Tengku Zafrul discusses economic cooperation with Singapore, Indonesia leaders

KUALA LUMPUR: Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, held discussions with leaders from Singapore and his counterpart from Indonesia to enhance and strengthen economic cooperation for the mutual benefit of the three neighbouring countries.
"I had the opportunity to engage with counterparts from our neighbouring nations -- Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto.
"Our main focus was to improve and deepen trilateral economic cooperation for our shared benefit," he said in a post on his X platform, adding that he is currently in Indonesia.
Tengku Zafrul is one of four ministers accompanying Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on his official visit to Indonesia today.
Other ministers in the delegation include Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Higher Education Minister Senator Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Communications Minister Datuk Ahmad Fahmi Mohamed Fadzil, and Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
Commenting further, Tengku Zafrul said the discussions, held against a backdrop of ongoing geopolitical challenges, also touched on ASEAN's role in navigating the increasingly complex geoeconomic landscape.
In 2024, Indonesia was Malaysia's sixth-largest global trading partner and the second-largest among ASEAN member states.
During the same period, bilateral trade rose 4.5 per cent to RM116.29 billion (US$25.5 billion), from RM111.21 billion (US$24.39 billion) in 2023.
In a statement on Thursday, the Foreign Ministry said Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, is making the visit in return for Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's visit to Malaysia earlier this year.
The visit includes bilateral meetings and attendance at the 46th ASEAN Summit, the Second ASEAN-GCC Summit, and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit held from May 26 to 27.
"This visit also forms part of preparations for the 13th Annual Consultation between Malaysia and Indonesia, scheduled to take place later this year," the statement added.

The company's electric vehicle division said on its official Weibo account that there had been 289,000 pre-orders for the five-seater YU7, priced from 253,500 yuan (RM149,454), within the first hour of sales. — AFP BEIJING: Chinese electric vehicle maker Xiaomi received almost 300,000 pre-orders within an hour for its first sport utility vehicles in what the company said was a "miraculous" moment for the industry. Lei Jun, founder and CEO of the electronics-turned-car company, said he was astonished by the reaction from customers. "My goodness, in just two minutes, we received 196,000 paid pre-orders and 128,000 lock-in orders," Lei said in a video distributed after the vehicle's launch on Thursday night. "We may be witnessing a miracle in China's automotive industry." The company's electric vehicle division said later on its official Weibo account that there had been 289,000 pre-orders for the five-seater YU7, priced from 253,500 yuan (RM 149,454 or about US$35,000), within the first hour of sales. Xiaomi's Hong Kong-listed shares soared 8% at one point before paring their gains but ending at a record high. The Beijing-based commercial tech giant made its first foray into car-making with its SU7 EV model last year, part of a broader industry push to boost domestic consumption. Initial enthusiasm for intelligent driving features in such vehicles was tempered by the fatal crash of a Xiaomi SU7 in March. The vehicle had been in assisted driving mode just before it crashed, killing three students. Premier Li Qiang used the World Economic Forum in Tianjin this week to outline China's ambition to become a "major consumption powerhouse", emphasising policies to stimulate demand for high-value goods such as electric vehicles. – AFP

Malaysia, Indonesia push for swift resolution of Sabah-Ambalat maritime issues

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to intensify efforts to resolve long-standing border and maritime issues, including those involving Sabah and the resource-rich Ambalat Block, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. During his discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in conjunction with his visit to Jakarta, Anwar said both leaders also acknowledged Sabah's strategic role in shaping ongoing negotiations, particularly those concerning maritime boundaries and potential joint development initiatives in contested areas such as Ambalat. He said both nations are committed to strengthening bilateral ties by addressing sensitive issues through mutual respect, established legal frameworks, and diplomatic engagement. "Both sides are making serious efforts to settle these issues in the spirit of close friendship and trust that has existed for nearly half a century. "We also discussed the inclusion of Malaysian territories, particularly Sabah, in these bilateral engagements. "I would like to express my appreciation for Indonesia's continued loyalty and trust in strengthening this relationship, including taking into account Sabah's views in maritime border discussions so that any agreements reached are fairer and concluded more promptly," he said. Anwar made these remarks during a joint press conference with Prabowo, held as part of his working visit to Indonesia. Anwar added that the maritime and border discussions included the potential for joint development initiatives, such as in the Ambalat area, to benefit communities on both sides, particularly those living near the border. "While the issue of Ambalat may take time if pursued through traditional means, we have agreed that joint development could be a more productive and timely approach, providing immediate benefits for both nations and improving livelihoods along the frontier," he said. He also said both governments have instructed their respective ministers and officials to accelerate negotiations and cooperation, particularly in resolving outstanding territorial claims and enhancing economic collaboration. Meanwhile, Prabowo said both countries had agreed to commence economic cooperation in the disputed maritime areas, even as legal discussions continue. "We have agreed on border matters, which may still take time to resolve technically, but in principle, both sides are committed to a solution. "Take the Ambalat issue... While we work through the legal complexities, we also want to begin economic cooperation, which we refer to as joint development. "Whatever resources we discover in the sea, we will explore together. We have agreed that we must act in the interest of our nations and our people," he said. Both leaders also exchanged views on international issues, including developments in Iran, Gaza, Myanmar, and ongoing tensions in Southeast Asia. Anwar said Malaysia appreciates Indonesia's determination to pursue a peaceful resolution, noting its historical experience in managing internal conflicts and tensions among various groups. "Indonesia is well-positioned to utilise its military and intelligence capabilities not for aggression, but to negotiate and foster understanding among all factions in Myanmar. "We also discussed the rising tensions along the Thailand–Cambodia border. "Both Malaysia and Indonesia believe it is essential to engage constructively with both nations to help defuse the situation." The leaders reaffirmed Asean's central role and voiced strong support for peaceful solutions through dialogue and diplomacy.

Malaysia, Indonesia push to realise untapped trade potential

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto have called for renewed focus on unlocking the vast, yet underutilised, potential in bilateral trade and investment between Malaysia and Indonesia. Speaking at a joint press conference during his working visit to Jakarta, Anwar said that despite close diplomatic ties and decades of cooperation, both countries have not fully capitalised on the many opportunities available across key sectors. "My friendship with Prabowo reflects the deep bonds between our nations. For nearly half a century, we have nurtured a close personal and familial relationship built on trust, mutual respect, and a sincere spirit of brotherhood. "The potential for greater economic cooperation is immense, particularly in trade and investment. However, we both agree that much of this capacity remains untapped. "There is ample room for us to optimise this potential in the shared interest of our people and our longstanding friendship," he said. Anwar said both governments are aligned in their political will to advance cooperation in areas such as the economy, education, research, culture, and investment. "We recognise our shared responsibility to uplift the standing of our nations, whether through trade, education, innovation, or cultural exchange. As President Prabowo mentioned earlier, these are all vital areas that have been discussed. "I fully support the President's call for pragmatic steps to enhance our country's performance, especially in the face of tariff-related challenges and global uncertainties. "We must strengthen our domestic foundations, while expanding bilateral and Asean-level cooperation," he said. Prabowo echoed the sentiment, affirming Indonesia's commitment to working closely with Malaysia. "On the bilateral front, we have agreed to accelerate cooperation across all sectors, especially key areas such as the economy, trade, education, and culture. "These are issues that both of us agree must be addressed promptly, in the interest of something far greater — the enduring friendship and close cooperation between two countries that share so much in common. "We have a shared history, similar cultures, and many of our people even practise the same faiths. These deep-rooted ties are a strong foundation for us to work from," he said. Anwar was on an official visit to Indonesia today, as part of the ongoing commitment by both nations to further deepen their close and longstanding bilateral relations at the highest leadership level. The visit also formed part of the preparations for the 13th Annual Malaysia–Indonesia Consultation, scheduled to take place later this year. During the visit, Anwar also had a private meeting with Prabowo to review key bilateral issues, follow up on the outcomes of the 46th Asean Summit, the 2nd Asean–GCC Summit, and the ASEAN–China–GCC Summit, as well as to exchange views on regional developments and global issues of mutual concern. He was accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan; Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz; Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir; Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil; and Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. In 2024, Indonesia was Malaysia's sixth-largest trading partner globally, and the second-largest among Asean member states. Bilateral trade increased by 4.5 per cent to RM116.29 billion (US$25.5 billion), up from RM111.21 billion in 2023.
