Here's How Week 1 of The Briefing with Jen Psaki Performed for MSNBC
But thanks to a recent programming revamp overseen by new MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler, Psaki is now anchoring The Briefing with Jen Psaki. The Tuesday-Friday newscast that takes over the 9 p.m. ET time slot previously occupied by Alex Wagner Tonight. (Wagner remains with MSNBC as a senior political analyst.)
The Briefing made its debut on May 6 following Rachel Maddow's return to her Monday-only schedule. The Rachel Maddow Show had been airing Monday thru Friday during the first 100 days of President Donald Trump's second term.
Maddow's last full week saw her averaging 2.066 million total viewers and 173,000 viewers in the advertiser-coveted Adults 25-54 demo. Her newscast was the seventh most-watched cable news show in total viewers and landed in 14th place in the demo during the week of April 21.
Additionally, Maddow's Monday-only show during the week of May 5 averaged 1.722 million total viewers and 155,000 demo viewers. That episode finished as the 13th most-watched cable news show in total viewers and 15th place in the demo.
With a week's worth of ratings under her belt, Psaki averaged 1.096 million total viewers and 92,000 demo viewers during her inaugural week as host of The Briefing.
Compared to Maddow's final week, The Briefing was down by -47% in both total viewers and the demo. Relative to Maddow's Monday-only appearance, Psaki was down -36% in total viewers and -41% in the demo.
On average, The Briefing was MSNBC's third-most watched show in total viewers behind Deadline: White House with Nicole Wallace and The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell. It was the network's fourth most-watched program in the demo.
Last week also saw the quiet debuts of The Weekend and The Weeknight on MSNBC. The network noted that a competitive sports playoff cycle has been luring viewers away from cable news in recent weeks. Additionally, the passing of Pope Francis led to a rise in ratings during the week of April 21.
MSNBC knew Psaki would have large shoes to fill by taking over from Maddow four nights a week. The network is likely to be patient with The Briefing as it positions its host as a visible and prominent figure in their primetime lineup.

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough says Trump ‘has the cards' in talks with Putin
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough broke from other lefty pundits as he argued that it's President Trump – not Russian President Vladimir Putin – who holds 'the cards' in negotiations over ending Moscow's war with Ukraine. 'You know, there are a lot of people talking about who has cards, who's not playing cards …it's Donald Trump,' Scarborough said during Wednesday's show. Scarborough's assessment clashed with many of his colleagues who have blasted Trump's handling of the Alaska summit with Putin as an 'embarrassment.' Advertisement MSNBC host Joe Scarborough said President Trump holds the power in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. 'Donald Trump has the cards. He has the cards with, first of all, with sanctions. He can just say, 'Hey, Lindsey [Graham], go ahead. Let's pass the sanctions bill and let's grind him down,'' Scarborough insisted. 'And the second thing is they were talking about a possible $90 billion military aid bill to Ukraine. Those are two things that would change the dynamics very quickly.' Advertisement Scarborough said that Putin's bravado was simply a ruse to appear in-control of the situation. 'Vladimir Putin can huff and puff and say he's gonna blow the house down all he wants,' Scarborough said. President Trump meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. AP 'The Fake News has been saying for 3 days that I suffered a 'major defeat' by allowing President Vladimir Putin of Russia to have a major Summit in the United States. Actually, he would have loved doing the meeting anywhere else but the US, and the Fake News knows this,' Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Sunday. 'It was a major point of contention! If we had the Summit elsewhere, the Democrat run and controlled media would have said what a terrible thing THAT was. These people are sick!' Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who claimed 'Putin got everything he wanted.' Trump slammed both men as 'stupid people,' arguing that it was 'very hard' for Putin to come to the US.

Ari Melber shares new Epstein timeline he says raises 'fresh questions' for Trump admin
The controversy over Donald Trump and his administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case continues. On Tuesday's 'The Beat,' Ari Melber delivered a 'special report' laying out a timeline of Epstein's case and tracing what he called a 'sordid path' of crimes, investigations, corruption and deals with government insiders. Melber said the recap raised 'fresh questions for Trump and other government officials.' Melber began with the controversial 2008 'sweetheart deal' that federal prosecutors in Florida gave Esptein. That deal granted the millionaire immunity from prosecution on sex-trafficking charges. The MSNBC host said the 'evasion of accountability' later created a problem for Trump during his first stint in the White House, after he promoted the prosecutor responsible for reaching that agreement with Epstein. Eventually, Trump's Justice Department would bring new charges against Epstein in 2019. But, just a month later, the millionaire was found dead in his jail cell from an apparent suicide under circumstances that sparked immediate conspiracy theories. 'Everyone knew Epstein was a notorious, high-profile defendant, and yet he died,' Melber said. The Epstein saga has continued to plague Trump into his second term. The president was heavily criticized by many members of the MAGA base after a Justice Department and FBI memo released by his administration found that there was no evidence Epstein had kept a 'client list' or that he was murdered. The administration also drew ire when Trump's former personal lawyer turned deputy attorney general, Todd Blanche, flew to Florida to question Epstein co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell. The president has repeatedly said he has the power to pardon Maxwell, who was moved to a lower security facility in Texas shortly after her conversation with Blanche. 'Even if we learn nothing else about this, it's an open scandal for this administration,' Melber observed. Politics aside, Melber reminded viewers that at its core, 'this is a case that matters so much to the many people, many victims, whose lives were forever altered by Epstein and Maxwell.' 'The big thing the Trump administration has done is continue the secrecy, continue to cut the victims out, and, most astoundingly, help and serve an Epstein sex trafficking co-conspirator over truth or justice for the victims,' he said. Chris Matthews tells Dems to abandon 'all this other crap' on open borders and trans issues, focus on economy
Former MSNBC host Chris Matthews criticized the Democratic Party on Wednesday and said it needed to focus on the economy rather than issues like attacking the Trump administration's immigration policies and defending transgender athletes competing in women's sports. While discussing the Democratic Party's low popularity on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Matthews pointed in part to the Biden administration's poor handling of illegal immigration as a reason, saying, "The polling will tell you, the open border – what seemed like an open border for four years." "Today, the border has been closed since January and not a peep out of any Hispanic leader. Nobody has complained because they know that surge at the border was killing the Democrats," he added. Identifying another possible factor in Democrats' sinking approval, Matthews cited how transgender policies impacted the 2024 presidential election: "On the issue of trans people playing women's sports, that ad ran in every sports event, starting with the World Series. It never stopped. It showed up around the third quarter and everybody's like, what's that? That's insane." The ad in question from President Donald Trump's campaign featured a narrator telling voters: "Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you." Matthews said issues such as trans people participating in sports were 80/20 issues and added that the party couldn't make it a lead issue, before arguing that Democrats' focus should be on the economy. "They've got to pick three hard economic issues: interest rates, inflation, tariffs. And they got to say that's what we're running on. Not all this other crap," the former MSNBC host said. "I'm going to go after real things and affordability and that's how we're going to win the close election, and it's going to be close, in '26," he said. Co-host Joe Scarborough agreed and suggested the Democratic Party diffuse the issues. He urged acknowledging that the southern border was a problem during the Biden administration while, at the same time, being humane in dealing with immigration. "Then you go to the trans issue. The Democrats just didn't want to talk about, despite the fact that 85% of Americans did not want men who transitioned after puberty competing against young women, young girls, right? 'So, of course, we understand why 85% of people are against that. And no, we don't think that's fair. We're for fairness, but we're also for compassion. Let's figure out what we can do here that's fair to young women, fair to young girls,'" the MSNBC host said. Scarborough also emphasized focusing on affordability. Matthews also called out the Democratic Party earlier this month over its response to Trump's plan to combat crime in Washington, D.C. "I think this is a strength move against the big cities who are in a difficult situation on crime. And the murder rate, you can't keep saying violent crime is down with the murder rates up. To the average person, the murders are about life and death. You don't brag about a rising murder rate. And the Democrats are, I agree with you, Mika, they're falling into the trap of defending what's indefensible," he said during an August 13 appearance on "Morning Joe."
