Scotts Miracle-Gro CEO raises eyebrows with tariff comments
TV viewers may recognize the variation of the Scotts Miracle-Gro () tagline that's in a series of commercials featuring the Scotts Lawn Guy, an aggressive Scottish character with an intense passion for lawns.

Perhaps the Lawn Guy could exhort shares of the consumer lawn, garden and pest control products company into turning greener.
The Marysville, Ohio, group's shares are down 20% since January and off nearly 22% from a year ago.
Scotts also brought the lifestyle expert Martha Stewart on board as chief gardening officer.
"Spring is probably one of my favorite times of the year," Stewart said during the company's April 30 earnings call. "Everything is coming alive, and I personally can't wait to get my gardens fully planted."
Stewart told analysts that she was working to bring gardeners, "including the new generation, products that they will love and make part of their everyday lives."
"And that is a very good thing," she said, and then handed the mic over to Chief Executive Jim Hagedorn.
"It's a crazy and confusing macro environment for any company today, but I can simplify things," he said. "We're good. Our outlook is unchanged and we're reaffirming our full year guidance of $570 million to $590 million" of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization.

As for the Trump administration's tariffs, which have been dominating the news and clobbering the markets, Hagedorn said "we're largely unaffected in fiscal '25."
"We see no impact in our margins or pricing for this year," he said. "Historically, our equity has been a safe harbor in tough times. Everything you'll hear today is centered around getting back to that."
Hagedorn told analysts that Scotts had plenty of pretariff inventory, and "we do not anticipate pricing actions in fiscal '25 due to tariffs, nor do we expect margin pressure.
"If things change in '26, and we do feel more tariff and/or margin pressure, we will mitigate the impact and if necessary, take pricing," he said.
Scotts posted mixed first-quarter results, beating earnings estimates but falling short of Wall Street's revenue forecasts
"We delivered double-digit increases in consumer takeaway, gained market share and built momentum," Hagedorn said. "We're happy with our consumer product sales to retailers."
He said unit volumes in the lawns business had declined and he challenged the team to develop a long-term solution. Early results have been promising..
"Consumers want a nice lawn all season long without a lot of work, but they don't always know how to make it happen," Hagedorn said.
"The solution is regular feedings, to create a thicker lawn that is less susceptible to weeds and disease and ultimately has less need for pesticides and fungicides."
However, the company got away from marketing regular feedings, and scrapped the one-bag approach for multibag use for specific problems such as weeds, bugs or disease.
"It was effective in selling one bag of fertilizer, but it was ineffective in giving the consumer the lawn they really want," Hagedorn said. "This year, we've returned to a multibag strategy."
Scotts also decided to pass the dutchie on the left hand side and get out of the cannabis business.
Scotts had created a subsidiary for the business, Hawthorne, which made acquisitions in companies that sold marijuana cultivation supplies, and invested in a Canadian business directly involved in growing and selling marijuana.But last month the company transferred its investment in the growing and distribution business to Bad Dog Holdings, an 'independent strategic partner.'
"We figured we'll be an early entrant, and that within three to five years — this is like 10 years ago — the feds would make the laws so that it wasn't federally a Schedule 1 narcotic," Hagedorn said in an interview with Barron's. 'We had a lot of faith the Democrats would do it."
"Equities in pot companies were at a peak when Biden got elected, and you had a Democratic Senate and a Democratic House."
Weed is still illegal on the federal level and 'you cannot deduct your business expenses," Hagedorn said.
"Your top-line revenue is your taxable income, so you're paying about an 80% tax rate," he explained. "Throw on state and local taxes, and you cannot make money.'
Hagedorn told analysts that "our next step is to sell Hawthorne Gardening to a dedicated cannabis company, by fiscal year end."
JP Morgan analyst Jeffrey Zekauskas lowered the investment firm's price target on Scotts to $65 from $80 and affirmed an overweight rating on the shares.

From Bitcoin to AI: Why Maelstrom's Akshat Vaidya Says Crypto's Next Wave Is Already Here originally appeared on TheStreet. If you're still waiting for altcoin season to kick into gear, Maelstrom co-founder Akshat Vaidya has some advice: It might not be like before. 'I think it's going to be very hard to replicate what we did before,' Vaidya told Coinage. 'There was a time where if one [Layer-1] pops, the others will all pop. … I think there's enough network effects now to where if you just launch Solana competitor 1-2-3-4-5-6, you can't expect that to work.' It's a sobering assessment from someone who's lived through every major boom and bust in crypto since buying his first bitcoin in 2013. And after weathering 'about four or five crashes,' he's still betting on crypto's future — just not in the places most retail investors are looking. 'There's a flight to quality happening,' he said. 'And there's a flight to familiarity, because there's some low-quality, shitty old tokens that have been around for a while that for some reason are pumping.' Included in that mix are memecoins. 'My bet personally is that memecoins will be like NFTs of the last cycle,' Vaidya said. 'I don't think it's coming back." Instead, Maelstrom has focused on the real businesses quietly building under the surface: Stablecoins, DeFi infrastructure, and AI agents. One of Maelstrom's first bets was on stablecoin protocol Ethena, well before the GENIUS Act supercharged institutional interest. 'Having seen what Ethena and its other competitors were able to achieve without the GENIUS Act… now imagine a world afterwards. It's pretty exciting.' The demand, he said, is tangible. The rise of stablecoins has opened up a new way to access the U.S. dollar —especially in emerging markets. 'It didn't make sense to serve 80% of the population in most developing countries, and now it does," he said. That dynamic has also kicked off an unexpected bull case: U.S. debt distribution is changing. 'You're going to have a lot of diversification in holders of U.S. debt that we've really never seen as a nation before.' Tether's CEO Paolo Ardoino would certainly agree. He recently told Coinage that stablecoins replacing certain sovereign nations as major holders of U.S. debt will be the lynchpin in Trump's tariff gambit. It's that kind of structural shift that Maelstrom is looking to capitalize on. And as crypto matures, it's also opening more traditional M&A activity in the industry as well. 'Usually [in crypto M&A] they overpay… You're just combining two businesses. But what we haven't seen much of yet — and what we're trying to do — is financial sponsors who just want to buy a company, run it better for a few years, and sell it," he said. That patient capital, paired with deep crypto experience, gives Maelstrom a unique vantage point on where the industry is headed. Right now, Vaidya said, one of the most under-appreciated opportunities is in agent-based AI. 'Not memecoins that tweet,' he said, taking a shot at the hot meta from last year. 'Actual agent AI projects.' While the hype cycle earlier last year came and went, Vaidya believes the infrastructure is quietly catching up. 'There's a lot of data we're producing on user behavior… and it takes a while to train bots on that. That's been happening in the background.' The wedge, he believes, will be trading. 'Probably advanced bots at first… and then those will evolve into full-blown execution venues.' The key advantage, again, will be plugging into existing systems. 'Those that tie up with the Binances of the world… will be able to actually come in and alter the value chain of how trading is done today.' Still, Vaidya's own strategy remains surprisingly simple. 'I've been doing like drip style investing — automated weekly buys on Coinbase since 2013… never turned off, never changed,' he said. 'Bitcoin… that's not going to change for me.' Even as he scouts edge cases like AI agents and private equity crypto turnarounds, the long-term thesis remains familiar. And in those moments where it feels like mainstream interest surely can't exceed last cycle's highs, Vaidya says to just wait. 'Retail always comes back,' he said. 'And the world of buyers keeps getting bigger.' July Inflation Report: Why CPI Could Be Bad News No Matter What

A key inflation report is looming, but it's possible that the July data paints a dismal picture of the economy whether it shows prices rose or fell. The July consumer price index report is expected to show that prices rose 0.2% last month and 2.8% year-over-year. The consensus expectations reflect a slightly hotter pace of inflation from the prior month, with consumer prices rising 2.7% year-over-year in June. Rising inflation is bad, but there's a chance that falling inflation is taken as a dire warning, as well, sources told Business Insider. Here's the logic: If inflation comes in too hot, that will undermine the possibility that the Fed could cut interest rates in September. The Fed resuming rate cuts is a major bullish catalyst that the market has been looking forward to for months. Hotter-than-expected inflation could also be construed as a sign that President Donald Trump's tariffs are finally starting to raise prices for consumers, which will stoke concerns about the health of the US economy. If inflation comes in too cold, that would compound some of the evidence that suggests the US economy is slowing, something that markets have been fretting over since the July nonfarm payrolls report showed weak job growth in the month, as well as sharp downward revisions for the prior two months. In either case, stocks could see a negative reaction following tomorrow's CPI print, Michael Brown, a senior research strategist at Pepperstone, told Business Insider. If inflation comes in colder-than-expected, any following sell-off could be short-lasting, he said, as investors will quickly pivot their attention to Fed rate cuts on the horizon. "If we get a hot number, all of a sudden there's a lot of doubts around that September meeting, and we're suddenly looking at probably some headwinds to equities as we price in a slowdown in the economy," he told BI. Investors began to price in a September Fed rate cut with more certainty after the job market proved to be much weaker than expected in July. Markets see an 86.5% chance the Fed could cut rates a quarter-point in September, according to the CME FedWatch tool, down slightly from 90.4% last week. Justin Weidner, an economist at Deutsche Bank, also sees a potential negative reaction in the market no matter what CPI does tomorrow. If inflation comes in higher than expected, that makes the calculus for a Fed rate cut in September "more tricky," he told BI. But if prices are cooler than expected, it be enough cause for concern about the economy to prompt the Fed to issue a jumbo-sized 50 basis-point rate cut in September. "On the flip side, if it's kind of weaker, weaker than expected, you have some pullback," Weidner added of the potential reaction in stocks. Natalie Gallagher, principal economist at Board, also saw the risks to tomorrow's CPI report cutting both ways. Gallagher said she expected inflation to be 2.9%, hotter than consensus estimates. That will likely "mark the beginning of a longer trend," she said in a note, pointing to concerns that inflation could begin to lift off as tariffs work their way through the economy. "The real surprise would be if these pressures don't show - that would suggest demand is softening to a point that businesses can't raise prices, which is a troubling signal for US growth," she said. Investors will be paying close attention to Powell's comments at the Fed's Jackson Hole symposium this year, according to Brown. Thomson Reuters The outlook for Fed rate cuts will largely depend on the trajectory of inflation in the coming months, Brown said. Markets will also be paying close attention to Fed Chair Powell's comments, particularly at Jackson Hole, where the central bank hosts its annual summer symposium. There's a chance investors could be getting too complacent about expecting Fed rate cuts, Brown said, pointing to high odds markets see for a September cut. "I'm sort of 50-50 as to whether they pull the trigger in September," Brown said. "You'd say maybe they should, but then this is a Fed that has been bitten already relatively recently by inflation that ran away from them, frankly unexpectedly, and I think that memory is still going to be quite fresh in the mind."
