Former armed forces chief Aziz appointed NS Training Council chairman
KUALA LUMPUR: Former armed forces chief General (Rtd) Tan Sri Dr Abdul Aziz Zainal has been appointed chairman of the National Service Training Council, which will oversee the implementation of the revamped National Service Training Programme (NS 3.0).
The appointment, effective from April 14, 2025 to April 13, 2028, was endorsed by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and announced by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
Khaled said under the National Service Training Act 2003, the council functions as the minister's key advisory body and must include a chairman, five government representatives, and three to five representatives from Malaysia's major ethnic groups.
The council also comprises four members from key communities and regions.
"The government representatives are Defence Ministry secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali; Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hashim; Higher Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Anesee Ibrahim; Youth and Sports Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Nagulendran Kanayatkarasu; and Women, Family and Community Development Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Maziah Che Yusoff.
"Also representing Malaysia's main communities in the council are Malaysian Youth Council president Mohd Izzat Afifi Abdul Hamid, deputy president Soon Honn Keong, and Professor Datuk Dr Sivamurugan Pandian.
"Also in the council is Sabah Chief Minister's Department Internal Affairs and Research secretary Datuk Abang Shahminan Abang Sahari," he said in his speech.
Khaled also said the reintroduction of the National Service programme marked the government's unwavering commitment to shaping a patriotic, disciplined and united younger generation, and that the council's formation was key to that mission.
"We believe that while not everyone may be 100 per cent patriotic or willing to sacrifice for the nation, we must earnestly pursue a process or intervention that ensures there is a strong core within our society — individuals with deep patriotic spirit and love for the nation.
"To me, this is of great importance and must not be taken lightly. For the ministry and the government at large, we aspire to foster a society where there will always be a generation that is aware of its role, responsibility, and value to the nation," he said.
Also present at the ceremony were current Armed Forces chief General Datuk Mohd Nizam Jaffar and Royal Malaysian Air Force chief General Tan Sri Asghar Khan Goriman Khan.
On Feb 25, a total of 116 trainees nationwide completed the NS 3.0 Series 1/2025 after undergoing 45 days of training that began on Jan 12.
The next intake, Series 2/2025, is scheduled to run from May 11 to June 24, followed by Series 3/2025 from Sept 7 to Oct 21.
It will be held at either the 515th Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Kuala Lumpur or the 505th Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Pekan, Pahang.

China ousts top general from elite military body as purge grows
Chinese President Xi Jinping has unseated more than a dozen senior military EPA-EFE via The Straits Times/ANN BEIJING (Bloomberg/Reuters): China has removed a top general from the nation's apex military body led by President Xi Jinping, as the defence establishment is facing a wave of purges. Admiral Miao Hua, 69, who oversees political loyalty in the armed forces, has been ousted from the national Central Military Commission (CMC), according to a statement from the National People's Congress Standing Committee. The six-man commission is the armed force's premier decision-making body and one of the most powerful institutions in China. Under Xi, there are two vice-chairmen serving as military leaders and three other members that included Adm Miao, who is seen as a close ally of the country's top leader. Adm Miao's photo was removed from the senior leadership page of the Defence Ministry's website. 'The Political Work Department of the Central Military Commission held a military representative conference on March 14 this year and decided to remove Miao Hua from his position as a representative of the 14th National People's Congress,' a statement from state news agency Xinhua said. The statement did not contain any other details, but the move marks another stage in Xi's ongoing anti-corruption purge of China's military. Xi's government has unseated more than a dozen senior military figures since launching a corruption investigation last summer into hardware purchases going back to 2017. That probe resulted in the removal of China's last two defence ministers from the Communist Party, as well as the ouster of several officials with ties to the secretive Rocket Force that oversees the nation's nuclear arsenal. Adm Miao was suspended from the CMC in 2024 as he was under investigation for 'serious violations of discipline'. For the ruling Communist Party, that language typically refers to a graft probe. In April, Adm Miao was expelled from Parliament without explanation. Adm Miao was stationed in the coastal province of Fujian when Xi worked there as a local official, according to his official biography. Xi personally elevated Adm Miao to the CMC. Another CMC member and China's second-ranking general, General He Weidong, has not been seen in public since the March 11 closing ceremony of the annual parliamentary sessions in Beijing. Since then, he has not appeared at a series of high-level Politburo and military public engagements. He is the third-most powerful commander of the People's Liberation Army and is considered a close associate of Xi. The Defence Ministry said in March it was 'unaware' of reports he had been detained. His photo remains on the ministry's website. In 2024, the Defence Ministry denied reports that Defence Minister Dong Jun was being probed on suspicion of corruption. Dong has continued to appear at public events, attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation defence ministers' meeting in Qingdao this week. BLOOMBERG, REUTERS

Tengku Zafrul discusses economic cooperation with Singapore, Indonesia leaders
KUALA LUMPUR: Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, held discussions with leaders from Singapore and his counterpart from Indonesia to enhance and strengthen economic cooperation for the mutual benefit of the three neighbouring countries. "I had the opportunity to engage with counterparts from our neighbouring nations -- Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto. "Our main focus was to improve and deepen trilateral economic cooperation for our shared benefit," he said in a post on his X platform, adding that he is currently in Indonesia. Tengku Zafrul is one of four ministers accompanying Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on his official visit to Indonesia today. Other ministers in the delegation include Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Higher Education Minister Senator Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Communications Minister Datuk Ahmad Fahmi Mohamed Fadzil, and Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. Commenting further, Tengku Zafrul said the discussions, held against a backdrop of ongoing geopolitical challenges, also touched on ASEAN's role in navigating the increasingly complex geoeconomic landscape. In 2024, Indonesia was Malaysia's sixth-largest global trading partner and the second-largest among ASEAN member states. During the same period, bilateral trade rose 4.5 per cent to RM116.29 billion (US$25.5 billion), from RM111.21 billion (US$24.39 billion) in 2023. In a statement on Thursday, the Foreign Ministry said Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, is making the visit in return for Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's visit to Malaysia earlier this year. The visit includes bilateral meetings and attendance at the 46th ASEAN Summit, the Second ASEAN-GCC Summit, and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit held from May 26 to 27. "This visit also forms part of preparations for the 13th Annual Consultation between Malaysia and Indonesia, scheduled to take place later this year," the statement added.
