to tariffs, but in the grand scheme of things, that may prove to be a short-term concern for investors who are willing to hang on for years. Scotiabank's impressive track record and resilience over the years should inspire some confidence in the business. The bank stock has increased its dividend by more than 22% in four years and can be an excellent option to hang on to for the long term. Not only can you collect a high yield today, but the dividend income you get from this investment can rise over the years. Should you invest $1,000 in Pfizer right now? 1 Warren Buffett Stock to Buy Hand Over Fist in June
Warren Buffett is the incredibly successful CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A)(NYSE: BRK.B). The stocks his company owns tend to receive plenty of extra attention from investors who want to mimic his investment approach (and match the level of returns Berkshire manages). There's a dichotomy today in the energy sector, in which Buffett owns two very different energy stocks. Which of these energy stocks is the better option for your portfolio? Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More » What does Warren Buffett do? Warren Buffett is the CEO of a company that is run more like a mutual fund than a business. In fact, the conglomerate owns around 200 companies if you include both controlled businesses and publicly traded stocks in the mix. The real key here, however, is that Buffett doesn't tend to get into the day-to-day operations of the businesses in which he's invested. Like a mutual fund manager, Buffett buys companies when he thinks they are attractively priced. Then he lets the management team run them, only stepping in if asked or when there is a dire need for his input (notably poor performance, for example). Mostly, he just sits back and benefits from the long-term growth of the businesses in which Berkshire is invested. Buffett's investment approach is important to understand if you are going to use his portfolio as a starting point for your own stock selections. But his penchant for owning stocks for the long term means the current list isn't necessarily filled with stocks you should buy today. That said, the energy sector is a little out of favor right now, so there are potential bargains to be had. Two potential examples are Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY) and Chevron (NYSE: CVX). Slow and steady is probably your best bet Occidental Petroleum is an interesting story because Buffett helped the energy company outbid Chevron for Anadarko Petroleum a few years ago. That purchase ended up being a big stretch for Oxy, as it is more commonly known. When oil prices fell during the coronavirus pandemic, a highly leveraged balance sheet led Oxy to cut its dividend. The dividend is still below where it was prior to the cut. Oxy is very clearly focused on growing its business and has inked several more acquisitions now that its finances are in better shape. This is a stock that more aggressive investors will find attractive. Chevron, on the other hand, is a rock in the normally turbulent energy seas. In 2020, it raised its dividend. During the Great Recession, it raised its dividend. During the dot-com crash, it raised its dividend. It has raised its dividend annually for 38 consecutive years. Oil and natural gas prices are incredibly volatile, but Chevron has built a business that can survive through the entire energy cycle while still rewarding investors with reliable dividends along the way. There are two big foundational stories here. First, Chevron is one of the world's largest integrated energy companies. It has exposure to the entire energy value chain, allowing it to move its business around in ways that maximize long-term returns for shareholders. Second, it has a very strong balance sheet, which allows it to take on debt during downturns to support its business and dividend. When energy prices recover, as they always have before, it reduces leverage. It is the kind of energy company that even the most conservative investor can love. Chevron has an attractive yield Right now, the energy sector is a bit unloved on Wall Street because energy prices have been a little weak. That makes the sector an interesting one for investors to consider. Chevron is out of favor within the energy sector because of a difficult acquisition that it is trying to complete and because of its investments in Venezuela, which have become a bit of a political football. Neither issue is likely to derail the company over the long term. However, they have helped to push Chevron's yield up to around 5%. If you are a dividend investor looking at energy stocks, this Buffett pick is worth buying in June. Should you invest $1,000 in Chevron right now? Before you buy stock in Chevron, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Chevron wasn't one of them. The 10 stocks that made the cut could produce monster returns in the coming years. Prediction: Nvidia Stock Is Going to Hit $200 in 2025
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) stock has soared by 870% since the start of 2023, catapulting its market capitalization to a whopping $3.5 trillion. Demand continues to exceed supply for the company's graphics processing units (GPUs) for the data center, which are the most powerful chips in the world for developing artificial intelligence (AI) models. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says new AI reasoning models, which spend more time thinking to produce accurate responses, require up to 1,000 times more computing capacity than traditional large language models (LLMs). As a result, he thinks data center spending will reach $1 trillion per year by 2028 as companies race to meet that demand. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More » Nvidia is gearing up for the strongest year in its history thanks to its latest GPU architectures, which offer more performance than anything else on the market right now. Nvidia stock is trading at around $142 as of this writing (June 10), but here's why I think it's on the way to $200 before year-end. Nvidia is racing to launch new chips to meet demand Nvidia's Hopper architecture was at the foundation of its H100 GPU, which was the top-selling AI data center chip in 2023 and for most of 2024. It was superseded late last year by the Blackwell architecture, with GPUs like the GB200 producing up to 40 times more performance than the H100 in specific configurations. This is ideal for inference workloads, which is the process by which AI models analyze data to produce responses for the end user. Inference demand is soaring because of the reasoning models I mentioned, which include OpenAI's GPT-o3 and o4, Anthropic's Claude 4, Meta Platforms ' Llama 4, DeepSeek's R2, and more. Previous LLMs were great at generating one-shot responses that created a fast and convenient user experience, but they sometimes produced inaccurate information. Reasoning models refine their responses in the background before delivering them to the user, which takes longer and consumes significantly more tokens (words, punctuation, and symbols) -- between 100 and 1,000 times more, according to Jensen Huang. Therefore, it's possible Blackwell's 40-fold performance leap over Hopper still isn't enough for some reasoning models, which could lead to a sluggish user experience. Nvidia recently launched Blackwell Ultra, which offers a slightly better 50-fold improvement over Hopper, but developers will have to wait until next year for the next major jump in performance. That's because Nvidia will start shipping a lineup of GPUs based on its new Rubin architecture in 2026, which could be 3.3 times faster than Blackwell Ultra -- or around 165 times faster than Hopper. This constant chase for performance is why Huang thinks annual data center spending is heading toward $1 trillion in 2028, and the company with the most powerful chips is likely to capture the most market share. Wall Street's consensus estimate (provided by Yahoo! Finance) suggests Nvidia could generate a record $200 billion in revenue during its fiscal year 2026 (which ends on Jan. 30, 2027). Based on the company's recent financial results, the data center segment will account for around 89% of that revenue, which is why AI and GPU sales are the main focus for investors right now. Nvidia stock has a pathway to $200 this year Nvidia generated $3.19 in earnings per share (EPS) over the last four quarters, which places its stock at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 46. That is comfortably below its 10-year average of 59.9, suggesting the stock might be undervalued right now. Plus, Wall Street expects Nvidia to deliver up to $4.27 in EPS during fiscal 2026, placing its stock at a forward P/E ratio of 33.4: NVDA PE Ratio data by YCharts That means Nvidia stock would have to climb by 38% over the next nine months just to maintain its current P/E ratio of 46, and it would have to soar by 79% to trade in line with its 10-year average P/E ratio of 59.9. That would place Nvidia stock somewhere between $196 and $254 in the early stages of 2026. However, the stock market is a forward-looking machine, so investors usually start pricing in future earnings ahead of time. That's why I predict Nvidia stock will surpass $200 before 2025 is over. If Jensen Huang provides a bullish update on next year's Rubin GPUs, Wall Street analysts might even raise their EPS estimates, which would be another upside catalyst for the stock. But no matter what happens in the remainder of this year, investors should stay focused on the long term, because if data center operators spend $1 trillion annually on AI infrastructure by 2028, as Huang expects, $200 might actually be a bargain for Nvidia stock when we look back on this moment in the future. Should you invest $1,000 in Nvidia right now? Before you buy stock in Nvidia, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Nvidia wasn't one of them.
