Matthäus: Sané should be at World Cup if he delivers for Galatasaray

Former Germany and Bayern Munich captain Lothar Matthäus has welcomed Leroy Sané's move to Galatasaray and believes he has a good chance of retaining his place in the national team and playing at the 2026 World Cup if he delivers for the Istanbul club.
"It is up to Leroy: If he performs for Gala in the league and in the Champions League as well he has a very good chance to play at the World Cup," Matthäus told Saturday's Bild paper.

Germany winger Sané, 29, joined Turkish domestic double winners Galatasaray in mid-week on a three-year contract on a free transfer after five seasons at Bayern Munich.
Matthäus, who led Germany to the 1990 World Cup title, spoke of a "super" transfer for Sané and a big statement by Galatasaray.
"Galatasaray have ambitions, a big budget, Turkish football has become stronger, the time of scandals is over," he said.
He praised "super stadiums" in Turkey, and good coaches "who have brought calm to the clubs."
Matthäus said that Sané never had this kind of standing in Munich which resulted in renewal talks collapsing because the club wanted him to accept a pay cut.

"The club didn't really want to keep him. While other players got considerably more money in their renewals, Bayern went on the salary brakes with him," Matthäus said.
"Bayern never really fought for Sané."

Italy Turns to Gennaro Gattuso to get World Cup Hopes Back on Track

Former hard-tackling midfielder Gennaro Gattuso was named Italy coach on Sunday, tasked with reviving the country's already-flagging World Cup qualifying hopes. Gattuso replaces Luciano Spalletti, who was fired last week after Italy lost its opening qualifier 3-0 at Norway to spark fears that the four-time champion will fail to qualify for a third straight World Cup. Gattuso lifted one of those World Cups as a player, in 2006. "Gattuso is a symbol of Italian soccer, the blue shirt is like a second skin for him," Italian soccer federation president Gabriele Gravina said. "His motivation, his professionalism and his experience will be fundamental to best face the national team's next matches. "Aware of the importance of the objective we want to achieve, I thank him for the willingness and total dedication with which he accepted this challenge." Claudio Ranieri was the Italian soccer federation's top choice to replace Spalletti but he turned down the offer. Gattuso's last coaching job was at Hajduk Split but he left the Croatian club by mutual consent at the start of the month after just one season in charge. The 47-year-old had previously coached AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia and Marseille, among others. Check out the kickoff of the one year to go ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup! As a player, Gattuso also won two league titles and two Champions League trophies with Milan, where he made 468 appearances and scored 11 goals. His only goal in 73 appearances for Italy was a fierce 25-meter strike against England in a 1-0 win in November 2000. Gattuso's only trophy as a coach was the Italian Cup with Napoli in 2010. Italy is already nine points behind Norway in its World Cup qualifying group, albeit having played two matches fewer than the group leader. The Azzurri followed up its dismal opening loss with a 2-0 win over minnow Moldova last Monday in what was Spalletti's final match in charge. He had revealed that he was being fired the previous day. Gattuso's first match as Italy coach will be at home to Estonia on Sept. 5. Israel is also in five-team Group I. Italy hosts Norway in the final round on Nov. 16. Only the group winner advances directly to the 2026 tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The runner-up enters playoff brackets to be played next March. That was the stage where Italy was eliminated by Sweden and North Macedonia and ruled out of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, respectively. Gattuso will be presented at a news conference in Rome on Thursday. Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Rayan Cherki: I can win the Ballon d'Or at Manchester City

Rayan Cherki says he chose to sign for Manchester City as he believes he can fulfil his dream of winning the Ballon d'Or at the club. The 21-year-old joined from Lyon this week for a fee of €36.5million (£30.9m, $41.7m) and has been training with his new team-mates ahead of the Club World Cup. As a 15-year-old the French midfielder stated his ambition to win the Champions League and be named the best player in the world. Advertisement 'When you see Rodri win the Ballon d'Or it is clear (that) with Manchester City it is possible,' he said at the club's training base in Miami, Florida. 'I'm here for this.' Cherki's cameo appearance for France in the Nations League final defeat to Spain almost inspired his country to a late comeback. His trickery and dribbling ability is key to his game but Pep Guardiola has been accused in the past of dulling creative players. Cherki does not hold any fears that this will happen to him. 'Pep said to me when you have the ball you are free,' he said. 'It is very good for me as it is my first quality. He said to me, 'I love number 10 but now you play in all the positions of the pitch.' It is not complicated because I just want to play. 'I spoke with Pep and he wanted me. It was very, very clear because the system, the club, the city is very good and I want to win at Manchester City. And he wants to win it all.' Cherki arrives at City just as Kevin de Bruyne leaves for Napoli on a free transfer. Across his ten seasons at City, the Belgian recorded 119 assists — the second most in Premier League history — and Cherki will be expected to replace some of that creativity. 'I'm not Kevin de Bruyne, he is a legend,' Cherki said. 'I am here to help the team and to write my own history. In the team we have the best player in the world and for playing I will help the team. For this I work and wait my return. When I play I will help my team and want to win. 'I'm ready for this because I want to win all of the competitions and I want to play all (of them). We have a lot of games but that is football and it is very good to play the first FIFA club world cup in the history and I want (to make) impressions.' ()
